Even the best calculators in the 80s, the HP 41s, had a clockspeed measured in kHz, not GHz, along with a few KB of ram instead of GB. My TI-55 calculator (of which I was terribly proud of while it worked) was far wimpier with only 32 program steps. Take the cheapest modern chinese smartphone into the 80s and it would be the fastest supercomputer on the planet.

Building a phone that's draining its battery while charging is a new low I didn't imagine possible in the times of USB-C connectors capable of delivering dozens of watts. Up until now I considered this a thing of the past when micro-USB plugs were still common - by the official standard they were limited to 5 volts and 500 milliamperes, delivering a whopping 2.5 watts. Seriously, how do you manage to build a phone that essentially can't charge while powered on when USB-C can power entire x86 notebooks?

He's probably using an old charger and old cable from an older phone. There's laptops that operate at 10-15w while idle or on youtube videos, so the phone can't really be loaded that much. Perhaps it's the "patriotic" apps loaded in the background that are draining the battery. Probably needs a reboot, but that's sort of normal when you have bloatware on phones that crash, but can't be closed. Samsung's are notorious for it eg Knox or their latest camera app that crashes, sic. It happens with Apple too, it's just usually less obvious. Though you're right, USB-C doesn't really have these issues, it's probably that he's using something like wireless charging or an older 20w plug in the car, sic. This is sort of normal when you have the screen on while in use or using it in the car, sic.

People forget that the phones we use now with the 6-7 inch screens weren't common in the beginning. They called them phablets since they were phones getting close to tablets. Once you start to get to bigger screens, then your phone becomes a small tablet that can call. Though tablets can use applications to calls. So doesn't make sense carry it when the only advantage is a slightly bigger screen.

I hope they've improved since I got my Z Fold. Mine is still not paid off and the center screen has all but quit working entirely. I liked it in the beginning, too. I got a couple years out of it before it became such an issue that I had to go to Wal-mart and get a $40 burner to swap the SIM into. I didn't complain when the screen protector started lifting out of the seam and collecting dust, just changed it out, but I can't do anything for it when the whole display is tinged brown and has green lines running through it. I sent it back for repairs and they charged me $50 and made me spend a week with no phone just so they could take it out of one box and put it in another with a note saying they did nothing to fix it.

reviewers typically get paid to say good things about the product they're reviewing. I'll admit that a folding phone/tablet is an intriguing idea, and it might be a nice product in 4 or 5 years when the tech has matured. early adopters almost always get shafted though

Because those reviewers will only open it once to review, then put it back in the closet. Of course if you only use it once, it’ll look good but If you use it long enough issues would pop up Also these reviewers likely got theirs for free or they want the good graces of the suppliers 😂

we learned this lesson a decade ago: more moving parts, more vectors of failure. exponential effect on usability. mechanical buttons for dialing often saw this problem. lose any munber, phone becomes almost unusable.

Im wondering if a jelly layer would prevent the crease in the screen and also allow for the folding action to be "lubricated" for the screen. So it applies less strain to the panel?
