Huawei P20 Pro vs Galaxy S9+: In-Depth Camera Test Comparison

In this video I compare 2 of the best smartphone cameras of 2018: The Samsung Galaxy S9+ vs the Huawei P20 Pro. I compare the two cameras in low light, challenging light, and great light. I take a look at the portrait mode of the P20 Pro, and the Live Focus mode of the S9 Plus. I also look at the 4K video, and the fact that the P20 Pro has no image stabilization in 4K. I also take a look at the front facing video and microphone qualities of each phone. Then in lowlight, I take a look at the P20 Pro's 6 second shutter night mode, and the S9+'s dual aperture. Snapdragon 845 can not effectively process a 40mp camera. It's only rated up to 35 I believe.

10MPX on the P20 are taken with the 40MPX camera but down sampled to 10, to take better details, colors and much wider dynamic range, 40mpx should only be taken if you are shooting RAW and editing photos on Adobe.

Great video comparison as always .I had the P20 Pro for 2 days and image quality is excellent I love the night mode but the random over sharpening made images look awful unfortunate this is something that I cannot live with so I went with the S9 Plus.

Thank you! XDA Forums are full of that but here on YT no one seemed to mention that fact. I know it's just software and Google camera apk would fix that but then you're losing all the extra hardware capabilities of P20 Pro. It was oversharpening and closing the bootloader unlocking service which put P20 Pro on my no-go list.

Yeah I've seen so many KZbin reviews but know one seems to mention how bad it is as you said. it's just simple software fix that Huawei isn't fixing. I ended up returning it after 2 days .

I had a few other issues. Like weird blotchy green banding or pixelated artifacts in sections in photos indoors. Not wrecking the photo but I know it's there. Also really faint weird lines at times. After seeing this and knowing that could pop up again in photos I thought nah forget this.. I got rid of it. Lol.

This is something I had with the P20. The lens was great but even RAW images would appear overly processed and it wasn't something I found fun to shoot with and found myself carrying my DSLR everywhere with me (no phone touches that for images buit it's extra bulk where a lot of the time it's just not needed). Swtiched to the standard S9 and with Lightroom mobile, it's such a fun camera to use and already it's served a great suppliment to even my DLSR, I can get just as wide shots as my DSLR lens, wider considering my 50mm lens lives on my body for the most part and I rarely ever use zooms. I'd say as a photographer, the S9 is the best Android companion you can have. Sure, the Pxel 2 has the best camera but the limited colour range on the screen put the nail in the coffin for mobile editing for me, plus the headphone jack and SD expansion sold me on the S9. I found day to day the P20 was quite laggy and I experienced a lot of glitches and bugs, things like alarms not going off, random app crashes, glitches like Facebook comments simply not loading after being refreshed 10+ times and fullscreening videios would leave a huge black bar down the centre of the frame. I really wanted to like the P20 but I really just couldn't and that oversharpening was the biggest letdown. Above all else it could be great, it takes a software feature but it really caters to those who don't use Lightroom, it's more for those people who just take a picture and upload it straight to Instagram. It's very subjective but definitely worth knowing.

Samsung Galaxy is still the best and for super low light condition, I use the pro mode with increased exposure time and with headphone jack and the best screen ever, Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus is the best smartphone on the planet right now.

I have P20Pro. for daylight photos I prefer using 40mp, because of more details. but for hard conditions such as night, contrast lighting, I use 10mp, because it has RHDR mode, which has very wide dynamic range. MiTechGuy, compare this two modes and you'll see ;) In portrait mode, you can use 3x zoom to make portraits. There's no need to come closer with compare to s9, because huawei's zoom is better and closer) And, well, you mentioned it (3x zoom) at the beginning, but didn't use it

Depends on how you plan to use the device. If you plan and stage your shots, especially in low light where you have an extra 6 seconds to wait to snap that shot then the P20 is going to do the best job but for any - at the moment - shots the S9+ is going to do a better job. For me it would be the S9+ or Note 9.

The Huawei P20 pro camera isn't meant to be used like an S9+ or iphone like you did in this vid. Master AI automatically switches to portrait mode, night mode, or adjusts to subject lighting conditions. Shooting modes can be manually selected even with AI switched on. AI scene suggestions can be manually cancelled when the effect is not to my liking. Also, the P20 pro's strongest point is the zoom. One click to 3X, another click to 5X. No phone can beat the P20 pro even at 3X. The S9+ takes better selfies and brighter images and better video but the P20 pro can take better pictures with AI and its various shooting modes. The P20 pro has more tricks up its sleeves. The only caveat with my P20 pro is the lack of 4K stabilization. I'm still hoping, waiting for a software update on that.

I have a P20 Pro. First disappointed, regretting not getting the galaxy S9 plus which takes the best pictures in my opinion. But then I tried pro mode 40mega photo adjusting only ISO and the result is SOOOOO much better than regular 40mega on normal mode with all this silly sharpening. Plus the zoom is incredible and nothing beats the night mode. The P20 has larger battery, I don't play demanding games and my headphones are Bluetooth, a memory stick solves the problem of storage and I believe a curved screens like in the galaxy can break more easily and more expensive to replace. (Put a shortcut to access and delete raw 76MB images and just keep the converted ones).

Prefer s9+ overall. Sure, P20 pro has feats that are miles superior compared to the competitor and other smartphones on the market for that matter but it has also got its Achilles' heel which is the over-processed look it gives especially with the front camera. So I say S9+ due to its consistency.

I don't like the oversaturated results of the P20Pro and I hate the overexposed results of the S9+. Despite it's age, the Pixel 2 is still the overall champion. I'm really considering going back to the 2XL from my current OP6 just because the camera on that thing is that good, and still overall the best in any smartphone to date. But maybe that's just me.

Oneplus 6 has a better low light camera performance than Pixel 2 Xl,P2XL has great HDR+ processing but the overall image just looks blurry and soft. Not even close to the S9+. If you want instant shareable shots go for P2XL ,however the video quality and the great dynamic range during day time with so much shadow details allows me to do a lot of editing of my own with the S9+,plus no manual controls on the Pixel just kills it for me. So I can't take light streaks and shoot the night sky with a 10s shutter with the Pixel which is possible with the S9+.

DeepteshLovesTECH I personally like to take the phone out of the pocket and avail a few pictures. The 2XL is the absolute best at that in any condition. The software processing is unmatched. I don't like the S9+'s rrsults because it tends to brighten the image too much, to the point where shadows are almost inexistent. The contrast on the 2XL's photos are offering eye pleasing results, which is what most people preffer. If you go ahead and go for a "pro mode" thrn the results xan drastically change. For instance I spent a few minutes doing tweaks on my OP6 that allowed the camera to capture exactly what my eyes saw, more or less. I'd say I was really pleased with the results, but I wouldn't want to do that each time I take the phone out of my pocket. It's not convenient. As for the photos takes on my 2XL, I can do some light tweaks directly within the Photos app, as in snap the pic, open Photos l, tap on edit and screw around in under a minute with the given options. I call that a quick and efficient way to enhance the already great pictures. But that's hiw I look at it. It's subjective so I'm bot gonna claim my phone has the best overall camera as a fact. It's the best camera for me. PS: I'm not even close to being pleased with the results if the OP6's night shots. The automatic mode is a mess, bumping the iso unnecessarily, etc. That can be tweaked in future updates but it's not great the way it is right now.

The night mode is irrelevant in the comparison as it essentially is the same as what one can do on pro mode on the S9. Furthermore it taking 6 seconds makes it very unreliable to get a photo. This is why we look at the auto shots that are instant and more commonly used. That's where the S9 kills it.

Fed ex but not everybody knows how to use Pro mode, and if you use the pro mode on the Galaxy s9 unless you have a tripod the image will be blurred because of the movement, so it is not irrelevant

Fefo Fefosa It really isn't that hard to tweak a few settings on pro mode. It doesn't require a degree now. Even if one uses the night mode on the Pro and auto mode on the S9 it still favours the S9 simply because the 6 second wait will invite blur even through the slightest movement. With the S9 the fast capturing and advantage will minimise this and make it much easier for your average user. Who wants to wait 6 seconds to take a shot? If there's no moving object then pro mode is there on the S9. Auto S9 > Auto P20 PRO S9 > Night Mode P20 Therefore S9 > P20 Therefore irrelevant.

That's not correct. The OIS in night mode eliminates blur (supposedly), so that's not a reason. Waiting 4-6 seconds for the image is another story.

Craig Sherman Have you not understood how night mode works? It takes around 6 seconds for a shot regardless of variables. Therefore under such conditions regardless of stabilisation it will suffer and it also means you have to wait for 6 seconds which is a long time for one simple take. And this isn't even my point as you can do the same thing with Pro mode on the S9. The point is of the bat the most common form of taking photos via the auto mode is where the S9 demolishes the P20.

If you read my comment, I mentioned the wait time. For my purposes, I want higher resolution because I tend to crop my photos and the extra megapixels allow me to do that with far more clarity than what the S9 will allow simply because of the lack of pixels.
