The reason for the different image results when using night mode is that you were focusing on a darker area of the scenery. When using night mode the AI will use the focused object/area as base for the intensity of the exposure optimization. You can easily try this at home and even during the day. Point the camera at your TV, activate night mode and focus on the black TV screen. The camera will try to perfectly expose the dark screen and the rest of the picture will become quite bright. Now take the same picture again also with night mode, but instead focus on the white wall behind your TV. The overall picture will look much darker. The same thing happened when you chose to focus on something "more contrasty" when using the night mode. Next time focus on a lighter area of the scenery and you'll not get an over exposed picture 😉

I need help on the pro mode on my p30 pro about the best iso and shutter speed for low light and bright areas
@patrickw.11
@patrickw.11 5 жыл бұрын
@@vincentmallari238 If you are new to the Pro Mode, the best thing to do is to take a couple of pictures of different objects in bright and low light in Auto Mode first. Now look at the ISO and shutter speed stats in the gallery so you get a feeling for the different values. Then you can start experimenting with subtle changes to these values in Pro Mode. In my experience for daylight pictures you can always choose a lower ISO than the Auto Mode.

F number is the aperture value. The lower the number the best for low light. If you shot in a bright day the F number would be high, probably between f16 to f22. It's like your eye, in bright sunlight you squint, and in darkness your eyes open wider to gain more light. Nice review by the way, well done 👍

when you use the night mode(auto), meaning you did not make any adjustments on the ISO and shutter speed, the phone will automatically calculate the shutter and ISO in order to produce a balanced photo. like lowering the highlights and bringing up the shadows. the moment you adjusted the shutter and ISO in Night mode, the AI algorithm does not kick in. hence you get a brighter photo but has blown out the highlights.

@Alex-du3tj
@Alex-du3tj 5 жыл бұрын
I think I know what happened: The night mode captures multiple images and stiches them together to create a final image: that's what you're seeing when it's slowly getting brighter. If you put the shutter speed on 20 seconds it will capture multiple different (with different ISO and shutter speed) images for 20 seconds When using night mode on auto the phone will calculate the right ISO and shutter speed and use it's own algorithms to balance highlights and dark areas. When manually selecting night mode settings the phone will still capture the multiple images but wont use the smart algorithms for balancing the shot which will result in blown out areas. When using the pro mode the phone takes a "real" long exposure (which is why you can't see the progress while its taking the picture) resulting in a brighter image but with even more blown out parts.

Yes, I've seen the same thing myself on P20. The automode sucks in extreme low-light(unfixable noise, red tint, red vignetting etc.), but manual time gives much better results, which are comparable to long exposure in manual mode...
@markchadbourne8049
@markchadbourne8049 5 жыл бұрын
That's right, it's why using the same settings manually will get a different result. Also, the gentleman needs to focus in the right place, about 1/3rd into the scene for better sharpness across the scene.

The reason why we see such different results accross all the different modes isn't because of the focus point as another user pointed out, as you were picking focus at roughly the same area. Instead, you should keep in mind that this technology can be used both with and without a tripod, so Huawei has made sure that you can still get impressive pseudo long exposure night shots by just holding the phone in your hands. That means that, while in night mode and using auto settings, the phone will cancel the motion that is caused by your hands shaking, while preserving that long exposure look but also reducing the overall brightness of the image. This is why you're also able to see the preview and the countdown, it's pretty much shooting a lot of pictures and combining them (doing so called photo stacking, as popularized by Google's HDR+ on Pixel phones). When you input manual settings in night mode, the countdown goes away and the phone works just like in manual mode when you have a tripod. If you had the phone in your hands, you would have seen that the image was shakier.

The difference is that the night mode shot is computational where as the pro mode is shutter open for 20 seconds. Computational shot is multiple shots at varying exposure levels stitched together and the software tries to balance out the highlights, shadows and contrast.
@nicholasr82
@nicholasr82 3 жыл бұрын
On the second picture the camera took a broader range of shots each having different exposure levels and then stitched them together so you got a brighter picture normally this happens when the HDR is activated. F is the focus length. Also if you look at the histogram when looking at the metadata you can see where the light range has been gathered from. If the histogram is bunched up to the right or the left the camera sensor has only picked up light from low or high areas of the spectrum when you see it as a long curve from one end to the other the camera sensor has picked up not just the low or high tones, but it has also picked up the mid tones which gives you more of a complete picture. The aperture or focal length can be the same on different pictures as can the ISO but there are other factors that can increase the range of light the sensor gathers

The camera edit a picture like you do it in lightroom or Photoshop, Kontrast, lighting, sharpening, colors, all this parameters will edit from camera in the raw file and save as jpg, if you use a different mode so the camera edit it different but it's from exif the same raw file, go pro mode and activate save as raw so you can edit by yourself

If you have the correct information, you might understand, the difference between those two same metadata images with long exposure is just because, Huawei like many other phones relies on post processing and it plays a big role here. You get an enchanced image always and not the exact as in the exposure data. Which obviously you get with a normal camera.

Very reasonable comment ... basic photography skills help a lot, even when dealing with a smartphone camera. Aperture/ISO/ShutterSpeed - thats what photography is all about when it comes to light/exposure control. Good optical lenses are more important than high res sensors, and people tend to forget this when impressed by 40MP or more, and a well-chosen image composition is better than high tech. Good call for going back to the basics, like it :)

@Gilach

You are making mistake focusing on the dark parts of the scene as camera can't "see" in those areas enough to properly focus. If you use touch to select focus, you should focus on bright, not the dark areas of the scene, on the other hand when using manual mode, you can manually select infinite focus and that's ok if that is your intention, but there are ton of other slider to play with and perfectly tune the image, you shouldn't just copy settings from auto modes. This camera has ton of possibilities, problem is that 99% of the people don't understand how cameras work so auto mode and AI on is actually safest bet for most of the users.
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Touching has two effects as in all other cameras when you half-press shutter button and did not set up buttons & settings otherwise: it focusses AND it meters light. So a touch in a darker area is not only for focus, also for metering light which typically boosts brightness of the picture. You can easily try out with any camera. You are right on "too dark for focussing", depending on how capable the focus is (modern cameras can focus even in -3LV or down to -5LV) a camera might be able to focus in starlight-only even in dark parts of the live view. How good the P30 is with that, no idea. I also show in one part of the video how to manually focus in Pro Mode - which is a good solution if the P30 does not find focus because the focus area is too dark. Another option at night, as you correctly point out, is to take focus in a brigher area of the scene but with approximately same distance between camera and target. Then lock focus and change scene composition. Interesting what you mention on AI mode, I need to try this out more often. Have not used it that often by now. Thanks for the good hints for people who read this.

Interesting to see how the phone makers have used clever processing to get some very good results. Of course as photographer I would always be a camera user, but I can see for many people that this is plenty good enough or them. Perhaps not surprising how badly camera sales have fallen since phone makers have improved greatly their processing. Most phones I have used (and some cameras not all) bias exposure to the AF point so that explains the differences. Would I buy this? Probably not but for users who are into photos and want a small size then I can see they would mostly ignore a dedicated camera good enough is enough for most! I'd be fairly worried if I were a camera company!

F: 1.6 i think its about the native aperture of the camera y are using, main camera, or wide angle.

I also demonstrate manual focus in Pro Mode which works very nice, good alternative to autofocus.

Pro mode ..use only 40mp and doesn't apply any image processing or software tricks just a normal long exposure shot.. but in night mode it applies software tricks and in AI mode it depends heavily on an aggressive image processing, sharpness etc AI is the best in terms of details but not the brightest (balanced natural brightness) Night mode and pro are brighter but not as Sharp

if you use 40mp in pro mode you dont get to dump a raw image, which would be much more useful

So I just took photos of tonight's blue moon. Anything above 5x zoom has no raw file setting. So I had to settle for jpgs. It takes great photos of the moon nonetheless. Will tell you more once I inspect the jpegs.

hi, please increase the ISO to 800 or 1600 and take the Shutter Speed to 4 or 8 seconds on night mode. keep playing with it also with Pro mode. you gonna love it more than you do it now. P20 pro user from Switzerland (german part)

I think the difference is in software rendering. Same metadata but different settings for ai computation in each mode.

Most likely yes. The firmware is still premature, some promised features, by the way, loke dual video filming, are not yet available.

The problem is you were putting focus on different things on different shots. BTW, F1.6 is aperture. I think lowering it to F4~5 with 20s exposure will give you better results.
@paiman_
@paiman_ 5 жыл бұрын
You are right about that but you can't adjust aperture on a phone. Its purely fixed. Maybe in the future we will be able to but not as of now. There is no control over aperture. Only ISO and Shutter Speed.
@mathphotographer
@mathphotographer 5 жыл бұрын
Any change of aperture on smartphones like the P30 is software simulation. The aperture on the Leica lenses in the P30 is always fixed: 16mm wide angle with f/2.2, 27mm on primary lens with f/1.6 and 135mm on tele lens with f/3.4. If the phone shows some other aperture w.r.t. these lenses it is a software fake, not a real aperture change.
