I like to fix stuff but I also like the saying "If it Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It". The hubs are working well enough and the abundant grease in there when you opened it up (instead of water) tells me that they'll be fine, and have been fine. Nice to check and see just what's going on in there sometimes too. I really like the grill design idea and it will give this project a cool look. Lots of space in front of the radiator under the hood for a toolbox or spare oil or what not. The play in the tie rod won't matter until the day you decide to licence it for the road, which if I understand you, is never. This will be a back road buggy as I understand it and a little play in those tie rod ends won't matter. I like the idea of cutting the side off an oil can to make a small parts cleaner. It even has a drain cap and a way to pour it off into another container. I'm always using tin cans or my oil drain pan for cleaning depending on the size, but I like that idea of the oil can. On another note, I've been cleaning up the end cover internals for the 580CK and I found some parts in there gummed up and stuck. I just finished a thorogh cleaning (in a tin can) and have the cover ready to install tomorrow. Maybe that was the fuel starvation problem. The project car is coming along well. Keep posting videos of your progress. As I said earlier in another thread, The left engine of my Lear Jet is out for service so I won't be able to pick you up for that trip to Boston next week. You'll have to find your own way to the symposium.

I have an actual parts cleaner. Brand new got it for free. I never used it. It takes gallons of solvent, you have to plug it in, you have to bring your parts to it. It needs power as well. I'd like it if I were working in a garage and it was right there ready to go but as of now it just seems like a pain in the rear. I have plenty of old jugs laying around and I can generally do what I need to do with a cup of mineral spirits. To get that bearing apart for real service, there are two lock washers that are bent over the nuts inside the hub. If it were split pins or something I wouldn't mind it so much. It felt good, sounded fine, looked like good grease in there so heck with it. The hubs themselves won't be doing any work anyhow. I just want to cruise the mountain a couple times and I'm probably not even going to get out of 1st gear. Since this video I've had it fired up, put it in gear and engaged the clutch just enough to creep it a few inches just to feel it out a little bit. It's going to be kind of hairy to drive but not terrible. If I get a couple miles out of this build it'll be pretty much mission accomplished. I'm sure it'll hold together OK, just that building it is the fun. After it's running and driving and dialed in I'm not sure what I'll do with it. I just wanted to drive my Flathead. Maybe the next step would be to make it actually look like something that someone might want to drive for fun. That 580 of yours sounds so close to running. Anything stuck up and gummy in that pump, you'd figure that has to be it. But then how many lines have holes in them? Is there a shop that does diesels in your area where you might have the lines tested? If they have an injector pop tester they'd probably be able to hook your lines and injectors to it and find out just what you're in for on that aspect. You've certainly got staying power and I have to commend you for it.
