Steve, When I was a youngster, about 6 or 7, my grandfather would take me on a ride to Main Street ,in the small town we lived next to. And parallel park facing traffic, and we would play a game. If I could correctly identify the make and model of an approaching car( before it passed the hardware store) about fifty yards from our location, he would give me a nickel, and for every correct identification, and take away one for every incorrect one.And I did very well! That was in the fifties, I’m 73 now. Your vast knowledge of “ Automobilia” reminds me of those past times with my grandfather which illistrates how cars had individuality, and could told apart from each other, even by a five or six year old( A lost art) as it were! Your ability to tell us the make and model and approx. year of hub caps, evokes those memories. Unlike today where the only identifiers for even makes of cars requires seeing the registration or so to even identify the make. As they seem to be ( cookie cutter ) styling now! Please continue with your “ hub cap “ videos, at least for us more mature fans !!!

Thank you for your story. What a COOL Grandfather you had. I would bet he had just as much fun ( or more) hearing you name the cars as they passed by . Also, you are correct. Cars nowadays are way to much alike.

That Buick hubcap at 2:35 appears to be from an early '80s Skylark which was an "X" car, not a "J" car. There wouldn't be a "J" car until the 1982 model year. Yes, full size Olds and there were two designs of those, one from Norris Industries and one from ITT. I have them on my '84 Delta 88 and I merged the two styles. The clips and the method of locking retention differ between the designs. That could also be a 1977 Caprice as that was the first year for the downsized model. Yes and no on the wheel covers. GM would have the colored ones listed in the parts book until inventory ran out and then it was "paint to match" after that point. That looks like maybe the older Cutlass, as I had a '79 Cutlass with blue color keyed hubcaps and it was slightly different than that. Trim pieces were like that. Every Trans Am interior NOS trim piece I bought was dark blue with a 'paint to match' note in the parts book. SEM trim paint did the trick when done right.....

Poverty cap was standard on Impalas at least through 1969. 1957 Chrysler cap is for the 300…I imagine quite valuable. 1957-8 cap identified as possibly Studebaker is once again 1968 Oldsmobile 88.

Steve Magnante's Hubcap Bingo sounds like a fun game, I noticed some 1970's Ford Wheel covers that made their way onto Aussie produced ZF/ZG and ZH Fairlanes and equivalent LTD's, Interesting that Ford used current US model parts although our Luxury Fords came with 14 inch steel wheels. Chrysler Australia badged and manufactured cars particularly the 60's Dodge A body versions tended to get 4 year old Mopar parts bin stuff, something I found scouring Rockauto, Summit and a few other awesome US parts vendors :-D Find the chassis/Body combo and go back 4 or 5 years and Voila all the fiddly stuff available brand spanking new. Mopar here got Dog dish with fancy trip ring combinations depending on the Vehicle spec with Poverty pack cars getting a Dog Dish Hubcap and Fancy Regals, Mexicana Coupes and Chrysler by Chrysler getting fancy trim rings to compliment with one or two getting colour coded Hub caps. And here I was thinking this was going to bore me to tears and im in hook line AND sinker! :-)

This is really is more impressive than general car info recall. You might remember the caps that came on your car, but every car that the US produced? I do remember sitting on my friend’s front porch and playing a game where, after dark, we would guess the make and model of a car coming down the road, based only on the headlight and running light configuration. The farther out you could call it was the key to winning.

Well, you got a few of them mixed up with the years but a good overall job. Yes, I was always good at knowing the hubcaps and wheel covers. My grandfather had the turbine wheel covers (like the Riviera) on his '71 Malibu 4 door hardtop with the crossed flags center. After he traded it in (for a Pacer), I spotted his car in the new owner's driveway (We lived just outside Boston, my grandparents lived on the CT seashore). I told him I saw his car in New London and he said there were a lot of cars just like his. How many dark brown '71 Malibu 4 door hardtops with a black vinyl roof, tan interior and turbine hubcaps and the 400 did you or anyone else see back in the '70s or now for that matter??? A Malibu optioned just like that one was a rarity.

Replacement covers may not have been painted, only the ones from the factory. new cars are like that with body color mirrors, grills and bumper inserts. Parts need to be painted when replaced most don't find out until they open the box.

Those big GM fake wire wheel hub caps don’t look too bad, as far as that sort of thing goes, they look incredibly complex, and I’m sure they cost quite a bit. There must have been a handful of subcontractors that supplied all the hubcaps to the manufacturers, as they did with wheels.
