Some states are actually hopefully opting out of DST this year (2024). Oregon and Idaho already have bills that have advanced all the way past the state senate with the final vote on Tues. 2/20. The absence of DST in the spring and summer months would be a non-issue. Who cares if sunrise would become 4:15 - 4:30am? No one is forcing you to get up that early. With DST, the clock time is "later" but work starts at the same time. So, if you wake up at 7am, you are really waking up at 6am on DST. 6am standard is the same time as 7am DST. Permanent standard time > changing the clocks twice a year > Permanent DST.

I couldn't agree more with Dr. Hatter. We should only be on Standard Time, always!! That would be the day when when we abolish Daylight Savings Time. I'll campaign for it. I think the problem is is the way we change back to standard time. They blame the shorter days on Standard Time when they are naturally getting shorter anyways.

It seems to me that the issue is less what the clock says and more how demanding employers and schools are about when people are expected to show up and be functional. The second factor is whether you are a lark or night owl. One size start times just doesn’t fit human beings. Personally I hate, in the Northeast, how it gets dark at 3:45 pm and look forward to it staying lighter until 4:45 pm. However, I set my own schedule and don’t set 8 am meetings. The person who said it above has it exactly right: with rigid work starting times and school schedules, this dramatically cuts into people’s sleep. And less sleep means more problems of all sorts, accidents, disease, poor performance. With one set time all year round however, combined with flexible start times culturally, things could get better. But that’s unlikely to happen. Little children who tend to wake earlier start school later than teens who need more morning sleep. It would be great to put “sleep” and “flexible start times” on the agenda along with a DST.

What I'd tell people who say "oh, you're just a morning person who doesn't want me to have evening light" is that they're getting up an hour earlier anyway with daylight savings time, so they're not getting extra daylight, they're just being tricked into waking up an hour earlier and thinking they get extra evening light. Night owls should love year round standard time, it doesn't force you to get up earlier and if you really want that extra hour, just wake up an hour earlier. I'm a morning person who gets up at times like 3:30 AM to 5 AM and is asleep by 10 PM most nights, my boyfriend is a night owl who goes to bed well after midnight, we both agree, abolish DST and enact year round standard time.

Fun fact: Japan stopped observing Daylight Saving Time in September 1951 after the war efforts. Nobody complains about sunrise and sunset being too early at 4:24am and 7:01pm, respectively. In the United States, sunsets in nearly all locations would be later than 7:01pm by 30 minutes to an hour. If Japan hasn't changed the clocks forward in over 70 years, the US can do the same. DST is a mirage, fooling the brain into thinking it is later than it actually is. Instead of springing forward to Daylight Saving in March, it would be better to just keep standard time all year, with summer hours starting earlier and ending earlier as an option, to mimic DST for those who want the "extra Daylight" later in the day, without changing the clocks. The morning people can just wake up earlier, while the rest of us can just sleep in one hour later beyond sunrise.

Standard time is normal time most closely aligned with the sun. Daylight Saving Time is manipulated time. It is abnormal. It is so unhealthy mentally, emotionally, physically. By deliberately changing time, we affect future events. We cause increased car accidents, heart attacks, strokes, suicides, depression. Events like the recent bridge incident in Baltimore literally would not have happened if we never changed the clocks for Daylight Saving Time. DST literally caused this tragic event. Who knows what events would occur if we left the clocks alone, but at least we wouldn’t have had a hand in meddling with them. We change fate by changing time. But man is blind and ignorant. He simply can’t do what is right, but continually does evil.

In the northern hemisphere, solar noon is also earliest in November and latest in February, accentuating DST’s delirious effects, causing it to vary by almost an hour and a half!

In the last 15 years or so since the time change was moved up to March, it feels 10x harder to get used to DST, than it was when it was in April. I hope eventually the US moves to permanent standard time. Moving the sunrise times in June from 4:30am ST to 5:30am DST does not make the extremely early sunrise times any later. 5:30am on DST feels like 4:30am on standard time because they are exactly the same time of day, just the hour is inflated by 1. Same thing with sunsets. 8:30pm on DST is the same as 7:30pm ST. I'd rather sleep in until the regular time in June, instead of waking up one hour early. People make such a big deal out of it. But if you are able to sleep in one hour on weekends on DST, you can do standard all year.

Seems like a really nonsensical argument. Keeping it consistent makes sense, but there should be no difference between staying on daylight saving time and staying off daylight saving time. In both cases you’re not switching. In both cases you’re allowing for the symmetry. The argument just makes no sense.

I will happily lose an hour of sleep for more daylight in the evening. When you have young kids life feels so bleak when it’s dark at 5 pm. I just moved the California recently, and I had no idea how much shorter the days were on the west coast. In Texas we could take our kids to the park and play outside for another hour after dinner. I know California politicians are pushing for for year-round standard time, but I think my soul will die and wither away. Year-round DST sounds perfect - 6pm sunsets for winter/7 pm sunsets for summer. Can’t we all just sleep in a little longer? Would that be so terrible?

Daylight saving time may be bad for your health, but I think if you made it, or standard time, (which is what most people would prefer) permanent, it would be just as bad, if not worse. Where I live, this is what things are like now. Winter months:: 8:01 AM Thursday, December 21, 2023 (EST) 5:05 PM Thursday, December 21, 2023 (EST) If daylight saving time was permanent: 9:01 AM Thursday, December 21, 2023 (EST) 6:05 PM Thursday, December 21, 2023 (EST) I don't know about the evenings, but 9:01 is too late for sunrise, imo. Summer months: 5:58 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) 9:16 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) If standard time was permanent: (which is what most people would rather have) 4:58 AM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) 8:16 PM Wednesday, June 21, 2023 (EDT) I don't know about the evenings, but 4:58 is too early for sunrise, imo. I say stick to changing our clocks, even if it's a hassle. It's the only way to get the right amount of daylight in the mornings all year round. The only part of the world that shouldn't have to worry about that is everywhere closest to the equator.

I just hate it when it’s dark, black night at 5 pm. I wanna be outside playing with my kids - not cooped up inside with them begging for screen time for the last few hours of the day. I’m a morning person, and would happily do year-round DST. I love waking up when it’s still dark outside. Definitely depends on where you live tho. I think sunset is too early on the west coast winters. I’m so much happier during DST in California. I’m guessing it’s probably better for the economy for businesses to have an extra hour of daylight during business hours.

Sam Hattar has no facts in arguing DST is bad for our health. Its the time change that is harmful not staying on a specific time frame like ST or DST. There is no scientific evidence one is better than the other. Daylight saving time has shown us that an extra hour of day light in the evening is very beneficial to activity's rather than the extra hour of day light while most of us are sleeping or getting ready for work. That hour of day light in the morning is basically wasted.
