Nice to see a Ford Sierra again, and a rare 2-door too. Growing up in the 80s, Sierras were everywhere and pretty much everyone's dad drove one. They were just the popular work-a-day family cars that you hardly noticed because they were just so numerous. Then, all of a sudden, they were all gone. I miss the old Sierra. They're like your best friend, not loud or flashy, but solid, dependable and always there for you when you need them. Where have they all gone?

1989, I was sitting in the passenger seat of my mate's "D" reg Astra GTE ( 8v ) and as we left a round-a-bout to enter a dual carriageway, a middle-aged bloke pulled alongside in his XR4i and grinned at us, so Dave ( my mate ) floored the GTE, and we were promptly blown away by the fella in the XR4i. No problem at all.

The car I grew up with was an '88 Mitsubishi L300. 6-seater van, basic spec. That means: vinyl floors, plastic headliner, plain pressboard door cards on the sliding doors and rear hatch (and by plain I mean totally untreated, they'll immediately get dark water marks if you ever open a door in the rain), no sound deadening whatsoever. Simplified dashboard (no clock, no rev counter, no glowplug indicator etc, no variable speed wipers, no automatic rear-door locks) and quite a few other details (among the least notable of them the lack of make-up mirrors on the passenger-side sun visor). Oh and no power steering! I learned to drive in that car and parking always made sure you had strong arms! Once you were moving the large wheel made driving fairly easy but turning the tyres of the standing car required serious force. Top speed with the 69 BHP 2.5l straight Diesel was around 130 km/h according to the speedo, probably somewhere around 120 in reality but going past 120 on the speedo was strongly discouraged by the fact that you felt as if you had a hole in the tank. I adored that car, although I do admit that the 96 9-seater GLX my parents drive now does have its merits. At the end of its lifespan (2012 at 245k km) the '88 was completely rusted through in spots, needed a new cylinder head, new brakes, new rear leaf springs, the electrics were iffy but it still ran just fine! The last time I drove it for more than a quick round around the block one of the rear number plate lights was out (wire had fallen off thanks to corrosion), none of the three bulbs in the dash was working anymore (so at night you had to guess your speed based on the rev counter between your ears) and the MOT was two months overdue (in Austria you're sort-of allowed to run a car for four months with an overdue MOT but if the police consider the car unsafe they can shut it down immediately). Interesting trip I can say! But the van was loaded up with furniture up to the roof and two people and it was a lovely ride!

I suppose the lotus cortina is crap? And modern corvettes have leaf springs. I suppose they aren't sports cars either? I suppose you could call it a sports coupe but it is a car so.. btw they weren't "based" on a tina, they just used some of the mechanics. Based on means they used most of. Some old fiestas used escort parts but that doesn't mean they were based on them..

My brother owned an early 70's Renault 15TS (the one in the video looks like the later facelift version) back in the late 70s. It was a lovely car - comfortable and respectably quick with the 1565cc Renault 16TS engine under the bonnet.

Well done on the crank handle! Further to your comment about the lack of Bedford CF ice cream vans, they were the vehicle of choice in Australia for that job as well, and plenty remain on the job. Here they were fitted with an engine of decent size - a Holden straight 6 of 3-ish litres, but they nevertheless never geared them for anything over 50mph. I had one for a time, and the front brake drums had never from new been machined particularly centrally, as it was never expected to go fast, and it took a lot of mucking about with balancing to get the thing to be civilised at 60mph+. There are a few cars whose absence surprised me at this show - Rover P3, P5, P6, SD1, Triumph 2000/2500, Standard Vanguards, pre-Capri British Fords, Wolseleys, and of course Rolls and Bentley. I seem to remember that the Ford Taunus TC @21:48 was the German equivalent to the MkIII Cortina (not the MkIV.) The replacements for the Taunus TC and Cortina MkIII were the Taunus TC2 and the Cortina MkIV, which were virtually identical - a symptom of the impending demise of the UK car industry, as also seen in Vauxhall and Opel cars.

That was a great Video. Star of the show for me was the 1300 base model capri, they are rarer than hens teeth. For real basic it is hard to beat a mk1 escort base model which were mainly fleet cars.1100 cc, vinyl seats,rubber floor mat and cardboard door and side panels. Truly an unloved spec so survivors must be scarce .

That Ford Zodiac @ 02:57 is my favorite of the entire show, however, that Nash Metropolitan in the same frame might have tried to follow me home! How difficult is it to get classics through the MOT??, and do they receive any 'special consideration'?? I lived near Killarney, then Dublin (Stillorgan), for a total of two years, and sweat bullets getting an Escort through it.

A very good selection of automotive styles there, also well done on the correct starting handle technique. A work colleague, back in the day, had a rear engined Renault 10 when we replaced the water pump the battery was too low to crank it and I used the starting handle/ jack crank and it worked a treat. My friend who had owned the car for 2 years was astounded because he didn't know about the hand start facility!

I love how hubnut is always attracted to the poverty models of cars. Most cars that were saved will be the top of the line trim levels so to see a base model is always exciting. I was drawn to the Audi coupes, Triumph Stags and that super rare Mercedes Benz 600 limo. The UK has the best car shows. In the United States if your car isn't expensive, they don't want your car to be present at the shows. Such snobbery really!

Was that a Peerless that was behind the Rebel? Super Minx - I used to drive the Singer version, very steep castor angle hang on to the wheel when you pull away from a juction. You have a thing about headlamp (and other) wipers, I always use my handkerchief. No, it's an nstrument panel.

Ahh the joys of a starting handle i used to start my father's austin Cambridge every time because he wouldn't change the starter motor. Also a neighbour across the road had a morris 1100 with a hole right in middle of number plate, which I thought was strange being transverse, until he told me one day he had run in back of a car and the exhaust pipe made the hole 😃

Yeah, my father regularly used me as a starter motor on his A60 before he went off to work in the morning. He was too skint to renew the battery, and it being an automatic, we couldn't bump start it. Try to get kids do that nowadays??????

A lot of these car brands I have in my Matchbox collection. Now I look back in my past I had also classic car s. Quite commen cars but today you see them anymore. My first car was an Opel Kadett D from 1985. My second car a Seat Marbella from 1989. I wished I still had this one. Although it didn t had a crumple zone but it was fun to drive.. The Opel bought too early. The 1.6 drove well but rusted just as fast. Years later i bought myself a Fiat 126 from 1972. Very fun car to drive and own. Such a shame i had to sell it.

That silver Renault 4 started off in my part of the world, down on the south coast in Hampshire. And you I'm sure know that the Cortina mk5 should really be called the Cortina 80, as was its official designation...
