Ah yes, purchasing with the heart! I've done that a few times, last one was a Volvo 340 which had all the warning signs of a shoddy restoration and horrible welding plus a dodgy MOT, but I bought it because I had wanted one since I was a child. Eventually got it running sweet but not after a garage destroyed the engine by over tightening the cams in the alloy heads.

Your Camry episode reminds me of a similar folly I committed years back. After the dreaded tin worm got the better of my Renault 16, I made a deal for an Audi 100GL, the first incarnation of the 100. By the time I had driven it the 45 minutes home I realised I had done a wrong 'un. The seats were uncompromisingly hard and uncomfortable, the suspension was soft, yet very 'crashy' over bumps, the body roll on corners was nearly as much as the Renault and the automatic gearbox had become very lumpy once it got really hot. 'Stick with it' I thought 'it might seem better with time.' In the next three months the battery died, the sunroof leaked, the alternator failed, the head gasket failed, it didn't get any more comfortable and lastly, on the way to my final apprenticeship exams, a driveshaft broke and severed a brake line. I patched it up, sold it to a work colleague of my brothers' and said good riddance. The new owner had two trouble free years of motoring in the Audi. The only thing that car did well...it used petrol in vast quantities, it could really mop it up. It was replaced by a Renault 12. That 100GL put me off Audi forever. Against my better judgement, I never learn, a couple of years ago I acquired an A4 estate. That lasted ten days before I concluded that it was just as awful as the 100 and it was banished from my driveway. I am advised, if I ever suggest another Audi, of any sort, divorce number three will loom large!

You (or rather the new owner) can always keep the original engine, fix it when it's out, then if a head gasket goes on the replacement engine, or something else, they've got the then good original engine to pop in again. At the minimum they've got the original to send on with the car to the next next owner for them to go back to numbers matching as it becomes more collectible with time.

I had a similar buy with the heart situaiton many years ago. I was a travelling salesman and would pass a maroon toyota supra parked up on a garage forecourt. It was there for months and never moved. I plucked up the courage to enquire about it. The garage where it was parked didn't own it, but I was steered to the owner who had part exchanged it. It transpired that the water pump had failed and it was leaking coolant at a furious rate. Nonetheless, it started and drove very well. The guy wanted shut of it, so we haggled and I picked it up for £150. The intention was to put it back on the road, however, with family commitments and other things, it sat on my driveway for a few months. One Sunday morning, I was in the shower getting ready to attend a friends christening, when there was a knock at the door. My then wife, shouted for me. I got out of the shower and stood at the door in a towel. Some guy wanted to buy the supra. I asked him how much he wanted to offer, he replied £400. I had nothing to loose so I countered with £1000. We haggled and eventually settled on £500. We completed the papaerwork in my kitchen (me still in the towel) and off he drove happy as larry. I was even happier, £350 up and not a penny spent on it. Only time I ever made a profit on a car.

On the Fairmont/Camry comparison, the Ford has the engine installed in a sensible orientation, with thus far fewer impossibilities created for repair jobs. You could replace a head gasket or head yourself on the Ford, not that it's likely to need one. Toyota's on the other hand and in my experience are typically under designed in the head gasket area.

I have bought lots and lots and lots of cars, in all kinds of condition. However I have one set of rules that is hard and fast, no overheating, no signs of recent overheating, and never buy a car with plain water in the coolant bottle . In Australia, the suspension tune for our Camrys, would probably have been softer for our appalling roads. Toyota Australia made a specific "Touring" version, with firmer suspension settings, but I think it was only available in sedan and only V6. A wide body 4 cyl base model and it's "tall" tyres, are simply amazing with their long travel suspension. Anyone who has driven the short dirt road from the "below Hume Weir wall" fishing area to the trout farm, will know how bad that is - and yet, even though you go slow, the car will not bottom out and is smooth - quite remarkable. After a famous Australian suspension company, stuffed up a front end shock absorber replacement and top mounting of the struts, which resulted in the steering "gathering" on twisting rubber mounts, the car still did another 100,000 or more with a full 100 km/h hit on the front end on one side, into a full depth large surface area pothole on a corner and downhill and sounded horrific. But It was checked by our mechanics on the hoist and everything was in correct alignment. Not loose. No other suspension maintenance in it's 600,000 km history. Still no rattles. Tyres - Bob Jane All Rounders. They actually work, long term. Also our car had no ABS - 1995 - But when new it would not lock up the brakes in full braking IN THE WET. Very impressive. Only warranty was brake clicking when new. Transmission as new. A few cv boots, sometimes requiring shaft combinations. Alternators. Muffler ? I would hate to think what state the catalytic converters were in. Didn't effect performance. Seats firm - but that's good for huge journeys. Kangaroo strike - side. Repaired Religious timing belt replacements and kit. Cooling system fantastic. Never ever went above normal - even on 46°c days.!!! It's REAL competitor was the Australian Mitsubishi Magna - South Australia. Wagon. 2.6 efi Astron 4 from the original Sigma - Australia designed the wagons. Both on a smaller scale than Falcon and commodore and not rear drive. Mitsubishi actually "angered Mercedes Benz when they patented their ABS 3+ system ?? Where the ABS worked on gravel roads - allowing some locking to occur as the wheels DUG in and gave steering and shorter braking distances, due to the build up of a dirt wedge in front of the wheels - otherwise, like the Mercedes, you just keep traveling off into the forest. They tested and displayed this in a wheels magazine. ABS works completely different on gravel to bitumen. Our sigmas and magna's were basically redone galants until about the advent of Diamante's - non hardtop versions. Original magna was a galant cut in half and widened with only the 2.6 available. The galant version was available in NZ. Over time, 2.4, 3.0 V6 and then 3.5 V6 versions were available. The last ones before the 380, despite ugly looks, were brilliant as a 3.5 V6 5 speed auto ( don't touch the 4 speeds ) - incredibly economical. Smooth punchy - there was even a factory dedicated LPG version. Very nice interiors. I'd say, ultimately not as long term trouble free as the Camrys. 46°c days were nothing for the A/C - still antarctic cold and powerful fan. Something that many Europeans can't and or never have, matched. Must change and top up gas though, because it is also the systems lubricant and run it periodically in winter so the seals don't dry out, otherwise it can result long term in expensive a/c failure, with condenser AND compressor. Always double check your service technician ACTUALLY DID check the gas level when ticking it off the service manual schedule.!!!???? The 380, with the big 3.8 V6 ( bigger than the Avalon and Camry and commodore, was also a very good car , chosen from the US and remodified for Australia. Ford, Holden and Mitsubishi all went out on a bang. Sad that Territory got crappy jag diesel - should have been the LPG dedicated IL 6 4.0 litre - Barra. And still keep the option of AWD for the six. Many Australian journalists, rated it better than a BMW x5 on it's release. Far cheaper and to run and long term. Adjustable peddle box option. The Holden adventures, was also brilliant, but 5.7 litre v8 had horrendous fuel consumption and horrible 4 speed auto. But the best steering I have felt, via drive to the front wheels ( Oldsmobile toranado?? ) Thanks Adrian - enough warbling.

Actual here in Oz there's no standard on plugs as long as its 7 pins ( we changed that about 35 years ago ) as you can have flat or round doesn't matter and also with tow balls they have to be 50mm for about 35+ years some one put a old tow ball which was the standard then . Also the plug adapters are a pain and cause a lot of headaches
@steved37022 жыл бұрын
My Dad bought his trailer new in the late '70s with the flat seven-pin plug. They've been around a while, but never really displaced the round ones. There's an extended version of the flat one which allows for electric brakes and a few other circuits while remaining compatible with the standard seven-pin version. Perhaps we should have seen this coming and sent Ian the trailer half of the flat seven-pin plug pre-emptively. We could all see this coming, after all! 😁

I had a 2007 Camry in California, where the roads are a network of potholes and craters that are interconnected by tiny pieces of intact tarmac. The suspension on that Camry too was extremely hard and unforgiving. I recall Clarkson doing a review of the generation of Camry you had and he said that it felt as if the suspension was "made of wood". Seems to be a problem with Toyota - it was the same story with an '08 Yaris and an '07 Corolla.

Would like to know where that Camry was built. In NZ, they were built in Australia and they are exceptional vehicles. I had a 1996 wagon but a 2.2 4 cyl manual which gave me an incredible run - 461,000kms before I sold it for someone to teach their child to use a manual and for what I spent on it over the years...a starter, an exhaust manifold and a radiator...incredibly reliable compared to other crs I have had. It was fast, smooth, brilliant to cover long distances in a hurry and swallowed huge loads as well as pulling heaps of huge loads with it (some over a ton without brakes!) I would have it back in a heartbeat. They were exceptionally popular with taxi drivers in New Zealand usually getting 500 - 600kms which I would have got if I hadnʻt abused mine so much pulling large loads into rough country. You obviously got a very rare lemon. These are known world wide as being one of the most reliable cars ever made...

I have spend some money to repairs but only for normal wear parts. I hope this doesn't happend to me. I am from Finland so petrol is very expensive. I have to deal with that. Great content in your channel mate.

The Camry's maroon and dual wiper charms were always lost on me. It represents a low point in Japanese design when Toyota and others were desperately aping European styling, which was itself at an aesthetic nadir. Your Daimler was previous top lemon, but at least that had cool factor, albeit through the draught in the floor. I still miss the Favorit, though the Olcit was peak Hubnut.

I think this🀄Camry Estate styling is very clean, very elegant! I would be happy to have one, twin rear rainremovers and all. Thanks, I'll leave the head gasket leak at the seller's place for them to bin.

I can see why you bought the Toyota, it could have been a shrewd move. When you first bought it I remember you mentioning while you were on test drive the trader turned the heater up and the fan on - bit of a give away really, I would have walked away there and then. Never mind you live and learn eh? Fascinating rear wipers though.

Camry? right car, wrong engine! Still, it is overall in great condition and will be a lovely car when fixed. To show how robust Falcons were, the Australian taxi fleet was pretty much all LPG Falcons. Now? Camry hybrids. In all honesty, if I was driving a long distance, I'd rather be in a Falcon than a Camry.

Sad to see the Camry go, especially the twin tailgate wipers lol - Hope that the new owner will fix it up and take care of it ! Be careful when leaving the keys in the ignition and slamming the driver's door - I did this once in an E39 BMW and got the keys locked inside the car when it automatically locked its doors lol - Luckily my mum had a spare key to the car in the house !

I think you're paraphrasing me there Crispin. I didn't buy it to get views, but certainly true that no-one would watch if I bought a boring modern. I bought it purely because I wanted it. Bad judgement is a thing.

As you know Ian, I've got a V6 Camry, I'm currently in the process of changing the engine to a much less used 280,000km engine with a manual behind it. I've made the decision to keep it going. I've recently just bought a dash clock for it from Lithunania haha. I managed to find a RHD dash clock. Shame it didn't work out for you mate. As an owner I can say the V6 camry does like happily sitting on 150km/h on the motorway lol....

Generally very reliable. 350.000kms is not unheard of. The later models even more so. Here in NZ we had the 2.2 4 cylinder option and the V6. Very comfortable to drive. Still a few on the road 30 years later. I have a 2010 model, not a single issue in 30.000 kms, 230k on the clock.

Never know- if new owner doesnt part it out, with a bit of TLC she'll probably clock the earth in Km's. AU's are just a RWD Camry- will go forever with even a sniff of love. My Dad owned an AU3 ex taxi that had 700,000km on the clock, had motor rebuilt once & gearbox 3 times, diff was tightened up & new wheel bearing and suspension rubbers done. He & Mum towed a Poptop caravan around Australia twice, with the only issue being the exhaist crapped itself & a few tires blown; they only sold it maybe 3 years ago for a Cherokee

You must do a KZbin Windscreen Wiper Medley of all the wipers(maybe not ALL) you've ever videoed. Withe a time stamp index. Then on miserable evenings you can quickly cheer yourself up with a quick swish of your favourites.

It is sad the Camry did not work out. It is also said that there are not a lot of UK fans of this era Camry. If this car was being sold in the USA, you might have ether broken even on this car or made a profit even in its current condition. 1992-1996 Camrys are sought after here (especially the wagons). Somebody who bought it here would probably not be even screwing with that engine that is in the car, they would would just yank it out and replace it with another engine. It is the route I would be taking if I had bought it as around my way i can snag a used and warrantied Camry engine for this car for less then $1000. Maybe add about $300 more for various parts (like the timing belt) and a weekend of my time to install the whole thing and it would be back on the road. I have done enough engine and trans replacements to have an assembly line like procedure to go about it. Don't feel too bad, i am sure a lot of folks made a bad choice or 2 on a car. i bought a used Volvo S40 and it came back to haunt me. Even though it was cheap to repair it since I did all the work, I got tired of it and dumped it a few months later. However in the end it worked out and you got the belingo. I think the Fairmont should be perfect for towing duty.

Don’t worry about it Ian, how could you resist that?? Camry estates are like hens teeth now. Hopefully it goes to a good owner 👍🏻
