Did you ever get in touch with Paul Woods, of Woodsport, for advice? Most of his experience with the Camry V6 involves fitting them into MR2s but he probably knows more about the engines than anybody else in the UK and he's usually happy to provide advice by phone too. Last time I was there (which was, admittedly, a few years ago) he also had a big pile of used bits left over from customers who'd had fancy new bits fitted so he might be able to find you a cheap replacement cylinder head too, if that's what you need.

Those without a KZbin channel who are stung in a similar way can’t be so sanguine about it - no doubt why Ian took the time to point out that although he’s chosen not to go down that route, someone in a similar situation has consumer rights they could choose to try and use.

A few people are under the illusion that Japanese and German marque cars go on forever with just an oil change, hence they keep a good price, but at the end of the day they rust and break things just like any other. Besides this is has more entertainment value than an £800 Mondeo or Vectra wagon that has been beaten into the ground but just keeps on going, and if not the parts are cheap and all about.

Toyotas mostly go on forever. This series of V6 engine were known for doing head gaskets. Toyota lost the plot with their head gaskets when they went asbestos free in this era. (They adressed this properly with the alloy 1MZFE V6 just after this) Pretty much everything else about this model Camry is bullet proof. The 2.2 litre 4 cylinder version in this same body shape will go on forever with basic servicing. I have seen half a million kms on 4 cyl versions on an original engine here in Australia. In every other way they are better than a Vectra. Vectras and Astras are a joke here. They marketed well and drove well but became a headache quickly. Once the heads are fixed properly he will have a great car. He has bought a tidy example so it isn't too bad spending the resources on it.

Solid choice on not going with the hassle. Cooling issues is the one thing I thoroughly check a car for now buying second hand because I've been burned too many times (no pun intended). Ex-Mrs had an MG F that went through 3 heads in 2 years. I recently dated a woman briefly who also had an MG F and on our first trip out I was greeted by the oh so familiar sickly sweet smell of hot coolant wafting from the engine compartment behind us. I didn't have the heart to tell her. The relationship didn't last and I'm willing to bet the head on her MG F didn't either. Now when I buy a car I insist on seeing it fully warmed up and then standing until the fan kicks in and inspect for any signs of leaks, mayo, radweld, etc.

Sounds like my car buying history Ian. Swings and roundabouts.Don't beat yourself up over it. Still a lovely car and we're all about not throwing good old stuff away.

I had a similar situation when I bought my Mercedes from a dealer - lots of things hidden or bodged which should have been disclosed (not to mention the 'full' service history which was promised to be forwarded to me and has never turned up) which I didn't have the chance to inspect properly as we were in that semi-lockdown phase at the time and it was 100 miles away. It's just not worth my time, emotional hassle or money to pursue it, and I got a decent enough deal on it that I can still fix it up and sell it on when the time comes without much of a loss. I didn't even get dual rear wipers to soothe the pain!

I totally understand Ian, I've been were you are now with a car, and you're right, it isn't worth the hassle, it's another one of those lessons in life, that we hope don't happen again. I hope the costs keep reasonable for the jobs that need doing on the Camry.🤞🏻🙏🏻👍🏻

Bad luck Ian but admire your honesty. I still think it's a lovely looking motor and worth the hassle and potentially the cost.

Ian buddy, Always remember what comes around ! etc..Foget the past focus on the future your conclusion is what many would do, brave to carry on repairs to Toyota though! you have plenty to focus on ....am sooooo patiantly waiting on some love to Foxanne, make Miss Hubnut happy and purchase a rare Ford perhaps! all the best from Dorset.

I'm just glad you still have the Camry 😊 It was misrepresented and you do have recourse, but in my opinion you're doing the right thing. It's easy for armchair critics to say they'd do this or that, but when it comes down to it, every action has a consequence, and in this case if you pursue the dealer you're opening up a whole new world of potential misery. Cut your losses, both financial and stress-wise, and see what can be done to fix her and (hopefully 🤞) fall in love with her and keep her on the fleet! Once sorted she will be an extremely useful and practical car!

Yep, been there myself, bought more than one Lemon, and I’ve only got myself to blame at the end of it, you’d like all sellers to tell the whole truth, but they just don’t, if it’s cheap it’s cheap for a reason, and people often forget that and just hope for the best. Hope you get the issue sorted Ian, I’ve used Radweld for a minor coolant leak on my Rover and it fixed the leak without any further issues.

You put your points across really well, it's overall a nice car and it will make great content so let's crack on!

I'm a bit of a fan of the Camry and particularly, this very model. It looks on the screen to be in great shape except for the engine issues. If it's just a change of heads and gaskets then once done, this car will be an absolute gem.

Fair point...To be fair i have just done the same ..bought a 52 plate Rover 25 knowing it needed work , the seller put a dodgy mot on it even advisory free witch i knew the car wouldn't be..Drove it home Brakes juddered exhaust was blowing...paid £495 for it scrapped it last week got £250

Yes don't by cars at night or towards end of the day.. you canr see and sometimes you hoodwink yourself. But I do so look forward to Hubnut with coffee in the morning. But the adventure is sorting out.

I must have bought my Jeep from the same dealer, blown head gasket, K-seal, chunks of metal in the autobox sump, missing wheel nut, missing caliper bolt, worn steering box, probably fake 12 month MOT. It is now all fixed, and I am hoping to be at the Motorist in it, in April. Just call it a project, and all is good! Rare cars need preservation, when there are so few left.

Sometimes you’re too far along to turn back, and at least it not suffering terminal rot which would be a worse killer. Yes, if you can track the trader down, but if you really want a Camry estate then you might have a long wait to find another.

Especially one with a 6 cylinder engine. Here in the 'states, where big engines are highly prized, ANY V6 Camry of any vintage and model is difficult to come buy. The overwhelming majority of Camrys in the U.S. are 4 cylinder powered.

Dealers who trade in small villages with proper premises tend to be trustworthy. I only buy cars from one trader. A dodgy seller shape shifts from street corner to classifieds. I got stung years ago from a franchise dealer (so called trade sale) ie no warranty. The vehicle literally fell apart on the way home. My response was to accept the lesson learned and advise the unknowing to completely avoid the shark.

It's very easy to overlook a few details when you fall in love with something and really want it. However, on the positive side, it's rare, it has amazing rear wipers, a mainly solid body and you'd struggle to find another. Plus you have contacts who can help fix it. You might even make profit if you end up selling in the future
@givenuponthisone2 жыл бұрын
Very sensible decision Ian IMO. I've been down the bumpy road of pursuing **** holes in the past, and it just sends your blood pressure up, and your health downwards. At least you've still got the car, with potential once fixed, and of course the DOUBLE rear wipers which you can marvel at every time you look at it.

The Camry is being saved... that is a win. Who knows what its fate would have been had you not snapped it up. Don’t be hard on yourself - it’s a great car and you will get it sorted.

Brilliant video Ian 👍 I bought a 2014 pug 208 in 2020 found out it had been clocked and was from a reputable dealer hot it on Finance when I confronted the finance company they said the milage only had 24000 miles on the first mot and it had done In the first 3 years 224000miles it's now on 291000 and is rubbish and they wanted me to pay to have my own engine stripped to see if it was high milage I never did and I'm stook with it in negative equity and 5 owners defo buyer beware

Sadly, those sellers exist in the marketplace, and few of them EVER come to a good end. A quality make, model, and it's still possible to get taken for a ride, so to speak. I've done something similar, however, and you're right, best to cut your losses, resolve what you can and keep moving froward.

Respect to you Hubnut for being so honest with your own self opinion. Most people have had one bad buying car experience in life,most importantly is for us all to learn by it.No doubt there's alot of people who would like to give some pay back to these dodgy dealers if they could get away with it.Hopefully Karma will step in at some point. 👍🤔

Choose your battles indeed…I’ve bought some right heaps in my time but always made the best of it….I don’t have the kind of energy it takes to put up a fight. If you even need new heads you’ll still have a reasonable priced Camry!

It's gone to the right person to sort out this lovely(apart from the coolant prob obvs) rare car. An ordinary Joe would probably have little chance of sorting it. Thanks to having a KZbin channel lovely people like Chas get envoled and I am sure with his help you will sort it 😊
@colinmoss73432 жыл бұрын
That’s a very sensible approach. You don’t need the stress of it. Might just as well put your positive energy into repairing it if that’s your choice. What about contacting a specialist breaker to see if they have a head?
@paulillingworth12422 жыл бұрын
It’s a shame Ian, as you say not worth the hassle, hope you get the Camry fixed, I bet it’s a really nice car once in good working order.
