"Horses, cattle, dogs, men. Nobody gets out of life alive." Paul Newman's greatest film; a slight edge over "The Hustler". Iconic motion pictures.

"Hud there is waiting on me, and he ain't a patient man." Has there ever been such a harsh, unloving last sentence by a dying man to his son? Yes, Hud was a terrible person, but you can tell that at some level, he wanted the love of his father. He didn't deserve it, and he knew it, but he still wanted it.

One of my favorite movies. I definitely put this one up there with Giant. Taylor Sheridan definitely watched this film, you can tell by his own shows and films. It was a modern western.

Hud does show concern for Homer. He also shows concern for Lon too. Lon doesn't understand that Homer's battle with Hud did help him to live as long as he did.

Best comment on the section! I'm baffled by the commentaries like, hud is bad guy even evil!!! Hud is imperfect, full of gray zones, like everyone of us, a human being with a bigger shadow than some. How childish we became, with the lack of nuances of marvel movies. Hud would be an independent film for Europeans festivals or art houses theatres today!

The novel was better. In the novel, the old man was tended to by Hud and his lover. In the book, the maid was black.

As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point ! You are the only person I have come across who has also read the novel ("Horseman, Pass By") this classic 60's drama was based on.

@@jubalcalif9100 Thanks for the compliment. Some great dialogue in the flick, "If you don't look out for yourself the only helping you'll get is when they lower your box in the ground. "

Can anyone recall another movie where Paul Newman plays the bad guy? I don't mean a cynical anti-hero but a really "heel" like this guy Hud.

Who doesn't know a guy just like HUD, and yea, one many think they'd be when presented on certain occasion, like their own Walter Mitty inside of them... longing to break free from rot and demoralizing corruption of the leaders of our times... yea I'd say Hud isn't a heel, he's strength against the madness that tries to bend men to their heel... God Blesses everyone and especially the Hud's of this world... God bless Viva Hud💪Yes We Can!!!

Why are some people referring to HUD as an antihero? Antiheroes ride motor cycles and tell snotty Waitresses where they can put the chicken entree. This guy was just pure evil with great blue eyes.

Yeah i love this movie and paul newman but paul newman even said it himself and he was right that he was not the best actor to pick for the role because he felt too many people would find him too likeable even after being a bastard for an hour and 30 minutes. I love his performance but something inside me says they needed someone a little meaner and a little rougher to convey the message of the movie.
@user-vh3kj9ri8h2 жыл бұрын
He wasn't pure evil. He was selfish and callous, but he clearly did love his family on some level, which can be seen in this scene. One of my favourite moments of the picture is when Hud defends his father when he tells the government officials he'll kill the longhorns later.

Hud is not evil, with perspective especially in our times Hud Personifies strength against corruption of the agencies, their agenda narrative. Hud has his faults, but Homer Bannon was a horrible father. What kind of father talks to his son that way?
