Funny enough, Frontiers' Knuckles prologue implied that Tikal and Chaos might still be around. Because of that, I like the idea/theory that they take turns with Knuckles guarding the Master Emerald so he can have some days off. TLDR: Mecha might be in for a surprise if he tries stealing the Master Emerald again...
