"Do you like Huey Lewis and The News? Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself."

Great guy, and a great segment. I met him once, when they just got their first radio hit...back in the early 80s. My friend's band opened for them in a little hole-in-the-wall bar in Wisconsin, and I was helping out my friend's band as basically a roadie. I didn't have a gig so my friend asked if I could help schlep his drums, as they weren't going to have much time to move gear after their set. So we all showed up and ended up hanging with HL & The News for the night. A nicer bunch of guys you couldn't find--and even then they were a tremendously tight band. What power. My friend and I (both drummers) were talking backstage with Bill Gibson about drum stuff, and HL walks up and joins the conversation. Just the nicest dude. Great memories, and from my experience the guy we see in this video was absolutely the guy that I remember.

@@miketomlin6040 Can't you say that about a lot of 80's bands that were say, just popular mainly in the 80's? Obviously you wouldn't put say U2 or Madonna or whom ever in that category because they had the same success as Sports but spread out sporadically over a longer period of time. I still say in terms of chart/radio hits, sales, and musical impact, Sports would be a top 10 album of the 80's. I am not sure where you live but in any creditable music store where I live, Huey Lewis is there, Like I said, I am talking 80's.
