In this episode of the Portugal series, we travel to a remote forgotten village. High up in the village there we found a forgotten abandoned mansion. The place was build in 1888 by a very traditional religious Portugees family. The mansion passed from father to son and eventually landed in the last generation. This Sun was a musician and he composed classical music. In 1970 he got into a nasty divorce with his wife, he cheated on her and took all the children with her. He lived in this place alone until 1980 when he decided to leave it behind as well. It was just too huge for him and he had nobody to share it with. Until this day the places stay abandoned and there is nobody to care for it. Join us on an incredible adventure!

Jordy's camera work is very good. Also, the room with all the chests, I have to wonder if they were not Hope Chests. This is something that used to be done where a girl child would save linens and other items she would need to start her own household one day. I have even done one for my daughter, who is 23 and is moving out this weekend. :) - :(

The woman’s drawings are patterns for embroidering table runners and linens etc. I love Portugal, and find it so sad that as this lifestyle passes out of being realistic...the remnants are left this way to fade away as if they never were. So much beautiful antique furniture just left behind...so sad. I could enjoy spending the rest of my years trying to preserve these silent observers of human life. The woman was not into tattoo. These were embroidery iron on patterns you then put needle and thread to for different things. Pillow cases. Dish towels. Blouses. Very beautiful things when done.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries little girls were given "hope chests". Just like the one's seen at the beginning of this video. The parents would buy each girl one of them to store photos, letters, fabric, and items from life to take with them when they were married. That is why most of the chests were made from cedar so as to keep the cridders out. Once the girls were married, they would store the wedding dress and memorabilia like ribbons in the chest. Each of my great aunts had one. Only one aunt kept her wedding dress in hers.

In a big formal mansion, there would be a cloak room, that their guests would leave their coats with the servants and the servant would give them a tag that corresponded to the tag on the hanger. This would happen at big formal gatherings or large dinners. You have to take into consideration that there were probably 30 or so family members and servants that all lived there and they would have a lot of guests and it would be hard for a servant to remember who’s coat went to who. That ante room is like a gathering room where people would have drinks or chat in between times that they were dining. I would imagine the actual dining room would have a very large table and a lot of chairs. There are a lot of great antiques there that I would love to have and restore, so sad that they are just sitting there decaying. I love that secretary desk that you opened up, I would take that in a minute. I think that was not a piano, I think it was a harpsichord. There’s so much beautiful Portuguese tile everywhere, I love tile and would love to see that place either get restored or stripped for its antiquities so they can be recycled, there’s just no reason to let them just rot away. In those benches you would store the cushions and pillows. The chapel was just gorgeous and very common to have in a mansion of that period. The plaster ceiling was so nice. The blue cabinet room was not the kitchen, it was probably the butlers pantry or the scullery. The kitchen would have had a very huge fireplace and ovens and work tables, but that blue cupboard room was not big enough to be the actual kitchen. I think those drawings were stencils for doing embroidery. I’m sure there were a lot of rooms you did not explore.

Damn, it's a grand house: just look at those velvet pelmets above the doors, the azulejos, and the furniture. It's almost madness to have left it... Needs a bit of fixing up, but it would be a pleasure to move in it, as long as the vibes are good. You guys tell me . Cheers, to you both, Jordy and Jaimy ! PS: you are quite right about this beautiful piano. They are called, I think upright "Lyre Pianos", and are very rare, especially this one, which still has its action still more or less playing. This piano would be the pride of a museum, where it belongs, and is well worth restoring to a level of perfect playing: a great rarity, indeed.

Actually, most of the things are gone. There is mostly only furniture left, and not too many of them either, which is probably just too difficult to move.

This was a beautiful home and very large. The desk is called a secretary and was a staple of homes as early as the 1500's in England and other countries. The term "Grand Piano" is used for a specific type of piano not the standard upright. The piano in the tall cabinet was very unique. The paper with artwork shown at the end was for embroidery or needlework. Stay safe and have fun.

I remember my Grandmother had those types of drawings. They were used as transfers for embroidery. They were ironed on to fabric and the tissue would be removed leaving a pattern could be easily followed.

The tall piano is a British upright cabinet grand. Strout I think. Its a grand pianoforte in vertical form. Also part of the "Giraffe" piano family of upright grands. Probably from around 1810 - 1815. Mostly the Established date is on the company named of the pianos. That piano is part of keyboard history, can be found in museums, music history books. Would love to have that, too bad its too far away and just left.

I found this video especially interesting as my husband has an ancestor from Portugal. They left there to come to the USA in the 1700's but still this is where that family branch came from. Absolutely loved the money desk and the grand piano! Those could both be restored with little problems! Thank you for a glimpse of the world I'd never get to see otherwise.

i would love to know why they leave these beautiful properties to rot and decay. Aw such a sad story and now its abandoned .. so sad. When people pass away their lives are never the same .. as my uncles died and some aunties my grand parents all gone ,y mum with Alzheimer's my dad gone i don't have many family left who want to bother with me because most of them gone they don't want to know anymore. We were real close when they were here but not now things are not the same but that's life it can hurt but you have to make the most of it .. The picture on the bedroom wall is a sketch i know because i sketch portraits with pencils and you rub it to blend your pencils and make all sorts of textures on the drawing. Hi Lesley & Danny, What a wonderful looking mansion, with so much history like the blue glass tiles in rooms & furniture & chandeliers, servant quarters & homeowner`s rooms! To still see a house from 1888 anywhere is unique but to see a Portuguese one, somewhere I have never seen. It is sad the children when they grew up didn`t come to this mansion & at least take pictures & the furniture before it decays beyond repair! Thanks so much for showing us everything & for Danny to tell you certain things about it! When you said Piano, I had never seen one like that ever, but reading comments & find out it`s a Harpsichord...but never seen that before either! Shame about the story of Musician Husband & wife finds out he cheated on her & she leaves 1970 & takes the children, & then he stays till 1980 & then he is too lonely to stay & leaves the mansion! The chair in a bedroom serves many purposes. Someone can read you a bedtime story or sit and have a conversation. The chair in the room is also a place where you could sit down and put on your shoes in the morning or take them off at night :) By the way, my mom was from Lisbon Portugal and what a beautiful country.

These glass oil jars are for oil heaters. when the oil ran out they were refilled and placed in the heater upside down and the oil dripped through the needle and filtered into a circular wick with a wire mesh on the top and it went red glow. We had these heaters in out primary school many years ago. Always remember the teacher replacing the oil jars...memories, ....Mervyn

Hi Lesley and Jordy, Bros of Decay, and Danny, I loved your introduction as an off-comment combined with beautiful drone shots of this huge abandoned mansion of a Portugese musician. Somehow the story of the last owner of this location, who was divorced from his wife, was actually quite sad to hear. - There were beautiful details in some of the rooms to see. - I liked this piano like instrument with the vertical string case. - This is a vertical harpsichord, called "Clavicytherium". - During my last visit in Brussels I could see such an instrument in this amazing museum of music instruments, located in a breathtaking art nouveau building. Although your buddy Danny tried to play, it was not working, because an instrument like this one, has to be tuned regularly. - The three persons on the picture you were showing, are three famous composers of the 18th/9th century (L.v.Beethoven, F. Hello Lesley, Jordy and Danny! Very decayed house but in the same time interesting place . Many of the wood furniture unique . The tile in the wall and bathroom is beautiful.
