The Amtrak Hiawatha is a train that runs between Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI seven round trips daily, excluding Sunday which is 6 round trips. It gets its name from the Milwaukee Roads famous Hiawatha passenger trains that ran all around Northern Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and more. Today the only other Amtrak trains that go into Wisconsin are the Empire Builder Trains, which get their name from the Great Northern Railway. Hiawathas today stop also in Glenview, IL, Sturtevant, WI, and Milwaukee Airport.
Amtrak P42, P40, and Dash8-32BWH (referred to by some as P32, which can get mixed up with P32AC-DM locomotives numbered as 7**, which can be confusing) are seen powering this train. The Hiawatha also has a NPCU (Non Powered Control Unit) at the other end, which is used when the train is pushed inbound towards Chicago, like Metra commuter trains. The NPCUs were originally Amtrak F40PHs, which at one time were the main fleet of locomotives that Amtrak used. NPCUs have no traction motors, and no engine, the inside is designed to be used for baggage. They are cab and baggage cars, so some tend to refer to them as Cabbage Cars (like the plant). The original F40PH number is the last 3 digits. For example 90200 was Amtrak 200, "90" was added making it now a NPCU. 90200 is the first Amtrak F40PH, it is a class unit.
In this compilation these are the locomotives that are seen. Numbers are not in order.
Amtrak P42s: #16, #25, #38, #55, #66 Phase 2 Heritage unit, #93, #98, #126, #136, #138, & #155.
Amtrak P40s: #815, #816, #837
Amtrak NPCUs: #90200, #90221, #90413, #90368 with original Phase 3 paint, and #406 Phase 3 Heritage unit.
Dash8-32BWH: #517
Note: I have seen many more different Amtrak locomotives on the Hiawatha before. Some to note: Amtrak #1 the first P42, #207 the last P42, other heritage units and more #s & different locomotives in a big list have appeared on the Hiawatha before.
