I would save seeds from the longest one. Grow bags seem to do the best for carrots but always seems to have a little extra depth space unused. Width can always be fixed by planting more. Great harvest. Thanks for the share!

Good Morning Jim - Thanks for the carrot harvest update as I'm glad to see someone can get a hefty crop. I have not had much success growing carrots in grow bags after trying several different varieties but will try the St Valery variety next year and see how they do in my area. Gardening in small spaces requires sizable production or it is just a plant taking up space. Hope you have a wonderful weekend and take care..
@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
It’s true that in small spaces you need to make the most of every square inch! St. Valery is a good tasting carrot too. I'm looking forward to growing some again next year. Have a great weekend!

I go through stages of eating one thing way too much for a while, and at the moment, that's carrots, so this video came out at the perfect/worst time to make me crave some good honey-roasted carrots. They look fantastic, especially the thicker ones at the start--though the thinner ones looked fantastic too (and perfect for just washing, roasting and eating)! Not sure which I'd want though--the thinner ones must be simpler to prepare (the aforementioned wash/roast/eat) but the thicker ones would have a nicer crunch I'd feel.

Jim, that's quite a nice carrot harvest. 🥕🥕🥕 I would save seeds from the ones you are regrowing for seed production. I will definitely plant my carrots in grow bags next gardening season. The carrot harvest from one of my Greenstock towers was nothing to write home about. I hope you and Mrs. Midwest Gardener have a pleasant weekend. ~Margie🤗

That's an amazing harvest. Let us know what the weight was next week. The insect damage I think you are describing is a wireworm. They drill a hole in tuber crops. It's slender, orange yellow colored with antenna looking things on its head. They are very quick to rebury themselves if they are unearthed. I put them in the container that goes to the yard waste. I don't like to kill just creatures if I can relocate them. Enjoy all your delicious carrots. Take care and have a great weekend.
@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
Thanks! I didn't get them weighed until after I edited the video. Once I but the tops off of them, they only weighed a little over 6 pounds. I guess that isn't too bad for carrots though. I'll have to keep my eye out for those wire worms. Have a great weekend!
@shirleyk6233 ай бұрын
@@MidwestGardener that's awesome. I found that I have gotten good results from grow bags with my carrots versus in the ground 😄

Morning Jim. I have to ask: What is your inspiration to grow? If you had 3 ingredients to make compost, what would they be? Do you think a garden can be sustained with "in house" materials broken down to create soil? What is your greatest garden fail? What is your easiest plant to grow? Thank you for all your videos. They are very much appreciated.
@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
That is a great set of questions. I don't have time to get to all of them, but I think my parents and grandparents inspired me to grow things. I remember being in the garden with my grandparents as a small boy. I also really enjoy watching a seed grow into full grown a plant.

When you initially fertilized the grow bag mix, what did you use? That is an amazing harvest from a 10 gallon growbag!
@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
I use a granular 10-10-10 fertilizer when I plant, because I mix new soil with old. I was very surprised by how well they did. I have more seeds to plant next year while I wait for the new ones.
@keyphabenyisrael32193 ай бұрын
@@MidwestGardener I caught some 10lb bags of 10-10-10 on clearance at Walmart for $1 each back 2021. I haven't used any yet, but now I have an experiment for Spring 2025, thanks!
@drutter3 ай бұрын
Did you get any worms? We get cutworms here (click beetle larva), which are long orange tube-shaped things. They like potatoes too. I hear they live under grass, and tend to go away after a year or two of the ground being cleared. So maybe I won't see as many next year. But I still got a lot of good carrots. We had very dry weather all year, then nonstop rain the past 6 weeks. I pulled out all 3 rows yesterday. I replanted a few of the small ones, and wormy ones, hoping they will take before the frost, and give me seeds next year. Do you think that might work? I guess I'll find out! All the best and thanks for the video.
@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
We did get some kind of insect damage on 3 or 4 of them. Not sure exactly what it was though. I think the replanting is worth a try. I would say that it has a good chance of working for you. Good luck with it!

@MidwestGardener3 ай бұрын
Great to hear about the flower! If you leave a carrot in the ground over the winter, it will produce flowers the next year. The flowers will form seeds. I let the seed heads dry out on the plant, then I save the seeds from them.
