Love the fact you've used Sturmey gears, a much more elegant solution. Really envious, that's such a good build and it must be a hoot to ride around on. Excellent stuff.

It is a lot of fun on the empty flat back roads around here. I've got other hubs with more gears, sturmey and Shimano but my faith in the robustness of the mighty AW has yet to be tested.

Whenever I go to the Morgan factory for a cup of coffee I see the Morgan (Pashley) bicycles in the shop - they look fantastic and retro and beautiful - they have hub gears which I guess are Shimano, and hub brakes I think. They aren't cheap - definitely not the sort of money I'd spend on a bike, and theoretically I could get an old steel frame bike and make something with a similar vibe myself. I actually bought a Raleigh Record Sprint for that very job, but it was so nice I just restored it back to it's original condition (must re spoke the wheels sometime, they're a bit sloppy at the mo).
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90068 ай бұрын
@@GrumpyTim pashley make beautiful bikes and trikes. I think that was the right move with the Raleigh, geometry is all about speed. I've been getting bikes through my brother's work, they refurb and sell second hand bikes but either scrap or bulk sell the less desirable bikes, similar operations all over the country, if you had one locally you'd end up with 50 perfect bikes in no time! I now have the trifecta of the last Birmingham built Dawes, heavy tourer, light tourer and road, they're heavenly, I doubt a pashley feels any nicer under you even if they are nicer to look at. He got a gaggle of 70's folders and shoppers for my kids too, chrome luggage racks and of course 3spds, they would have gone for scrap. Maybe you need an old post bike?
@GrumpyTim8 ай бұрын
I have a bit of a soft spot for the old 70s folders and shoppers, they have a really great look, and they should work fine so long as you don't go over any jumps or stuff like that. I did consider getting an old post bike at one time, but I figured I didn't really need it. Seeing your video has got me thinking about getting something with Sturmey gears, bizarrely I don't have any at the moment, and that just won't do.

Now that's what I call a conversation starter. Great work as always James. Cargo bikes are so much money! Definitely worth the time to build. The whole babboe cargo bike scandal still echos in my mind. You did the right thing beefing it all up.

Read your comment and went down a fractured frame rabbit hole, they obviously tried making a quality product to begin with but at some point decided to bury their heads in the sand. What a shame.

My mistake with mk1 was thinking of it like a bicycle and not anticipating the torsional loads on the frame and lateral loads on the wheelchair wheels, I also neglected to consider hills living somewhere as flat as I do.

That's a great machine. Why did you put the shackles on the front? They're usually on the back. You almost need a brake booster - which not practical due to no electricity or vacuum. Did I hear right that you have 6 kids ? crikey !!
@turboconqueringmegaeagle90068 ай бұрын
There was a reason, f*cked if I can remember though mate. The braking effort isn't what I'm struggling with, friction in the cable and finding where to put a return spring and I think the cables are ugly, if I did something with rods and brass bits it'll look puka even if it still doesn't stop

Yes! Bought some fields in Cornwall and an international 474, it’s great. Been thinking of you as I’m trying to fix it up, I am a bit of a beginner mechanic! It the tractor starts and runs the topper so I’m happy. Although the battery came wired up as posative earth (not what it should be) so all the electrics are fried but the starter motor seems to work wired up the wrong way round! Looking forward to a lifetime project of keeping the tractor running. Glad to see you back, the cargo bike is lush. S
