Games that have restaurantes and apartments without toilets annoy me, it's petty, I know. In Destiny 1 & 2 the games you travel across earth, space stations and derelict cities on mars and venus etc. and not one toilet! they eat, there are restaurantes there is even a robot that loves noodles and no one has ever pooped. I don't question the gun totting space wizards in the game just the lack of toilets, it irks me.

forspoken has a few classic isekai tropes; 1. parents are involved in the fantasy world; usually kings or queens 2. starts out with legendary object and/or is somehow the magical exception to the norm 3. death of mildly relevant character results in MC gaining motivation to kill the dark lord 4. completely hops, and/or never even thinks about, the language barrier, with bullshit logic nobody explains 5. kills off about 1 character the entire time, usually at the start 6. set in not-rome medieval rome. 7. protagonist (usually from modern day society) uses lots of cool hip slang like the kids do, and the world's natives dont understand its weird that forspoken wasn't a book. it'd probably be BETTER as a book.

Currently living in Oxford. A lot of the conversation is purely on travel, trying to reduce car emissions by encouraging a closer network of wants and needs. Oxford as a city is very anti-car, with the high street only having buses and taxis on it. We all received these anti-15 minute city pamphlets through our doors but all the concerns were vastly irrelevant to what Nerd City was concerned about. It was terrible. All the opposition was like: "Oh no, it's gonna take ages to take your kids to the park, wasting valuable time and you'll end up not even bothering and your kids will be soooo upset". Like what? Is that all you've got? I think this is telling that either this pamphlet was just so ignorant, or that Nerd's issues with the system aren't actually where the idea of 15 minute cities is heading, focusing less on segregated city areas and more on encouraging less car use. Either way, being a student who walks everywhere in the city to get to shops, lectures, pubs, nightclubs etc, it doesn't really affect me so maybe my understanding of it isn't at all in the right ballpark...

The whole 15 minute city concept is misunderstood here, it's about not needing a car to get from a suburb where there's literally nothing, no stores, no entertainment, only housing without even a fucking bus stop because it's highly inefficient, to anywhere, it's very inefficient american suburbs that are the worst offenders in this case, but it's not only americans that need changing. The biggest downside to car focused cities is just how much space we dedicate to it. We build massive multilane roads, sure... but just how much space do we dedicate to parking as well. The big benefit behind enabling people to shop within walking/transit distance is that then you can reduce parking areas freeing up space to be used for more buildings. Someone did the math, I think it was strongtowns, but if you take a Walmart and its parking lot and convert that to a block of housing with some supermarkets and small local shops you can not only serve more people than that walmart but you can also house hundreds of people in the same space. But if we're focusing on space, suburbs are the main cause. People live away from their work and their shopping which means they have no choice to drive which means we need giant block stores and parking lots to serve them, Surburbia was really big in the post war which coincided with the construction boom that established the cities we know today. Its also expensive AF to maintain, the infrastructure required for a 1 family home costs more than the city will make from them in property tax and licenses. Having half your property be lawn (average bylaw in suburbs) means the town needs to pay for double the infrastructure, you cannot expand your home if your family should grow, and contributes to the housing crises because cities cannot legally be more dense, only more wide. Its bad for the home owner, the renter, the city, and nature. Why do we do this? Its literally illegal in the US and Canada to do much else, zoning laws are often used to make pretty cities, not livable ones. The people making the zoning laws are overwhelmingly people who don't need to consider how convenient and cheap shopping is (young or broke people don't attend municipal meetings which they really should, your city has more impact on your life than your country, often enough!).
@christophernoneya4635 Жыл бұрын
tl;dr instead of targeting individuals to combat the inaccessibility of cities, you need to target infrastructure, laws, and construction. You shouldn't be punishing individuals because this isn't an individual problem, its a problem of statistics that is the city's job to change... not the average driver

@christophernoneya4635 Жыл бұрын
@@nxxynx5039 i think "car free" especially in america is an unreasonable goal, but i think "cars optional" should be the goal. More often than not it feels hostile to walk anywhere. No protection from the elements (say trees providing shade, rain, and wind cover for example) on the sidewalk, few crosswalks and inconvenient/terrifying places to cross as intersections, long distances from where you start and the nearest service you need, few busroutes resulting in long walks to catch a bus to another long walk, etc. I dont think we should be punishing car ownership like buffalo tried, but i do think we should try to make life easier for those who dont have a car. I think if you made it easier to live without a car in big cities less people would waste money on a car they dont want and it would remove traffic for those who want to drive

35:53 Nerd is spot-on, the scary part is that it sounds an awful lot like Hunger Games, barely anyone is questioning it and even worse it's already happening right now. E.g. Egypt's new administrative capital which is being built in the desert about 50 km away from Cairo, supposedly to "relieve congestion" as the population is expected to increase, especially in the "less privileged areas of the city" (a.k.a. slums); at the same time the government are "helping" some of these people by moving them to social housing in isolated districts far from the city center. Keep in mind the uprising against Mubarak's regime started with unrest in the slums near the city center that led people to protest in front of the parliament and overthrow the government. Now instead there's only one road connecting the new capital to Cairo, a road in the middle of the desert with multiple checkpoints managed by the military. I have a hunch that it's been designed so that traversing it by foot would be a bit inconvenient...

No one who wants walkable cities wants what's happening in egypt lmao I think the biggest hole in this whole 'walkable cities will mean you can't escaaaaape' idea is that decentralized suburban living is also easily controlled. If you can't go anywhere without driving, what do you do if the government is like "okay we're starting to kill everyone for our nebulous reasons, the gas pumps are all gone, no more fuel for you"? In practical terms, you can look at places undergoing civil wars like Syria, people outside the cities are easily swept up by military forces and within the cities fighting is hard and constant None of this is me saying that the current schema in place for 15 minute cities are practical or good though, fine-based incentives are pretty silly. I mean the root cause of people being spread out of cities and the advent of the suburb is lobbying by the automotive industry like Ford, you have to instead invest in better public transportation and make cities worth visiting

Governments love sneaking shit into things that are meant to seem good, it's happened a lot in the U.S Government and probably others as well, specifically sneaking things into bills that are being passed.
