Production worker here. Yeah any produced event is expensive as shit. First take every worker- camera team, audio team, floor managers, PAs, PMs, control room (switcher, director, graphics,etc). a head count of 20 people is considered a small event. Let’s talk a call sheet of maybe 40+ people, usually that’s how big an average TV callsheet is, not including talent. Now each of those people need to be paid a wage, obviously different from department to department. But the minimum daily pay for an 8-12 hour shoot is $200 (PA pay) and can go up to $500-$1500 in the higher rates. Now you have to pay for the gear; cameras, mics, lights, stands, sand bags, appleboxes. Usually rented or come bundled in with a workers rate (like some audio guys will charge more but bring their own gear). Furniture, Set pieces, custom pieces with logos. You have to pay for the space you’re in and storage for things you can’t keep in the venue between shoots or outside of your time there. After 6 hours, you have to feed everyone. More food after 12 hours. Travel and hotels for talent and priority crew. Clean up crew. This is just some of what one day of production costs. I think a lot people don’t consider just how much goes into everything they consume. It takes a village to go from live streaming in your room to doing a game show for even a single day. And the village doesn’t show up for free.
