My friend called me and said he had 40 Aluminum horse shoes to get rid of , He said I should melt them down into 1 big block so I thought why not . I melted them down into smaller ingots then got 2 furnaces going to make sure they were all molten when I tried out my new Mold. The biggest bar I've made but definitely not the heaviest . An awesome big mold but less than half the size of my biggest mold which I haven't tried yet . Now as usual sit back relax and enjoy todays video my friends.

HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it.

I would suggest - no, actually CONFIRM, - that you were not alone. I, ahem, also experienced a frisson of unexpected delight upon espying the second, unmentioned new mold. I, too, live in a state of suspended excitement for the day that that new item of equipment is unveiled to us all. A joyous day indeed awaits us all I suspect. Roll on. Roll on!

Interesting. I didn't even know horseshoes were made from aluminum. I've always seen 'em made out of steel so I was confused when this vid first began. But I did a quick google search and, I'll be darned, they do have aluminum shoes. Apparently they're more appropriate for less impact/lighter worked horses so like show horses and the like. Trail horses, ones that work on asphalt, etc need the heavier steel.

I’m glad you said it, you saved me a job. I remember watching the village blacksmith after school when I was a kid, he often shoed horses. I’m really not that old, this was in the 80s & the old forge closed down soon after. Probably one of the last in the area. Most farriers round here are mobile these days.

How about casting something you use all the time? A nice bottle opener. You will probably need to use aluminium bronze to get the strength for the device. I love seeing the pre-processing. I thought you would take out the nails first, but you surprised me by not. Keep up the good work, I look forward to your videos each week.

Doing a custom 3D printed stackable "lego" block to sandcast a mold out of would be pretty neat. There's a variety of blocks, so you could decide what might be the most interesting size ones, but I'd think that 1x2 and 2x4 bricks would be pretty cool. And then over time with different materials cast with them, you could stack them and build something out of it in your hoard! It'd make for BigStackindeeD!

Just a tip, you better inspect primers and deprime thoses shell casings prior to a melt. You dont want any unexpected pops/bangs when you melt them down edit: Visually inspect them for any light strikes, because someone could have a light strike thinking it was a bad round, and just pull the bullet and dump the powder; then placed it in the brass bin. This has happened to me after policing brass at a range for reloading, and well I had an unexpected pop when I was depriming.

Would love to see another huge engine melt like the one you did a few months back, before you hit your one ton goal. And also, would love to see more bars from this mold, and the even bigger one you teased in the video. Maybe a Nordic gold shiny bar? Also, is it close enough to your goal to melt all the slag, powder, and extra castings to make the final push to the end? And, you gotta do all the raw stuff you have in your garage, like the brass bullet casings, etc. And, one last thing, when you hit your goal, would love to see a list, in the video or your pinned comment, of all the castings, and their values, along with a final tally of total value.

Aluminum is a cheaper option for shoeing horses. Shoes are usually made out of iron. They're heated up to a glow to hammer them out on an anvil to better fit the shape of the horse's hoof. After being nailed in, the farrier will file the fronts to flush them up to the hoof wall. The leather inserts you found nailed in are for horses that had a bad sole, either from puncture or abrasion that the shoe didn't lift high enough to avoid. The foreign object gets embedded in the frog of the hoof, and the insert pad is there to prevent further damage and allow the sole of the hoof to build back integrity and strength.

Guess they weren't enough challenge. Interestingly enough, those big dogs were sissies really, the all ended up tucking their tails and cowering behind their humans.

Still would love to see you mould a mould of a mould, then mould a mould in that mould. Been a hot minute since we saw a cast iron melt. Love the big brick, top stuff.
