Everyone seemed to miss this between Remake and Rebirth regarding timelines. This also for me, explains Aerith's "Death". Remember in Remake just after the motorcycle battle, you come upon a wall of whispers with a tunnel of light. Through that threshold is a new world (or timeline). Everyone crosses the threshold and continue in a different timeline. In Rebirth at the Forgotten Capital, only Cloud manages to cross the threshold, the others had to keep it open for him. In that timeline, Cloud blocks Sephiroth's sword, allegedly saving Aerith, then the wall of whispers falls, allowing the rest of the party to enter. When the whispers disappear, the timeline that Cloud entered is no longer there, the party will instead encounter their present timeline. Cloud saves Aerith in the threshold. When the threshold disappears, it switches, and Aerith is dead in that timeline, where the rest of the party ends up. Sephiroth mentions of merging timelines. What I think is happening, is Cloud knows he saved Aerith, but since only Cloud went through the threshold, those two timelines merged somehow (where Aerith is saved and not saved). This is why only Cloud can see Aerith. This is also why Cloud can only see the tear in the sky in the end cutscene. Cloud is simultaneously in two timelines that have merged.

I mean I don’t think anyone’s missed it, people just don’t like the idea of multiverses and timelines, so they try to disregard it one way or another. It’s been a large point of contention even for people that enjoy the games. But to your point, it’s possible that bleed over of worlds has been happening for a while.

Im a huge fan of the first and have been playing it every year since it came out and even I want a happy ending this time. I’m hoping what this trilogy turns out to be is a sequel to the original and not an actual remake with the same beats, and Aeriths fate hinges on this; if she’s dead it’s a remake, if she survives it’s a sequel. It would also make sense to the overarching thematic essence to FF7 with is ‘the lifestream’ and how it represents the CYCLE of life and death, not just death like a lot of ppl think. Things die, return to the planet, then through the lifestream give life again; for Aerith she dies in the original, returns to the planet, then is given life again in this remake timeline. To me that’s poetic and the right thing to do this time for the story imo Thanks for shedding light on the ultimania stuff!

They did the OG FFVII justice with Rebirth. I love the story, the gameplay, the combat systems, the voice acting is outstanding, graphics are phenomenal, & the modifications to the story are nothing short but welcoming. The execution by game developers was amazing job tor this game given its shortened timeframe.

yeah i hated aeriths death on the OG ff7, its senseless i think the lifestream would have been ok even if she didnt die, and if she was next to cloud she would have still saved cloud.

Heres my interpretation. Cloud saved Aerith, and by defying the white and black whispers created a new timeline (possibly a "supreme" timeline as its against the will of the white and black lifestream), but in the other timeline she died. This is huge though guys... Tifa also saw Aerith alive and dead.... not just Cloud. Also we fight Jenova and Sephiroth as 2 different Clouds. The first is from the group that just saw Aerith die, and the one alone is from the timeline where he saved her. This makes Zacks line to save her make sense, AND why Aerith said, "I saw what you did back there, Cloud. Thank you." We are just now in the timeline where she died.

Cloud saved aerith after going threw the white gate. He saved her spirit from being killed but I think every aerith is dead. She exists now only in the lifestream

ROYGBIV, 7 colors of the rainbow that together makes white light. Each world is one of those colors, in part 3, we get all 7 merging to create the white light needed to save the world. I do think Aerith in one world was saved but we will not see her with the main party until maybe near the end of the 3rd game, when the 7 worlds merge.

So i went back to watch AC Complete and went to listen the novel On a Way to a Smile case: Lifestream (telling what happened between the time after OG7 and AC) after finishing rebirth. It does mention that Aerith and Sephiroth IS in the lifestream. So i guess the black and white whisper kinda does indicate the corruption and purification of the lifestream.

30 year FF fan here! I really appreciate the news update! Confirmed all my theories about the ending. Sorry I don’t agree with your opinions about the game, but like you said, to each their own. I completely agree and am onboard with what the developers are doing and am super excited to play the final part for FFVII’s 30th anniversary. It’s going to be a banger!

I think Zack is now in our timeline and or world. Like it said. Zack fought alongside of cloud when the two was merged. But when they started separate again his wold was being destroyed by meteor. So he got kicked back into ours (by Areith, hence the rainbow) just before the two world completely separated.

I see Clouds headaches like Sam Winchester "scratching the wall" in Supernatural. We didnt see the Aerith burial because Cloud refuses to accept that it happened. We've never seen Sephiorth. Only black robed men. Sephiorth is in the crater where hea been since Cloud dumped him in the lifesteam and hes controlling all black robes in all worlds at the same time because Sephiorth is one Sephiorth. Every version of him was thrown in the lifestream. Hes of one mind.

Based off the worlds bleeding together my guess is Aerith is trapped in a dying world preventing her from using holy which is trapped there with her. Third game might see us bleed them together to stop meteor

As we talked about in our previous Podcast episode; Final Fantasy’s best endings are almost always bittersweet endings. Changing things to give everyone a happy ending is kinda dumb, but it could also be really powerful if they do it right

It honestly just depends, but I’ve never really seen the way 7’s universe works allowing for a happy ending. It kinda removes the impact if there’s a “happy ending”. But I’ll reserve judgment until we see it.

I disagree and would argue it doesn’t have as much to do with happy endings and rather connecting story arcs and exploring different themes. Aerith in OG really wasn’t all that interesting because she never really had any growth as a character and really was used as a plot device to drive the story forward. It made sense from a narrative perspective to get that final cutscene but that’s really all she was because she was killed off halfway through. Now we have an opportunity to explore her character more and see what kind of potential she really has which to me is exciting. If everyone had survived in the OG then it would actually be more interesting to see what would happen if someone important died, the shoe would be on the other foot. If they’re using the ‘multiverse’ to direct this story in a sequel type direction it makes more sense to explore different things, but then there’s ppl that just wanted a faithful remake and I understand that too, but then there’s a lot of us that didn’t want that either. It was always going to be a double edge sword coming back to this world lol, success sometimes breeds controversy.

@@dukey03haha, I mean I can tell you for a fact that I actually wasn’t interested when the project was first announced until I starting seeing things in the promotional material that weren’t in the original game, and I’m saying that as someone who’s loved the OG since it first came out. There’s a lot of ppl like myself who would rather they do something off the rails than play it safe and do the same surface level thing. Entertainment is always subjective though so to each their own. To address your sales claim I would point out that the PS5 has 1/3 the install base to that of the ps4. Part 1 remake, GOW, and resident evil remakes all have had the ps4’s larger audience to fall back on. If you adjust for the different ratios of players on each system it actually does make sense that the sales numbers are what they are. The director for rebirth also just got promoted at Square enix to my understanding and I don’t think if Rebirth was a total flop that would have been likely.

I think to explain the whole Zack being able to create worlds through his choices. He technically should not exist at this point. So the world having a Zack thats alive is an anomaly and anything he does creates a new ripple affect.

Not gonna lie, that genesis passage really heightens the elements of ff7 quite well. Though having aerith being saved for cloud but not the others of the party is less of a tragedy, it still follows in the vein of the original that aerith was indeed still watching over them and the planet in her death. Current theory, since Sephiroth can exist in all the worlds maybe Sephiroth can allow others to do the same? If Cloud exists in both worlds at the same time then he can deliver sephiroth the black materia and without the rage from seeing Aerith die, it may prevent him from finding himself and becoming his own stable person which ultimately makes sephiroth more likely to succeed this time. Whatever, we'll see. I'm witholding judgement until I see part 3. As for future games, it's never over until they account for Jenova infecting the lifestream. All of the shit that came after OG (from Advent Children onward) was a direct result of the lifestream continuing to be infected with Jenova. As for a happy ending, I don't think it has to be sunshine and roses but seeing everyone that survives move on and settle down would be nice. Trauma is a huge theme in FF7 (pretty much every character has some that has left them scarred) and if you follow the story and everything that comes after that trauma is never really resolved, they never find inner peace. They just get more and more traumatized. Their reward for stopping Sephiroth is the lifestream infecting the planet and making people sick and ultimately allowing Sephiroth to be reborn. A message of trauma is never ending, unrecoverable, and things are going to continue to get worse isn't something very palatable to me these days. A message of enduring trauma is hard but you can find a new peace and new normal with enough time and effort would be nice.

I feel like a lot of players dont like the end because they either dont understand it or their questions weren't answered. Mind you, I didn't fully understand it, and i still had questions but I know that theres another game coming out to answer those questions, so i didnt treat it like the end of the game. More like the end of disk 2. I give them more credit than assuming they fumbled at the 1yd line. But thats just me... Not showing Cloud laying Aerith in the water wasn't a missed opportunity. Why would that happen when she's "not dead" (to him)? If we're playing as cloud, the only things we get to see are from his perspective. His messed up head wont acknowledge having laid her to rest because he doesn't think she's dead. We know he wasn't in Nibelheim as a SOLDIER, but we played as him. Cloud's head-canon pushes out all contradictions. Id bet money that we'll see a flashback of him laying her in the water when his mind finally breaks.

Thanks for the update! And one theory I haven't seen out yet but it's an idea I got while playing. What if the white andd black materia are responsible for the new worlds? We see Zack has Aerith's ribbon on his hand. What if it symbolizes that he took also her white materia? Maybe that is how he is able to hop through different worlds or even create new ones. This would tie with Remake where Aerith used the white materia (maybe) to open the portal. Cloud could be sent to another dimension via the new white materia he got and maybe thanks to the empty one too? Just ideas of course!

@@Soldier1stClass I agree Rebirth introduced the multiverse but my interpretation of the ending where we see the multiple “black holes” merging and hear the explanation of Sephiroth was also that the Reunion of worlds already happened right there at the end of the game. That “could” signify that the multiverse is already solved and that in part 3 we will have the merged timelines universe where our party (and Zack) is + the lifestream versions of Aerith and Sephiroth, bringing everything back to a similar situation like start of Remake/end of OG. This is what I hope for so the multiverse will not be a “problem” to deal with anymore. But again, just my interpretation, it might be completely wrong!

People don’t want to believe multiverses are real because they assume that if they did, that it would be a bad thing. I can’t tell you how many people harassed me over the course of the first year after Remake launched. I said there was a multiverse/timelines since seeing the end of Remake, and everyone told me I was hating on the game because of it. That if they really did use Multiverses, that it would mess up the series and they’d hate it. So people are using everything they can to deny it’s real.

I think i remember aerith telling Zach in Crisis Core that she doesn't like the sky. At first i thought maybe she was referring to the plate above the slums but after Cloud and only cloud saw the sky in the end i font even know anymore. Like what if she was always connected to other worlds. As for other stories they could tell the story about the mobile phone only game about the Turks. I think i remember being glued to my phone hearing a recap on it a few years back. It was really interesting.

This was actually super insightful... Gives me some ideas for how badly I've wrestled with Rebirth's ending. To be fair, I liked it, but trying to make heads or tails of it has been challenging. The only ideas I can think of at the moment are: --Less likely, Cloud did save Aerith, but it was some other dimension's Aerith who could communicate to him cross-dimensionally, and Rebirth Aerith did indeed die --Possibly, Cloud saved Aerith, and it created a fracture in Rebith's timeline where she did survive, hence the crack in the sky that Cloud sees --More likely, this is just a manifestation of Jenova who is well known to have influence over Cloud, and able to take the shape of dead loved ones

Didn't Seph say that six different worlds all meet the same end, the meteorite? Also, Aerith is a true blood ancient who is more connected with Earth. So, her death made the connection with the Earth stronger. Lastly, Cloud is still being controlled by Seph.

The whole "multiple worlds" thing and how worlds like the one Zack is in have a split in the sky signifying the eventual end of that world, Im thinking of it as one timeline, where multiple scenarios are created, but only the true timeline will continue to exist. Maybe it has something to do with the will of the Planet or the Lifestream, which worlds live or cease to exist, and that's why Sephiroth wanted to control "destiny"? Just me thinking

The developers have stated that they want to release part 3 by 2027. The only reason we got Rebirth four years after remake was because the team was prioritizing dlc for remake which took them an extra year. Also the pandemic may have had something to do with slowed down work paces.

The something Kitase was talking to Nomura about is Aerith surviving and returning back to the Crew in a grand and Epic fashion. It has to be! Nothing else comes to my mind. Kitase allways felt bad for Aerith getting killed, since he was strictly against that when Nomura came up with the Idea and Sakaguchi green lit that Idea.

Appearantly the japanese fanbase didn't take Aerith's "death" too well, they really love her over there. Since people don't really understand what was happening in the ending, I'm not surprised they addressed this in the ultimanias to keep their hopes alive. And to make sure part 3 will be sold properly.

And her beeing alive in the remake would not take away from her death in the OG since I handle the whole remake as detached from the Original FF7. Also there is enough Trauma to go around in the Game. Seeing and playing Aeriths flashback in Chapter 13 made me cry so bad! I was coursing out the devs for making me go through that.That was gutwrenching. I would love for Aerith to be alive and happy at the end. She deserves this. I mean how many times did she die in the other timelines? And she can remember all of it? That is soo fucked up. Yet she still pulls through and does what she has to do. Nice analysis, so much stuff! The use of the rainbow had me thinking to the same verse you quoted. There might be something to the link and they like to use global references...remember what Aerith was saying while praying at the altar? About not knowing how to do it right? Reminded me of Matt 6: 5-15, particularly 7-9. We never see Sephiroth kill Aerith in the church, it's just implied, so who knows. And how many Aerith's have working white materia? Gaaaaah, headache...

I want them to explain the whole Intermission thing with Zack. It feels so disconnected from the Rebirth game. I do hope they do utilize Zack more in Part 3. They had him to just to suffer the whole time. The ending credits for Rebirh had removed some parts of the ending of Rebirth.

I also have felt uneasy about them keeping characters alive who died in the OG but so far I feel they have been handling it all pretty well. Wedge Jesse and biggs(for the most part) are all dead. Zack to cloud and Aerith are also dead. However the way they handled Cloud and Zack fighting together was perfect, it was quick and effective and was awesome in my opinion. These two have been friends but have never been warriors together, this tiny section of the game was chefs kiss.

I think when Cloud did block Sephiroth coming down on Aerith it did create another timeline and she could still be alive for that reason and if the worlds merge in part 3 they could still see her again soon enough including Zack. Also I would prefer a happy ending to this remake trilogy myself and I hope part 3 will take less time to release from here since it's already been in development since 2022 as someone else said.

Im a huge fan of the first and have been playing it every year since it came out and even I want a happy ending this time. I’m hoping what this trilogy turns out to be is a sequel to the original and not an actual remake with the same beats, and Aeriths fate hinges on this; if she’s dead it’s a remake, if she survives it’s a sequel. It would also make sense to the overarching thematic essence to FF7 with is ‘the lifestream’ and how it represents the CYCLE of life and death, not just death like a lot of ppl think. Things die, return to the planet, then through the lifestream give life again; for Aerith she dies in the original, returns to the planet, then is given life again in this remake timeline. To me that’s poetic and the right thing to do this time for the story imo. To sum it up I agree with you lol.

The same happens with aerith now. She changes things, changing the memories and now she uses Cloud using the same tools but with different attitude. At the beginning, only cloud saw sephi, but along the way, ppl started to get thoughts of him because of cloud etc, which made a way to come back. At the end, even Rufus sees sephieoth in Jenova infected soldiers, which wasnt the case in the beginning of remake. And I believe that the same tool is used by aerith now. Memories. Why I think that's the case? Red felt the connection with presumably dead aerith when she touched him in the ending, but because Cloud saw her survive, his memories are changed much more than any1 else's from the team.

I'm honestly not going to lie, after the multiverse was really starting to rear it's head I started checking out. I remember during the lockdowns being hyped AF for part two. I wasn't sure how I felt about back being back but honestly but I couldn't help to to have some degree of excitement for how this was going to play out. I really hate multiverses and the biggest let downs for me about Rebirth were all the multiverse stuff. Which as an absolute shame because most of the rest of this game was amazing. Unfortunately for part three I'm completely unexcited for now and to be honest I really doubt anyone can stick a landing like this. Avengers Endgame only barely managed to stick the landing with their multiverse and what they did was to avoid everything as much as possible. Really it was a bunch of callbacks but when they dragged in alternate timeline Thanos I just wasn't down for it. I would have much preferred we not get a action set piece at the end over what we did get and I feel the same about the final part of this trilogy. I suppose it's possible to stick this landing but I really don't have any hope for it. I very much preferred the idea that these were post Advent Children Aerith and Sephiroth and they know how events are supposed to play out only to change their destinies by the end only for Sephiroth to lay claim to it by absorbing the Whispers and basically becoming the new Harbinger of Fate. That would have allowed for Sephiroth to either proceed with his original plan or to go way off onto something new. The problem here is it looks like both to me. By using the Black Materia Sephiroth seems to be planning to create multiple timelines and I personally have no idea what for and I don't like that. I suppose to become even, more Godlike? By absorbing multiple timelines maybe Sephiroth can become more powerful I guess. Or maybe Sephiroth wants to create splinter timelines with the goal of undoing caused in the original timeline by merging the splintered timelines into the main timeline, but then why is Aerith trying to stop him? All and all, from the way things are looking I would have preferred an accurate retelling of the original game maybe with added context and expanding on certain things instead of all this convoluted stuff. I personally hate the idea of having multiple characters from multiple different timelines and what makes Sephiroth so special that he's the only one across all timelines? Because he absorbed the Whispers I guess? I'm just not feeling where the story is going in Part 3, (Whatever they're going to call it.) It's a shame because I loved Remake and in some ways Rebirth was even better. I'd say they were consistently about the same, though Rebirth has more replayability with all the mini games and does have better gameplay thanks to the improved move sets, and access to a wider range of characters throughout the game. But Remake had a stronger story thread due to lacking the multiverse stuff.

I’m sure we will get a happy ending with an alive Aerith and Zack but the real question will be if they both do survive the devs will have to choose which couple to make canon. This means will Aerith and cloud get together than who will Zack get Yuffie? Cissnei? Tifa fans would be pissed. Or will it be cloud and tifa? Zack and Aerith? But then this will piss off the cloud/Aerith fans. This is most likely the devs biggest hurdle about keeping Aerith alive. Much easier choice if Aerith is dead by process of availability. 😂. Only way I can see a happy ending where Aerith is dead is if they fast forward until the entire party dies and they all reunite in the lifestream. That would be a huge stretch tho.

Zack is the first to defy fate. He's tied to both Aerith and Sephiroth. In the Kalm recap, Cloud was telling Zack's story. And Sephiroth is obviously in love with him. Thats why he didnt kill him when he could've. The reason he's obsessed with Cloud is the same reason Aerith liked him so much. Cloud is Zack's legacy. With the jenova cells, they're all brothers now, too. And maybe Aerith Prime is guiding his choices.

I think Zack may be part Cetra. When looking at the world intel for Gongoga. It was home to descendents of the Cetra and was largely out of the way and isolated through most of its history. Also, I don't think Zack was ever infusioned with Jenova cells, considering he never showed signs of degradation and because he was already enhanced with Mako.

Unlike Seph, who was infused in utero without the mako infusion that probably strengthened Zack's immunity to jenova cell infusion. Sephiroth's birth mother Lucrecia could've been a Cetra, too. Which might make sense of Sephiroth's ability to control the whispers, navigate or manipulate worldlines. Zack shouldn't be alive, so every choice makes defies fate. DUDE! Zack HAS TO BE Cetran. How else is he able to chill with Aerith in the lifestream in Advent Children. You just blew my mind.

Plenty of Remakes still to the blueprints of the original. The remake we were told was supposed to be here was no different. The reason for a Remake was modern graphics, squaring away plot holes or inconsistencies, etc. Not changing fundamental and core concepts that made the original so special. Thats why people who are upset about the direction, are upset about it. Because instead of an RE2/4 remake scenario, we’ve got a multiverse where people die but not really, and we have flying trash bags everywhere invading every scene they’ve ever been in, removing the focus from the characters we should be focused on. I’m sure a lot of people want the ending of the trilogy to be different, but didn’t want them to sacrifice the characters moments that lead up to it. And a lot of people feel really strongly about not wanting multiverses, or that Aerith’s death should’ve been handled better than just a means to further Cloud’s characterization.

I think the bible part about rainbows is a bit of a reach. I would guess it's more to do with the fact that a rainbow is what you get when you literally split apart light, the way the world splits apart. The idea could be that white materia binds all your dreams into one, but defying the whispers is what causes those dreams and hopes to diverge into separate worlds. Also they do need to give FF7 a rest for a long while. I wouldn't be against them turning Advent Children into a game some time in the future but for now I would rather they keep making new FF games, while doing Remakes with this hit ATB/Action hybrid system, but with different stories like FF8. FF8 has a great world, great music and the characters I think are good (and for all their flaws, a remake is a change to fix any issues.) Rather than keep cashing on nostalgia with FF7, why not try to build up FF8 too since it's quite similar to FF7 in a lot of ways (sci-fi, even some of the plot elements were originally intended for FF7)

I don't really have that much of an attachment to FF7. Do I want Aerith to live? Well, I like her because she's a nice person and she makes an effort to try to touch Cloud on a more personal level, whether that be as lovers or friends. Otherwise, I never really cared too much for the Final Fantasy series due to the theme of death in a lot of the games (Ex: Jessie, Aerith, Tidus, Rasler, Noctis, & Lunafreya). However, I feel like everyone who says "Aerith is dead....period!" are more than likely the purists who don't see an ending for FF7R other than what it should originally be and believe that multiple timelines overcomplicate the story. But, even if Aerith still dies, she survives in fanart, fan stories, and cosplay.

I dont necessarily MIND multiverse inherently, but when you go down that path, you better do it well or you're gonna lose the narrative real quick. I appreciate an ambitious swing, but lets be real, the original FF7 was already pretty convoluted in its story telling, and these new games make them look straight forward. I'm definitely worried that this game is going to go full Kingdom Hearts and become a meme of convoluted storytelling breaking the saturation point. we'll see.

Judged on a whole as a video game, this is a triumph. It looks beautiful, the music is fantastic, the exploration is surprisingly engaging and rewarding, the combat is solid, and there are more mini games here (most of which are actually fun) than i can remembering being in any AAA game I've ever played. So, because of the love and passion that was clearly layered into the development of this game, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they can bring this together in a satisfying way in part 3. i wouldnt be shocked if thats not he case, but for now, ill let them cook...

I've watched the ending a couple of times and I don't really think the ending is supposed to be anything close to satisfying, at least not in the way many wanted. Most people I've talked to with an open mind, and by this I mean they weren't asking for specific things to happen towards the end, were generally fine or even liked the ending because of how many questions they had and the level of ominousness they felt with Cloud and his mind potentially breaking harder than the original game. As for the multiverse stuff, while I don't like the idea in general, I don't think it's done terribly here nor do I disqualify anything for being multiverse. If I can connect with the characters in some way then I don't care what type of plot it is.

I'm really sorry but this absolutely has to get out of me: I find this whole plot of multiverse and destiny, of connection between all the games and the film, completely full of crap. I'm curious what Sakaguchi would think of all this. I would have liked so much that they would make a magnificent remake for us by simply adding new elements of lore as they did with the Gi, the Ancients, the development of the characters and their relationships, all sublimated by a production amazing. But no, they had to add this multiverse, bring back Zack and possibly save Aerith later, add a messy script line as possible which makes the whole thing confusing for those new to the license, all to satisfy certain fans eager for romance and happy ending. Damn I'm so pissed. Sorry for all this salt but FF7 is the game of my life and it's a nightmare for me to see this.

The whole timeline thing is unnecessary fluff to me. The original story is a little more grounded in reality to resonate more with it. Largely being if people die they die and its much more brutal but thats real life. The evil villain talking to Rufus is absolutely the worst part of the remake for me. I think Zack could play a part considering he was important during the Nibleheim incident and also Marlene mentions to him that in order for Cloud to save Aerith Zack needs to help Cloud because he’s ‘sick’ (his mind, my interpretation) coincidentally at that moment Cloud was also suffering from mako poisoning while sitting in a wheelchair so it could be foreshadowing that in the future Zack has a bigger role in doing that

I loved the game. They did amasing job on bringing the charcters to life. Story part had me a bit disappointed. I do belive they are over playing sephiroth in the games. The more you beat the main villian you take alot of anticipation and buuld up. Maybe third part will surprise us, maybe it’ll be Jenova itself the one scene from Remake that caught me off guard was the meteor one which I figure will be shown in pt 3. We get a glimpse of it and maybe I’m overthinking things, but by the end Sephiroth and Cloud both are standing back to back almost like allies and all Cloud says is his name and it goes dark We don’t know who is under the hood, it just shows this hooded person getting closer and closer until it’s right behind Tifa and then it TURNS into Sephiroth.
