This is just a weird take. Of course he wasn’t the only person contributing, but he was one of the more popular ones. As a black male I never thought HE was racist, but he normalized hate speech within his community whether it was intentional or not. I respect Charlie and respect his opinion on the matter, but unfortunately he lives in a reality that’s different from most minorities. He will never fully understand how these slurs impact people, and I don’t mean that in a hateful way. Being black I knew at an early age that my life wouldn’t be the same as most white peoples’ lives; thats just the current state we live in as a civilization (especially as an American). EDIT: Someone in the comments pointed out that Ian’s supporters would often say “its just words” in response to people criticizing his use of slurs and I distinctly remember that phrase appearing all the time in Ian’s comments section. The harsh truth is sometime its not just words, they can come from a rooted history of malice and oppression. These words represent the stereotypes that still continue in some ways to this day. They can represent generations of literal slavery, torture, and death not even exaggerating here. I’m not saying all nasty words should be banned or something, but people to need recognize these words come from somewhere. Just to toss in my experience here, I was 13 when I started watching iDubbbz and he was definitely the reason I used slurs in my early teens. By the time I was 16 I thankfully wised up and stamped out that part of me, but a lot of people I was friends with then are still like that now. I'm in my 20s now and seeing iDubbbz apologise makes me believe that those people I was once friends with can move on from that behaviour.

I don't think Charlie fully understands the impact it had on a lot of people. I'm both black and gay, and around that time I was younger and a lot less secure in my identity. With the content idubbbz made, the normalizing of slurs and making fun of gay people it was just very hard to stay positive. And it wasn't just him. Because his content was so popular, other creators started copying it and it became cool to say slurs. Then it started leaking into real life. Hearing kids and teens say these slurs wasn't uncommon at all. And then with pewdiepie dropping the n-word hard r and all, or saying 'nibba' and people claiming 'it's not a big deal', it was like our opinions and feelings didn't matter. We were just being talked over. I steered clear from so many youtube channels because it was becoming bad for my mental health, seeing the type of audience they fostered. So I'm glad he became more mature and saw the error in his ways. It was a heartfelt apology that I actually accept.

While I am in no way a black person, I still see how bad of impact was created. I was still in middle school and faced with bigoted comments back in 2016 by my fellow classmates. I think many people that disliked your original video would also hold the opinion that iDubbz was not a horrible, racist monster during the time he made those videos. I think the issue is more that, he made an apology acknowledging how influential, and significant the role his content played in that KZbin era was, and that apology was healing for a lot of the people affected. Most of us understand that he was heavily influenced by his surroundings, but still believe that him taking responsibility for the part his content played with an apology was incredibly helpful and affirming. That’s why people are upset, because it felt like you’re video pushed back against the affirmation that those marginalised people have been waiting for. I think a major point Charlie is missing is that the apology video isn't just about Ian: it's also about the audience he cultivated and the groups of people that were victimized by them. I think there is far less people who believe he "created" this bigoted audience than Charlie thinks, but I also think that it's pretty common knowledge that you don't need to create something to help keep it alive, especially if they have such a massive platform. So of course he feels guilty about that, not just the immediate consequences of shouting slurs in every vid. As for the victims of said actions, they are the ones Ian is truly apologizing to, because I think he's a decent person now and they're the ones who were affected the most. Whether or not they forgive him, it's up to them, but he was a big (tho not the only) reason why it seemed normal for them to face daily bigotry (I would know because I was one of them). The apology wasn't just a way for Ian to move on with himself, but also a genuine try to give closure to the ones he was responsible for indirectly hurting.

Growing up when he was making that sort of content, I saw how it changed my friends senses of humor and made them wayyyy more lenient and PROUD to say hurtful, racist, or sexist things. I think it’s totally fine for Ian to apologize for what he put out into the world, because he did cultivate an audience of young, impressionable kids, who took what he did and said seriously and implemented it into their real life interactions. All my friends watched him, loved his content, and how aggressively offensive it could be. I first found Ian’s content when I was 10 years old. My friends and I would binge watch his videos and found ourselves saying slurs very comfortably. Watching his videos radicalized me and turned me into an awful person. I was very racist and edgy and thought gore was funny. I terrorized several people I used to be friends with and found justification in it from Ian’s content. Thankfully after I turned 15 I started to realize the harm I caused and changed, but I think you missed the point of how detrimental his content was to those of us who were much younger in 2016; especially those who were victims of Ian’s content.

When I came out as bi in 9th grade a group of edgy kids who were huge Idubbz fans thought it would be funny to create a group chat dedicated to making fun of me. They dedicated a whole week to creating a fake persona of a trans girl who reached out to me on Snapchat looking for advice on how to come out properly. I didn’t know it was fake so I tried to give my best advice and be as kind and respectful as I could, even when they made the fake trans person say really weird edgy stuff. They ended up screen-shotting the conversation and sharing with my toxic friend group at the time, and they all called me slurs for the rest of the month and would tell me to stop being “triggered” when I would yell at them to stop. I’m glad Idubbz has apologized for his actions, because his channel absolutely contributed to the culture of harassment back then, and it’s good to see he’s turned it around

While none of us were actually racist, we used the phrase “it’s all okay or non of it’s okay” and anti censorship to totally justify casual racism. And it led to a lot of trouble for us in our school and is so embarrassing and cringey to look back on. I disagree that any one person has much sway in the actions of children (outside of their parents of course). I grew up in a time when kids didn't have mobile phones, (they only became somewhat commonplace around my last 2 years of highschool) and internet speeds for those who did were basically dial up so it didnt even matter if you had one. Point being is, we didn't have internet celebs and the like to influence kids and yet I was still bullied relentlessly for years for being Gay. Ian may have never *intended* for his content to influence young children to be racist thinking they were being edgy and funny, or promote a toxic environment of bigoted and generally mean-spirited people that harass strangers online but that’s what his fan base is/did. Of course, he didn’t command any of these people to do any of these things, but he still majorly benefited from it; that’s why he even has the popularity/relevance/money he has today.
