Huge Mining Shovel, 1955

The shovel in the video is called “The Mountaineer”, and entered service in the 50’s. It worked in Cadiz Ohio for the Hanna Coal Company with the GEM of Egypt and The silver spade (because they all had the same paint scheme). The mountaineer weighed in at 2,750 tons and was built by Marion as a 5760 type. The mountaineer was retired in 1988 for some reason and was dismantled.

Two of these ‘Marion’ stripping shovel models were built with ‘Knee Action Crowd’ , Silver Spade and ‘The Gem of Egypt’ .... the caterpillar crawlers were the same used to transport the Saturn 5 rockets to the Launch Pad, take a good look, as like Dinosaurs these are now extinct !....
