Hello Tyler, at 1:15, you said "two extra protons..." it would have been better if you said "two less electrons", as ionization adds or removes electrons and saying extra proton sounds like there's change in the number of protons. Cheers!

Even though I found this video really helpful, I'm still having difficulty trying to see how the ion in a polyatomic is written.... Say, we have CO3, 2-. How do we get that 2-? Isn't there 3 oxygens? Shouldn't it have been -6...?
@ShouldBeKnown
@ShouldBeKnown 9 жыл бұрын
+Logically Me In CO3 2-, one Oxygen atom shares 2 pairs of electrons with Carbon atom while 2 other Oxygen atoms share 1 pair of electrons with Carbon atom. In this case, 1 Carbon atom and only 1 Oxygen atom has reached their octet structure but there are 2 remaining Oxygen atoms which only have 7 valence electrons each. Thus, 2 electrons are 'gained' to fill both Oxygen atoms up to their octet structure, resulting in CO3 2-.

When an atom gains electron does it becomes positive or is it negative? Pls explain why
@MsSimpleMovies
@MsSimpleMovies 6 жыл бұрын
shehana a maybe someone else can chime in with a better explanation, but until then... An atom that gains an electron gets a negative 1 charge, because you're essentially showing how to get the atom back to its ground state. That is, how to get protons and electrons equal again. Gaining the electron means there is one more electron now than protons, so to get them equal again, you'd need to subtract ("MINUS") one. So the charge is minus 1. Let's try another. An atom loses 3 electrons. What's the charge? Well, to get back to electrons = protons you'd need to add ("PLUS") 3 electrons, right? So, there you have it. The charge is +3. I hope that helps.

When it gains an electron it becomes negative because an electron has a negative charge, -1. If he had lost an electron the atom would become positive since the protons on the nucleus have positive charge, +1. For example, if an atom gains 2 electrons it would become negative with a -2 charge.

How do you know how many total electrons there are then?? Like in Cl-..17 protons, 18 electrons...how did you find the number of electrons??
@veferbogot
@veferbogot 9 жыл бұрын
+Danielle Acevedo It's quite easy actually. The number of protons (17) is given. The element chlorine always has 17 protons in the nucleus. Protons have a charge of +1. So for the Cl anion to have a charge of -1 the number of electrons has to be 1 larger than the number of protons. Easy equation which works for all atoms and molecules: Charge = number of protons - number of electrons

Ok so I get that there are ions and polyatomic ions, but my question is this, why? NH4 Ammonium, for instance. It is a cation. it has 11 protons and 10 electrons why is this? where did the other electron go? I know that these can happen I just want to know why they happen. does it have something to do with electronegativity in the atoms before they combine? Was the Nitrogen atom just missing an electron to begin with? Are the Hydrogen atoms consisting of only a proton and neutron and since the Nitrogen atom wants to be like the noble gases it just takes 3 random electrons magically out of thin air?

@ShouldBeKnown
@ShouldBeKnown 9 жыл бұрын
+Aira Tahrim You can simply deduce it from the compounds. Ammonium ion is made up of a Nitrogen atom and 4 Hydrogen atoms with a positive charge of 1. NH4+. From your periodic table, you can see that a Nitrogen atom has 7 electrons while a Hydrogen atom has 1 electron. Add them all up and you have 11. Now, do remember that Ammonium ion has a positive charge of 1 so there is one less electron. Therefore, you take 11 - 1 = 10 electrons.
@SilvaFox
@SilvaFox 8 жыл бұрын
+ShouldBeKnown This is still backwards thinking to me. Yes, Ammonium ion is positive buy why is it positive? I just can't take the answer, it just is. there has to be a reason. Why is the nitrogen atom missing an electron, or why is one of the hydrogen atoms missing an electron? Why doesn't the ammonium molecule have 11 electrons?

Hi, so how do we know that if for example how many electrons are in oxygen? i know if its neutral it will have 8 electrons as it has 8 protons but if its an ion it will have 10 electrons as its easier to get 2 more electrons to have its outer valance shell full...but how do we know if its neutral or not? like how do we know if it should have 8 electrons or 10?? is this because a single atom/element is neutral but when it needs to go with other elements, it becomes ion???
@NewtonMD
@NewtonMD 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a definition problem. If an atom becomes charged, it becomes an ion or radical. An atom MUST be electrically neutral An Ion MUST be electrically charged Don't say an atom can have a charge, it can't it's like saying a baby can grow beards, thesame way an adult can. No a baby can but ofc when they become and adult, they can grow it Similarly, when an atom becomes an Ion, then it is charged and loses the label "atom" for "ion"

thrn what is the diffrence between a radical and ion
@ShouldBeKnown
@ShouldBeKnown 9 жыл бұрын
+Ptathamesh Khandare Radicals can be charged or uncharged, but they will ALWAYS have an unpaired electron. Ions, on the other hand, are charged atoms or group of atoms(molecules), that can have paired or unpaired electrons. An example, Chlorine atom (Cl) with a charge of +0, is a free radical while chloride ion (Cl-) is an ion. Now, I must warn you that not all atoms with an unpaired electron are radicals. Example: Na. Although Sodium has an unpaired electron, the mobile electron is involved in metallic bonding, thus it not reactive as a free radical.
