If NC would manage streams for wild trout this wouldn’t be as big of an issue….

Agreed

If it weren't for stocking, you'd have ZERO wild fish to catch. Educate yourself. Read a book maybe?
@bjnelson94902 ай бұрын
Dude, without stocked trout the wild fish would have long since been extinct
@SlabDynasty2 ай бұрын
@@CooperJones777 I think he means more the stocking over top of existing wild populations. Yes those wild populations originated from stocked or introduced fish, but NC doesn’t do a great job specifically managing those populations

When did NC quit releasing brown trout? I remember reading that it's been a long time, decades. But I caught some in NC in a couple different creeks. I watched rainbow trout being released in Wilson's Creek a couple times. Also I caught brook trout in a public pond that is free to fish. There are rainbows there too. Apparently both were stocked regularly along with catfish and bass. That's near Taylorsville behind a school called Evansdale or something like that. It's always open, I caught trout at night there.

Hey NC how about restocking the eastern portion fresh water species from the huge fish kills following the last cpl hurricanes

Trout released before they are over like 2 inch long will raise in creek

Weird they didn't stock the big laurel/laurel river DH in Madison county. There was zero impact on that section from the hurricane. Not that im dying to have a bunch of knuckleheads and guides crawling all over my back yard, but it seems like a logical place to stock to give anglers a safe and unaffected place to fish

Are they safe to eat? Did you get one analyses by a far off tester so they won’t know where it came from? I wouldn’t wash my feet in that toxic mess over there now.

I was told by a fly fishing outfitter that stocked trout do not reproduce. If this is true why can’t the hatchery’s raise trout that will reproduce? This would help local waters in the long run.
@SlabDynasty2 ай бұрын
Yes the state stocks sterile trout. This is due to the fact that much of the DH and HS water gets too hot in the summer. But agree that the state needs to realize there’s plenty of DH water that supports trout year round and we wish they’d manage it for self-sustaining populations

Trout fishing is really, REALLY tough from Hendersonville, up to Asheville and east to Marion. I have hit the Catawba, North Mills and Curtis Creek recently... basically zero trout activity whatsoever. Talking to other anglers, they've all been seeing the same. Here's hoping those rivers get some stocking as well! I heard about the Marion hatchery being damaged/destroyed... I think there's an old hatchery in Old Fort that you can see from I-40. Hell, let's get that thing fired up again!
@SlabDynasty2 ай бұрын
Those three rivers were significantly blown out, seen videos from all three. The Catawba especially drains a lot of water and isn’t naturally a great trout stream downstream of old fort. If wildlife doesn’t stock those rivers, they’ll unfortunately fish pretty poorly for some time I’d guess.

@@SlabDynasty In the meantime, I am going to keep heading west, and also going to start exploring more east. Fished the Ararat one day while we evac'd from the storm, but just caught sunfish. I need to find some waters east of Marion, or maybe north.

I fished North Mills the past few days and caught 3 fish. Just fished in the campground portion though. The flooding drastically changed that portion of the river. I have yet to drive up to Wash Creek trailhead and drop down in the creek since the storm. I live on a road off the river and the water was crazy high. But the water dropped really fast due do it being mostly spring fed other than the reservoir. Keep fishing!
