Half Crowns do have the perfect size. Do you know how the planchets are made for the 50 percent silver. The US has 40percent Half Dollars that are clad a copper center with silver on the out side. The surface finishes don't seem to tone the same.

Interesting question I don't know but It seems it's probably a higher quality so as not to show the base metal or less copper

eBay is not bad but antique shops are often better

eBay is your best bet for 50%. Sometimes you can get good deals close to or even under spot on 50% silver coins. Auctions is best if you don't want to overspend. I managed to get most of my 50% silver under spot this way. For older Sterling Silver you will pay a higher premium as they always sell above spot.
