Kenan I love that you're pointing out the benefits of the leaves and needles falling into the water!!! We use leaf litter and drift wood in aquariums because as they break down they leave tannins in the water, giving it that tea look. Tannins are amazing for many purposes, but some of the best among them are anti oxidant, anti microbial, anti fungal, anti bacterial properties! Much like the mud with snapping turtle and other turtle species shells, that natural liter has countless benefits that we don't realize help these animals in captivity! Also algae in the water bowl to an extant can be beneficial, it helps to break down nitrates & ammonia along with other pollutants. Some species of Iguana will scrape algae off of rocks in the wild for food, so could be a free treat for them in your setups too!! Thank you for all the amazing work you do man, and I hope this fish/aquatic nerdgasm helps with something!

I adore the way you love all of your animals. You can just see how happy they are to be around you. My fave has to be when you were petting Nostradamas. I've seen the feeding tours and it never gets old. You definitely never run out of chores. That was a cool in depth tour after the rains. Your passion for these awesome reptiles keeps me coming back. Thank you!

few days ago we got four to six inches of rain here in Broward County. It is very important if you have an outdoor enclosure to have drainage. Baby iguanas and box turtles can drown if there is deep standing water. You have to plan for mother nature's surprises !

Speaking of sterile environments, I read about an unscientific study about kids and dogs. It said homes with dogs and young kids - the kids have less allergies later in life because when they were young they came in constant contact with dogs who had all sorts of germs, and the more contact helped their immune system get stronger.
@riderky15075 жыл бұрын
In another unscientific study, homes with kids in houses where people smoke cigarettes- the kids are less likely to get lung cancer and less likely to want to smoke because when they were young they came in constant contact with cigarette smoke which have nicotine in them and it helped there immune system be stronger.

I recently read, in a pollinator group, that bees prefer puddles to clean-water bowls of water (& marbles). It was said the puddles are mineral rich and may include vitamins and other stuff they need. So, I suspect your beliefs are valid.

Ants are no joke ! Even the little black ones. I had a pet Squirrel for 14 years before it got sick and died. He slept in my room in a cage . One day I'm looking at his cage and I see a piece of corn walking out of his cage to the floor then down my heating vent. I thought I was seeing stuff.😳 So I got down on the carpet to see what was going on and I seen a small trail of black ants . Then all the sudden I feel this incredible burning on my legs. I look down and about twenty ants are biting me ! Talk about jumping up and freaking out ! I ran down the stair grabbed my vacuum and sucked what I could find up ! Then moved the cage and sprayed . I will never forget it because I thought they didn't bite. Boy ! Did my legs itch ! So I hope they aren't biting him.

I don’t know much in regards to reptiles.. but with fish you would be right about how over sterilising their water is bad! Leaf litter and other organic things that fall into the water increase tannins in the water. Tannins are proven to have antioxidant properties and help with fishes immune systems I can imagine it would be similar for reptiles though! Plus the consumption of small amounts of pathogens definitely help build stronger immune systems
