One thought: With an RV, you also need to be aware of the potential for a BLEVE. In the vast majority of cases, RVs are going to have a cylinder of LPG for the onboard stove, heater, hot water tank, etc. You mentioned this obliquely when you were discussing the car fire, but it's definitely worth emphasizing. A 100 lb. LPG tank is a potential bomb.

A couple years ago I was 1st on scene of an RV fire in an RV sales location. Before the 1st engine arrived we had one 40 gallon LPG tank blow off to empty the tank from the overpressure valve and a second 40 gallon LP tank BLEVE after the OP valve failed closed during the vent. My biggest priority was getting the initial extinguishers brought out by employees discharged into the fire, unfortunately with little effect, and keeping the civilians clear of the hazard area. Beware, LPG tanks can be in any location on an RV. In my fire, the tanks were in the lower front of the RV and situated so that the overpressure vents shot out the sides of the RV. The BLEVE launched the tank 40 feet to the side of the RV.

Those lower lines aren't power, that's communication, cable, telephone. The lines up top are power.

I don't think the firefighter taking the nozzle was disrespectful at all. The firefighter on the nozzle initially, wasn't prepared. As you said, it isn't uncommon for someone to pull a line while others are masking up then relinquishing the line when they are ready so that the other person can mask up. What I did find interesting from a Safety Officers view was the guy pulling hose with no gloves on. Hose jackets can easily pick up sharp debris while being pulled along the ground at a fire scene. The RV windows we broken out potentially putting glass all over the ground. Dragging a hose through that could pick up glass on the hose jacket.

The lower lines will usually be either coax cable or phone lines. They will usually be black and the coax is thicker. Not dangerous but can be annoying. I know our power lines on the city where I live will usually run at 7000 to 14000 volts. Definitely don't want to mess with that.

It's been many years since I was a volunteer firefighter, but I would not have parked the engine that close. An RV typically will have a couple of 30# propane tanks plus maybe 60 to 100 gallon of gas or diesel. Likewise I would have started the initial attack a bit further back with the hoseline until the fire was knocked down a bit. I assume everyone has seen the video of the car fire that ruptured the gas tank and surrounded the two firefighters with flaming gasoline.

As a retired ff officer my biggest gripe is the time span of flowing water at most fires , the pump operator get to involved in supply water then using the tank water, then getting supply water !

I enjoyed my time in the fire service, 40 years ago, and as volunteers arrived you would just get on the next truck based on your certifications. I had good luck either to be the last one to get on the first due Engine (there was nothing like riding the tailboard while the driver is doing the speed limit of 60 mph and it was already 5° below zero) or more than likely I would get to be the apparatus operator on our 2nd due Quint. I always enjoyed the math, figuring the angles for best truck placement and keeping each line’s pressures right on the dot with 1 1/2” & 1 3/4” lines & 3” hose that you attached to the ladder bed with individual ladder straps.

I've seen LAFD pull up on car fire, engine bay fully engulfed , passenger area full smoke . Before the rig was fully stop a ff had exited checked drive area, rear driverside , front passenger, rear passenger side took all of 8 seconds. Incredible, gave the all clear and 2 ff moved in with a hose . Other Incredible LAFD things I've witnessed was them refilling choppers in a city park( porter ranch area ) for a brush fire at night. The pilots coming in to land were Incredible , quick hose fed refill, and the sound of the blade cutting into the air to lift all that water was unbelievable.

Car fires and RV fires can be suppressed faster with Ultra High Pressure firefighting systems. They are basically modified pressure washers that produce a water fog or mist. They are similar to fog spikes. A high pressure fog wets and cools surfaces quickly. Using a standard hose and nozzle, water only travels in straight lines, and surfaces that the firefighter is not directly facing, or doesn't have access to stay hot and continue to burn. I'd love to see you cover these newer equipment and tactical options. At a minimum it seems like firefighters should adjust their nozzle to create more of a mist/spray than just a direct stream once they are able to get close enough for this to be effective.

This Video to me looked as if that was a specific task they stretched and had control and it sounded as if she or he was like here u have water take it or something along those lines. I do not think you are correct, except about the teamwork: one team member dropped the ball and the other team member with the K 1200 picked up the ball and made the play. There is NO WAY the nozzlaman’s job is to pull a line then hand it off to the forcible entry team, and then ask for it back again.

There are three layers to telephone poles The lower ones on fire here are cable/phone and low voltage. And WTF ... why no SCBA on attack? If there is a propane tank or aerosol cans this will kill or maim someone. There are several vids showing a sideways tank in an RV venting a flamethrower across a residential street. If you are within 30' of an RV or structure fire and not masked the safety officer needs to slap you.

Fire brigade member at a power plant, if you are around downed powerline take small steps, almost like a shuffle. The larger steps means more potential difference between your legs and you will get bite with it.

In this particular part of the video, I see a firefighter masking up; behind him is a K-12., another firefighter is hitting the front of the RV with his handline. My big concern that you did not mention is what appears to be a downed power line on the ground, running entirely across the road. At this time I wound expect someone to deal with this immediately in order to eliminate the hazard and make certain the area is a safe work zone for all firefighters. Are you seeing the same thing ?

These guys near downtown, skid row and the industrial areas get hammered in this town. Between medical calls in downtown and skid row and fires all over they can get over 50 calls per shift.

As you see in the video there are other RV’s and the homeless park them everywhere. Also the dispatcher is a firefighter assigned to what we call Metro in the City of Los Angeles. Here in California high power lines run on the top of the poles and cable and telephone or low. This is South Central LA and I am Firefighter for LAFD this is a problem now in the city we have homeless living in RV’s or next to buildings and next thing you know we have a full blown structure going. This is a official police tow yard and a claim will be made to the city for damages to their businesses.

When the firefighter hustled by with a second line I had to rewind the video to see if he was running or walking fast, because you should NEVER RUN ON A FIREGROUND !!! When you run, both of your feet are in the air at the same time for most of the time you are running, with only one foot at a time touching the ground for a fraction of a second while you are running leaving you without any stability which has led to many serious Firefighter injuries !!! Therefore when you walk fast like that Firefighter did you always have one foot on the ground, and both feet on the ground prior to the next step assuring your stability. I am a retired Baltimore City Fire Department Captain with almost 39 years service including 5 years as a full time Staff Instructor at the Baltimore City Fire Academy where one of first things we taught new Recruits was Never Run On the Fireground I have a total of 50 years of Fire service as a volunteer, prior to BCFD and after retirement.

Fantastic video full of knowledge. Truly appreciated. It would be curious however to track these people through their careers and learn of how many come down with cancer. Even being involved in a small town VFD, it is stressed upon us how bad smoke inhalation can be for you years down the road because of the carcinogens that it contains, particularly car and dumpster fires. I thought it a little ironic that all of these firefighters had tanks on their backs but no mask up. And they seem to have no problem working in the smoke, which is a flag to me that they do that on a regular basis. No arm chair quarterbacking here, just a reminder that once you get cancer that could have been prevented, it will most probably end your firefighting career and it will most definitely change your life forever, if not end it.

That 2nd from the bottom black line is a fiber line, you can tell from the horseshoe crab spools further away. That's gonna be a pain to fix up. The bottom one is likely coaxial || telephone.

Great video but I'm a little puzzled by the forced entry to the business. I get they need to check for hazards or problems on the other side of the wall but after breaking in to the yard they found there to be nothing there. They already had a ladder setup to get on the roof, would it not have been better to simply look into the yard instead of destroy some random business?

Radiant heat can start fires far away from the source and the fire can start in places that are not visible. For instance a metal roof will transmit the heat to the insulation underneath and start a fire in attics of neighboring buildings without showing any outward signs at first. Also burning debris can get into places that are hard to observe from a distance and start fires that way too. This is a big concern in drought areas like California where there tends to be lots of dry dead brush to help spread fires. It's better to destroy some doors and make sure there is no fire than risk losing the entire property to avoid a relatively cheap door replacement that insurance will pay for anyways.

Knock it down from a position of safety. Move in incrementally closer as the fire is reduced. Would be good to start out with foam. Think water supply. Change up impingement angle of fire steam.

Clarification should be made: power lines are ~top 5 feet or so. Lower stuff phone & cable. Upper stuff 15-30,000 volts. That will saw you in half with plasma if it drops on you.

I quite enjoy vehicle fires. Get to fight fire and not have to do all the bs of overhaul. Something rarely mentioned is that hydraulic pistons can become dangerous projectiles. I was taught to always approach from a angle and never straight from the front or back.

While it would certainly have been far too late by the point that fire was at upon arrival, it should also be considered that someone could be inside. The fact is that we are seeing more and more people making RVs their homes, especially in poor/industrial areas. We have that in New York.

Yeah, ifsta requires 3-5 rungs and I always chuckled at newbies counting rungs. Extend that damn thing and be done. Of course you don't extend 35' on a single story but I always wanted it 6 feet or more above. Gives a visual from further distance where your exit is and like you mentioned, it's just much easier to get on and off.

My RV (small class C) has a 20 gallon (not lb) mounted tank. At a full 80% fill, that's 75 lbs of propane. Luckily, and something I don't often see, the pressure relief vent has a tailpipe to direct the vent downwards. It's better to have the vented gas, or blowtorch, go down onto the ground than to just fill up any void spaces in the engine compartment or storage under the RV. Point is, RVs are dangerous.

They don’t put on air gear until at scene. That gear is kept outside of the crew cab. It part of the “Clean Cab Concept”…to keep carcinogens out of the cab. Turnouts can be laundered at the station.

I would normally be bottle ready and gloved. By the time we made scene. I would normally be able to be first in. I also passed the nozzle to a younger firefighter. That way the got experience and I didn't mind backing them up. They often had bells long before me. I guess adrenaline and stress levels.

From my limited knowledge, I think they used the stream to drown the base of the fire. Much like you would with a fire extinguisher. Using the fog, with as aggressive and hot that fire was burning it would run the risk of evaporating before being useful. Heat rises, so would the steam from the evaporation. I maybe wrong. Again I am unfortunately not very knowledgeable, so hopefully there will be a much smarter person who is able to answer this for you.

Fog does have a utility, however, especially in clearing smoke and hot air out of an enclosed space or if it is blowing onto you

I think it was unsafe for that fire fighter to take the hose away from the person putting on PPE he did not have a mascon or any protection and was very close to the vehicle or something exploded or fire flared up he would not be properly protected by dimension reading in whatever’s coming out of that burning vehicle 12:50

They did a fine job, how ever an under utilized tactic is big fire, big water. A good coordinated mpo and a member on the deck gun could knock the crap out of a fire like that with only 45 seconds of water while the hand line is being stretched and they would sill have about 250 gallons left even if they didn't stretch in. This is a much faster knock down, but just a different tactic.

It's actually a good thing that they broke into the business as there might have been something going on there related to the fire, like a crime scene in the building and the fire is a distraction or a quick way to destroy evidence or there might be something else that's not related to the fire but very dangerous like a gas leak and since the fire affected the business by burning the fencing it makes sense to error on the side of caution, plus I'm sure the business has insurance for stuff like this. I have heard of someone shooting people in a business and setting a fire close to the business and nobody thought to check the business especially since there was a fire close by, people just naturally assumed that the business would be closed so it wasn't odd that nobody was around, which I'm sure was the motive for the fire.
