My dad was killed in a propane explosion at a fire. He was my hero as an army veteran then a Fire Fighter, i idolized him. I will never forget the day when the Chief came to my mommas house with a liaison officer and told her of his death. I saw her breakdown and i broke down with my momma. Luckily the guys from the fire house and mommas family and dads family were a great support to us and helped us through it. Im proud of the service my dad gave, not only as an army veteran but also as a fire fighter.

I can't even imagine the immediate sense of horror and fear seeing the commanders show up at the door. As a child, it probably wouldn't hit right away the same way, but an adult is immediately going to recognize it, even if they don't immediately realize it consciously. It has to be the worst "bottom dropping out" feeling. Sorry that it happened to you and your family, but thanks to your dad for protecting us.

He most likely has been in that situation before. Firefighters are mentally prepared for this kind of stuff. There are a lot of video's on youtube with explosions and in most of them, they respond similar to the guy in this video.

It was a 100lb propane tank and they never found the top of the tank. Also a 12 inch section of the concrete rat wall at the base of the garage wall flew 125 feet and went through the 2nd story of a nearby house

@@drewschlosser26 I think that must be a requirement to attain chief status. Most have seen almost all of it before. Actually got sort of a complement from one once after an issue where we found out about using the air pack (late 1970's) - sent 5 from the first in station to the hospital with monoxide issues. Chief knew I was riding at another station because of the shift. He called over and had me report to the station affected. Even though I was a volunteer, he knew my abilities and knew that I knew the territory. A company that should have known better (engineering firm) moved a wall in their space and put it too close to the sprinkler. Although the sprinkler activated the water bounced off the wall and over the waste basket. The fire smoldered for hours before we got the call. 3 feet of water was backed up behind the large wooden front doors.

Many years ago as a young firefighter in a small rural VFD, I was in the officer seat of the first due engine. We were going to beat the Chief to the scene, I thought it would be a great idea to give an arrival report. I had just completed a command class, but arrival reports were not common in our County. I called the Chief on the radio and said we have a two and half story wood frame dwelling with heavy smoke and flame through the roof, with limited access. The Chief responds to me on the radio "that's why they called us", oh well I tried. I still get teased about it. That was probably 30 years ago, and the Chief, is long since deceased, RIP Chief. I agree the officer and dispatcher did a good job.

This breakdown is excellent. I particularly do like your emphasis in calm, thorough, deliberate scene survey. Especially for a Fire Commander, coolness is literally vital. I also like your acknowledgment of the Emergency Communicator, listening attentively and relaying accurate updates after the Officer broadcast. This serves multiple purposes: it lets the Commander know he was heard and how he was heard, it ensures that the message got to all units, in case a dead zone or some other factor exxed out all or part of the scene report, and it offers the Commander the chance to amend his report, after the read-back. It is vital in a mutual aid situation, as it coalesces responding units into a clear, unified frame of mind and purpose, before coming on scene. I can vouch for the value of a good EC, equally as important as the Incident Commander. This EC sounds to be familiar with protocols and practices, emphasizing the necessary information. I have had the joy of serving in the field with the benefit of a skilled EC, whether I was on a medical call, fire response, or peacekeeping mission. I have had the contrast with a dispatcher who had no feel for the field, and one who felt he was in charge. The latter can be more dangerous than a flashover. All around, real professionals have broad knowledge and hold teamwork and thoroughness, clarity and safety, at the highest level. Excellent presentation, excellent example.

When I belonged to a rural NY fire dept some years ago, we had a "brush truck. It was a 1-ton 4WD used or fighting brush or grass fires. However, after fighting house fires where a vehicle was either in a garage or near the house, we equipped he brush truck with 50 feet of cable and a large hook. Using it to drag the vehicles a safe distance from the fire did two good things; it cleared the space round the structure and limited the overall damage suffered by the homeowner

In July of 2021 my neighbors back deck and eves caught fire from a shorted A.C. unit below which was still arcing heavily. Nobody was home but his dog was not in the back yard. I was attempting to jimmy a basement window open when a police office first on the scene came around back and made me leave. Within a few minutes a large propane tank exploded raining burning bits of eves and roof down on the neighborhood. The neighbor behind was videoing the fire and caught the fireball that briefly engulfed the entire backyard. The explosion pushed his sliding back door and dining set into his living room and set half of the house on fire. Responding firefighters battled the quickly spreading fire while 2 went into the house and found his dog under the master bed. The dog was unconscious from smoke inhalation but with oxygen, he revived. Needless to say, I have a new level of respect for first responders.

I am a 21yr Veteran VFF One thing almost all of us miss is what type of vehicles are in the driveway. Notice the Full Size Cargo Van with the rack on it Carrying what appears to be pipe. This should tell you something about your scene. This is a Plumbing contractor, Electrician, or HVAC contractor this means two of these guy use larger propane or map gass cylinders, this could also contain empty refrigerant containers. All of these increases the chance of explosions, and Hazzardous Chemicals on site. I always teached the initial walk up is where a Command Officer shows he or she has balls of steel. Because of Murphys Law you never know what you are walking into. Notice the color of flames extending from the garage. This can tell you about the intensity and what is burning.

As Vol FF yrs. back we had a fully involved structure. I was on the nozzle as we advanced around the D side. There were two 70 LB RV LPG bottles. Had the nozzle on fog pattern working the side of the house. I was about 20 feet around the corner, as I turned that's when I seen the first lpg bottle do a Roman Candle, and the second bottle BLEVE. Knocked me and the guy behind me backwards. The bottom 1/3 was impacted in the ground about 10-12 inches the rest of it was every where else. As for the first one that did a Roman Candle we never did find it.

When I was a kid, my parents were Volunteer Firefighters. There was one call my Dad got, where he had to go to a structure fire at someone's house, but he couldn't leave me at home. So, we rode out the fire together. I stayed well back from the structure and the fire, while they attempted to put it out. Suddenly, we start hearing little explosions start popping off in the burning house. I was told at the time, that it was ammo cooking off. And by the sound of it, it had been quite a bit of it. We backed off even further, so there was no risk of anyone getting hit by anything thankfully. Apparently that's a common occurrence, especially here in The South. :-)

I'm not a firefighter but it looks like he made a conscious decision to walk to the right of the car. I don't know if it was to use the car to block some heat or to use as cover in case of an explosion. There were some small fireworks going off and being the 4th of July there could easily be a pallet of them somewhere. Plus it's a garage and I know what's stored in and around mine, that alone would be a warning for me.

As one who never had the formal training on such.....depends....does your department go clockwise or counter-clockwise? After watching bunches of videos here (and about 7 years riding - Houston, with 3 years running a rehab - 896 with Box-4 in Dallas), the videos make it clear different departments do it different ways. For safety, you don't want to interact with an unfamiliar scene without knowing how that department does it. Dallas was back then, a big fan of using the desk gun and dumping the tank if need be. Back then, the north side fancy houses still had a lot of wood shingle roofs. Unfortunately, having the money to afford said houses doesn't include common sense. Like the guy who moved his BBQ on the the covered patio because it was really windy the day he wanted to cook. I'll bet most people here know what the result was. I'll leave it at, it was still standing....

I'm amazed at the turnout to American shouts. We have a standard turnout of 2 appliances to a house fire, usually will end up with 4 at a shout like this. That's a max of 12 to 24 crew, including the OIC etc. It's much more often close to the minimum, which is 8 to 16. Our appliances are very different in that we don't have dedicated engine, truck or rescue crews (there are turntable ladders in the bigger cities) so a 4 appliance shout means 4 of the same type types of engine. We definitely don't have deck guns! Only the airport crews have that and they are dedicated only to the airports. I watch these and can't help thinking how useful an exchange trip could be. I'm in Scotland and we do things so differently even though fire is fire everywhere!

First time viewer. Since you answer questions about firefighting i have one. It has to do with booms. I worked for a large gas utility in Massachusetts. During late 80s and all of 90s we had one of the oldest CI distribution system. 100+ yrs old. In the winter we had daily broken mains from late December to end of March. We covered 6 cities and towns with 3 crews and 1 on call emergency crew for off hour coverage. Our street dept worked 24/7 if you wanted ot. Mainly plastic now and employees are triple now. We never had F D on site and if we did they were in their truck down the str. This was even the busiest and experience departments. Many of these were close to boom until broken main repaired and purged. Because of KZbin i now see what could of happened to me. It was a rush finding, digging, and repairing a possible boom. Nationally it seems there is newer protocols requiring FD response to any gas situation. This has drastically put fear into many people. Making it look like the crews working are not in control or experienced enough. I took pride in the fact for 15yrs i had about 200 to 300 very dangerous situations and we never lost a building and even longer. What is the federal protocols for gas situations

Some neighborhoods don't have any way to supply water to a burning house if the neighborhood is on a mountain, so they use tanker trucks to supply water to the pumper truck. Tell them to go lights and siren because I wrecked these damn things over here. Either the explosion from the house or the explosion I had blew a hole in these damn things. Over" "And if any one of the neighbors call about the wretched odor, go ahead and blame that shit on the propane. You better get a haz mat on standby. Over" "I don't hear the engines. Did you dispatch them? I'm about to leave and let this sombitch burn itself out. I don't know what the hell they keep in that garage but I guarantee this guy ain't growing weed. Over"

In the early part of the video. Its obvious the propane tank is venting because of pressure. The fire has heated the tank forcing it to open pres safty vale. You can see the flame caused by the release. That would be a sign to stay clear until cooled off

More dangerous, explosive things in the garage than in any other part of the house.

Where I live most of the companies are 100% volunteer and they average 4-8 minutes for the first engine or ladder truck to leave the station towards the scene where the chiefs are on scene within 3-5 minutes after dispatch

That stuff is burning and the basketball net is still standing. Thats a piece of wood, like a piece of the fascia or framing, which demonstrates how powerful the explosion was. That would also easily blow out the sheetrock which is already brittle from the heat. That removes the normal barriers to air flow, convective and radiant heat and causes a massive increase in fire volume. The pops could be many things but a gun safe in the garage or even ammunition stored outside a safe. Statistically not a danger to firefighters unless its chambered in a weapon but a potential danger that needs consideration.

I would have had a ground monitor hooked to a 5" helping the engine deck gun. My second and third engines would each lay down 3 2 1/2" attack lines to enter the home through the Charlie side.

Interesting to see how America handles fires. Here in the Netherlands we never send a Chief out first to check on the area. Though our turnouts are usually 30 seconds to a few minutes and there are way more stations per area compared to America.

I know you said it was a propane explosion and it not disputing that but that sounds like ammunition cooking off those little pops in that little streak flash that you saw when they started

There were flame/sparkler trailers - exploding ammunition should do that but will give similar “bang” or “pop”

I guess through all the good work from everybody the one thing I think could be improved on is the officer checking with the person he talked to (assuming its the owner, which might not be the case) what they are keeping in their garage. With the size of the fire and knowing that there is a gas tank stored there, an explosion seemed very likely (on hindsight ofcourse)

In hindsight it seems like something obvious but it's 3 in the morning and people are woken up in the dead of the night by fire. In between fear, tiredness, and whatever is going on in someone's head, I doubt they could honestly remember what's in their garage at that very moment.
