Welcome back to my blacksmithing workshop! Today, I’m excited to share a special project with you: forging the sharpest handmade tuna knife from a massive saw blade. This knife is not just any knife; it’s designed for precision and efficiency, perfect for slicing through tuna with ease.
In this video, you’ll see the entire process from start to finish. We begin by selecting a high-quality saw blade, known for its durability and strength. The first step involves heating the blade in the forge until it reaches a glowing red-hot temperature. Using traditional blacksmithing techniques, we carefully hammer and shape the blade, ensuring it maintains the perfect balance and weight.
You'll witness the intricate details of grinding and honing the blade to achieve a razor-sharp edge. Watch as I meticulously polish the blade to a mirror finish, giving it both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The handle is crafted from premium materials, ergonomically designed for a comfortable grip during extended use.
Throughout the video, I’ll share tips and tricks for blacksmithing enthusiasts, highlighting the importance of temperature control, hammer techniques, and blade geometry. Whether you’re a seasoned blacksmith or a beginner looking to learn more about the craft, this video has something for everyone.

What a beautiful workpiece, and awesome delivery of your skill and dedication in a rustic shop that reminds me so much of mine. This video inspires me to start, and having watched so many forging channels in the past, I lack the knowledge of a smith and an expensive shop. But now I am grateful to see a "back to the basics" shop with a fantastic product as the outcome. Thank you, sir!

FYI saw blades that have a.carbide tooth or any inserted tooth. Those blade bodied are usually not suited for knives. Usually you want a one the tooth and body are the same. These typically are high carbon. The blade your using in the video does seem to be high carbon. This can be identified by the sparks why you were griding. Yes different shaped sparks are a I dictator of the carbon or lack of. The more the fingers in the spark the better. Thats rule thumb.

Really not a true forge to me.. its a cutout and the edge forged and hit with a hammer a few times to make the holes. real forger would have started with a square piece forged into the knife from scratch! my opinion. what about the hardening process as well?

Considering this is the way I make knives (i.e with a piece of sheet steel and an angle grinder) I’d have to say you’re dead right, it’s a legitimate way to make them but it’s by no means hand forged

What is the purpose of putting dents on the knife? Was it to have a semblance it was forged instead of stock removal? 🤔
@masterknives555
@masterknives555 Күн бұрын
Thanks for your question! 😊 The dents you see on the knife serve a couple of purposes: Aesthetic Appeal: They give the knife a rustic, hand-forged look, showing the craftsmanship involved. 🛠️ Functionality: These dents can help reduce friction when cutting, making the knife more efficient. 🍴 So, it's both for looks and practicality! 👍🔪

@@masterknives555 I don't comprehend the science behind how dents reduces friction. Isn't hardness and sharpness of the cutting edge the factors of an efficient knife? Your reason sounds BS to me.

For a tuna knife you want the dimples in the blade so the fish don't stick to the knife when cutting. They're not just for looks

Is there a cleanliness factor with porous dimples though ? Considering food safety or doesn’t matter ?

I'm not sure I'd call this forging. Let's be fair, you drew the shape and cut it out. Straightened out any minor warps, heat treated then sharpened. There was no drawing out any metal, no shaping. You fabricated it, which is NOT forging.

Thanks for your comment! 😊 I appreciate your perspective. While it's true that I use stock removal techniques, I believe there's still an art to it. Each knife is handcrafted with care, from shaping to heat treating and sharpening. 🛠️🔥 Craftsmanship comes in many forms, and I enjoy sharing my journey with you all. Hope you continue to enjoy my content! ✨🔪

Thanks for your feedback! 😊 While the holes might look like potential spots for bacteria, I ensure thorough cleaning and use food-safe materials to keep everything sanitary. 🧼🔪 I also recommend proper maintenance and regular cleaning for all handmade knives to keep them in top shape! 👍✨
@JoseLay

Sir I understand that the material could be safe, but cleaning a knife shouldn't take more than one minute, in your present knife you had to pay attention not only that every depression is clean, but then you need to throughly dry each one, as humidity is a natural enemy for high steel carbon. in other words is a high maintenance design.
Мы никогда не были так напуганы!
