I used to dumpster dive all the time when I scrapped metal. The best dumpsters to hit are roll offs in residential areas. Forclosures, apartment evictions, etc. I met a few realtors that way, now I don't climb in dumpsters, I hire people to do the cleanouts and get to cherry pick them before we start.

My fav place to get packing and shipping materials is guitar center, Also for the guitar boxes as well, I literally get about 80% of my shipping materials out of the dumpsters< You would be surprised how many resellers buy every single item they use to ship and it adds up in the end. Nothing beats getting a reasonable stockpile of in-demand commodities/consumables that are consumed in volume for free! And tar paper is really useful/in demand both for regular people and professionals. If you are just a guy who wants to build a shed at your property, you will need a few rolls, but even for a contractor 14 rolls is nothing to be scoffing at if you can get a bargain for them. Every way you can improve your margins is a good thing! 14 rolls is viable for someone to go out of their way to pick up - it might be enough to complete a job. When we were building our country house the only thing we actually bought new for top-bucks had been concrete for the foundation and thick wooden beams to support roofing and floors. But we even got reinforcement for the concrete second-hand - it is easy to get some good steel for scrap value or even free. Plus we got second-hand/surplus bricks, wood, roofing materials, internal finish materials, all sorts of fittings. So our house actually turned out dirt-cheap to build... The bricks are a funny story: old buildings get demolished all the time and some olden days bricks are much better than the new ones. The construction guys will totally allow you to pick and move out all the bricks you want for free, so that they don't have to do it. You just pay for the transport and would be able to afford a brick house. new quality bricks are ridiculously expensive...

That's how my grandparents built their own in-ground pool - with free bricks from buildings being demo'ed to make room for hwy 252 in MN. My uncle - a kid at the time - was riding by on his bike and asked the construction guys what were they going to do with the big pile of bricks? They said throwing they away. My uncle told my grandparents about it and a couple days later my grandpa went there and loaded them up in his truck! They sat in the backyard for a year, and the following spring he rented a backhoe and dug the hole for the pool. Both my grandparents, my mom, and her three brothers (and some family friends) went to work cementing the bricks in place to make the floor and walls of the pool! My grandpa even built a gorgeous 4-tier waterfall in the corner of the pool at the deep end. It was gorgeous back in the day! It's now dilapidated and falling apart. We tried our best to keep it up over the years but it just got too old and became too much work to fix up. :( It's now home to thousands of tiny baby frogs every spring and a few ducks who visit every spring! It's still kind of cool as it sits, my mom now has her own little pond out back. Last year there were some super tall plants growing in there - we're thinking they might be cattails! Perhaps the ducks had some seeds on them when they landed in the pool. We're hoping they grow the fuzzy brown tops this year! :) But oh if only that pool and back yard could talk!! The stories it would tell!! So many huge parties and fun times it's seen!!! :)

great score for the enviroment as well. i saw you put packing material away in the car. i used to work in retail which also shipped items, even if we unboxed items and got +1000 boxes they would by new ones with their branding on. i'm not fit enough to go on diving in dumpsters anymore and i think its illegal here in sweden.

That looked and sounded more like rolled roofing (same material as asphalt shingles but it is just one big roll) than roofing paper or roofing felt.

Those boxes are great for my cats to scratch. They love it whenever I bring them new dollar tree boxes. Although I could do without all the cardboard pieces torn up everywhere. But it's better than my lazy boy recliner being torn up.

Hard Work always pays off. If them are 90 Lb. Rolls witch means they weigh 90 Lbs. a piece and is the thicker felt paper that sales for $60.00 - $90.00 depending on the brand and life span rating. Damage rolls still sale to. They will cut the damage off or double fold it back or will lap over it. I was glad to see you went back and got them cause it's worth the extra effort Please let us know how good you do with them. I get a rush out of dumpster diving that I always end up with two much shit and more profits. But it all eventually sales and my Dog eats as healthy as I do. Thanks to all the pet stores.
