That is a heading indicator. It only works when installed. It runs independently of a true magnetic compass. It is a gyro.

Regarding Honey and her toy she drags around, please don’t let her play by herself with it as my cat got too active with it and got tangled in it. After that it was put away until someone could play with him. Too risky if he was alone.

Used Avionics and parts need to have a "yellow tag" attached to it certifying that it is serviceable. In your case this is done by an avionics shop that would certify the part serviceable. Without the tag the part would have to be tested before it can be used in a certified aircraft. Bottom line is that the value is much less without the tag. by the way, the part that you have is called a flight director that would be coupled to an autopilot.

After a closer look that is an hsi (horizontal situation indicator) it would be used in place of the heading indicator. I need a bigger screen. It is a heading indicator, glide slope, localizer (ILS instrument landing system), vor all in one. The problem is these are mostly not used anymore. vor's are slowly being decommissioned and glass alternatives are available

The compass on that indicator is electrically connected to a device usually near the end of the wing called a flux valve which is essentially a wet compass. It has many other functions. Can link to VOR or GPS. It has ILS as well which gets a localizer and glideslope signal. In otherwords tells you to steer left or right or change altitude for your final approach. The little "bug" that moves around the compass links to your autopilot to activate your autopilot roll servo to turn the airplane by moving the ailerons.

I bought a big plastic tote full of untested avionics instruments early this year for $100 on FB marketplace. There were about 25 pieces, they sold pretty quick on eBay for $50 to $500 each as untested parts units.

Where I live in Canada it’s against the law to go into store dumpsters. Most are locked behind gates etc. It’s such a shame that stuff gets thrown out. I bought a $200 gel mattress topper at Walmart but it made my back worse. I returned it & they just throw it out. I only used it for 3 days, it was in a cover then covered by a mattress cover & bottom sheet.

those two small leg pieces you tossed back in the dumpster are worth about five a piece . would be nice of you if you've taken them to the goodwill or some place like that . lots of wood workers would use those legs for a project . i would've gladly accepted those two wood pieces and if i were still healthy enough i'd be dumpster diving myself :)) .

Since it does not have a serviceable tag and no trace-ability it would have to be sent to a repair shop rated for that particular part to be tested and most likely be repaired. If the glass was cracked that will have to be repaired prior to issuing an 8130. Probably cost couple thousand to recertify and fix if someone still does it. That piece is almost certainly a decoration only. A decoration that IMO is worth about $150...lol. Always buy used airplane parts for decorative purposes only. That unit is probably pre RVSM and pre ADS-B. Making it unusable.
