Pelican Point, Namibia, is home to a massive Cape Fur seal colony due to our huge amount of fish in the ocean. Ten thousands of seals reside at the Skeleton Coast between Walvis Bay, Swakopmund all the way up to Angola. With an active fishing industry around, we encounter a lot of discarded old fishing nets and fishing line, often carelessly thrown into the ocean, a typical symptom of climate change and human impact on our pristine environment. Seals are incredibly playful and often end up stuck in a piece of ocean pollution.
Luckily Antoine and Naude from Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) found this big seal bull on time. They caught it with their custom build net, cut it loose with their faithful Leatherman tool, and he could run off to his friends. 🦭

The down side of this is that some morally reprehensible people will create problems for animals e.g. put packing straps on seals and then record themselves being the heroes and making the claim to helping animals so as to generate revenue, please be careful. I am not suggesting these men are doing this but the incentive structure is such that it is a possibility, hope you understand.

On the ocean, you usually got the problem that the companies don't want to pay high wages so they pay the cheapest and least educated workers on the planet to do it. They get hardly any money and give even less of a shit about their job, the ocean or its inhabitants. They only care about the check they can send home to feed their kids. But the vast majority of plastic in the oceans comes from 10 rivers in India and South-East-Asia. Again, because people are too poor to care about anything but their own survival, because large corporations want to make even more money...

Oh, it could be done. But the problem are not the individuals. 90% of all types of pollution are produced by 100 companies in the whole world. Just 100. It could be stopped if there were better laws forcing companies to not just throw away waste and garbage. But these companies have money, and with that they pay politicians to make laws that don't hurt them. And in some places like USA it's perfectly legal to do that publically.

The seal in my cove is HUGE twice this one’s size and I worry about him/her. The fishermen cast and drag their line around the seal with not a worry. The boaters zoom around with not a worry. She/he looks happy for now. Luckily Cape Cod is a seasonal place and I think Sparky leaves in the winter time, its been 3 summers of survival now that we know of. Everyone swims in the cove with him and his occasional friends and the seals have never bothered anyone. We do not interact or feed them just enjoy the show.

He is a big, strong, smart seal. He knew enough to try to back out of the net initially instead of charging forward. Nice job guys.
