Seal's Face Covered in Gill Net

Another great example why gill nets are illegal in Namibia and many other countries. It is a known fact that gill nets cause immense suffering and, once caught, do not let any animal get away, even if the animal is not the targeted catch. Gill nets are designed to do this. Countless dolphins, seals, turtles, fish and other marine animals are losing their lives as collateral damage of the fishing industry.
The rescuers have a difficult task - they need to peel gill net out of the seal's mouth. They know they have to hurt the animal to free it and that they will be exposed to the dangerous teeth of a cornered seal. It is a complicated rescue but she is an amazing patient and the team shows great team work when they slowly peel piece after piece of gill net out of her face. the rescue takes longer than the usual catch and cut approach, but eventually she is free to go back to the ocean to continue her life.
Denzil hurt his finger when operating our new plastic recycling machines. He needed 5 stitches, but by now he is as good as new. Nothing gets "The Flash" down. 🦭

There is a small percentage of seals who are that calm even when a rescue takes longer and get's painful. When a seal is so calm I always wonder why it acts like that. Is it calm because it knows they are here to help, or is it already very weak and ill and gave up on life?

Agreed! I imagine we see 1/10th of the rescues. It is far more important to free these creatures from the entanglements, than for us to see the whole process from stalk to release. I imagine just the editing and posting time takes hours - and the KZbin audience sees new rescues daily, which shows your dedication to helping these animals. I can’t imagine the carnage we would see on those beaches if the OCN Team wasn’t on duty. How many other beaches world wide have entanglements….without a dedicated team of rescuers?

It may be that somehow repeated 'free-ings' of otherwise unharmed animals are communicated around the seal population so, at the least, they may be less frightened by the experience. In time, it could become 'the place to come' for line trapped seals. An evolutionary leap, of human / animal symbiosis, just speeded up.

The people hired to replace the people sacked for not turning on their cameras would like it to be known they have just been sacked. Rescues will now be done differently and at great expense by "Ralph the Wonder Llama".

How good and patient was this seal during the whole operation. I know you boys can never be too careful, but it looks like you could actually even have done this without the net. Well done boys!

This would have to be the best you've done so far. You can see gratitude in her eyes and her calmness and patience. Bless you all❣️. I hope she survives the 'harvests'. Over here they've begun a wild horses cull in the Alpine high country... All these precious animals being killed because there are "too many" well... There's far too many humans on this planet and it's ironic that humans are the sole culprits creating the worst destruction to the planet!!!!!!

The dedication of each team member is so commendable. Inspite of having injury, saving the seals is still top priority. No one seems to be a diva but works harmoniously with total trust, respect for each other. Keep up your work and may God bless all of you and your love ones and keep you from harm and danger at all times.

Hi Guys, i hear almost everywhere about Gill nets etc.. IF you have the time and want to do it. Maybe do a little educational Video about teh entanglements (Which are illegal like Gill net and which are legal) mabye show the difference between a gill net and a "normal" net. Also maybe a state of your work what projects are on the horizon hows it going. All that in one or maybe more videos. Maybe when theres a storm and you cant do rescues just an idea.

Denzil I'm so SORRY for being blind & not paying attention... I thought I picked up everything & was paying attention but apparently not. This morning I was reading some comments & allot of people were commenting about your hand or injury... & I was clueless. 🤔 So I came back to watched it again & sure enough... you were injured... I'm hoping all is well & I will watch better!! All of you are GOOD PEOPLE DOING PRECIOUS WORK... but also dangerous work with LIVE SEALS who don't understand what you're doing plus grouchy cus from having garbage tied around them. I am so glad you do an important job & I hate bad news BUT IT'S IMPORTANT & I really hope you're doing well, you're hand is well, looks & is feeling much better! 😊👍🏻🐾❤🐾💫

While I do enjoy the race and the catch, the important part is saving the seal. When you got the net off her mouth she opened her jaws and then closed her mouth and let you continue to work, I think she knew you were helping
