In this movie, the alignment and the violent solar flares cause the sudden heating of the Earth's core, and cause the disintegration of the Earth's crust the holds the land surface in its place.

@@yamatomushashi5583 I'm no scientist, but the Earth's crust can be anywhere from 12 to 50 miles thick, and the mantle beneath it is 1800 miles thick. If the core got hot enough to radiate heat through the entire mantle and make it hotter to melt the earth's crust and make it thinner, and bear in mind the surface area of the mantle would get exponentially larger as a result and provide even more heat dissipation, the earth would no longer be inhabitable. Heck, the temperature at the ocean floor is only slightly above freezing. In order to overcome that and melt through the rest of the crust, it would have to boil away the entire ocean otherwise the heat would dissipate, and Global Temperatures would be unbearable.

This is why I'm not worried if 2012 ever happens in the future - the fact that the airport was the last major infrastructure to be utterly destroyed shows how genius our architects and engineers are modernly. I mean, the way LA is designed (not sure about other areas) shows how the crucial exit points of a city are designed to fail last while the non-essential areas such as residential homes (who is buying homes nowadays? all these homes were bought years ago for $20 and a 3-month mortgage) and the 405 were given less priority. If 2012 were to happen again, whether it's next year or in 100 years, I think humanity as a whole is ready. Or at least LA.

This scene: *acts like a video game full of QTE's and clearing a path exactly when they need to be there and no longer* Campy, corny, over the top fun Also this scene: *shows little girl crying at the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people at once in the middle of said campiness* What the hell, movie? Pick a tone. You're either campy and over the top or you're serious and dramatic. You can't be both at the same time. I love this movie as one of my guilty pleasures, but there are some moments in it where it acts like they want you to feel bad, even though they spent they last 10 mins showing you nothing but over the top, campy, corny scenes that feel like a VR ride, but yes, let's all take a breather in the middle of that to mourn the many lives that are lost in the chaos. We can do one or we can do the other, but humans are not capable of doing both at the same time.
