I did not know Tom Bodett restored VWs. Your voice, accent, tone and rhythm, match Tom’s. Your writing style, sensibilities, and philosophy, have a strong correlation with Tom’s. Especially the monologues that bookend the show. Even the channels name, Haptic Garage, evokes a thoughtful, folksy, intellectual, approach. Thanks for posting.

On the distributor drive part of video - I have done that a couple times myself. So - I took a spare dist. - gutted it - took off o-ring - I use it as my engine build dist. Only !!!! When ready - just pull it - no mess no fuss . Sorry for all the comments during each video - as see things - I remember my mis haps or ideas I had on similar things !!!! Keep up the good work.

Those carbs work fine....as long as you do the jetting. make sure that main is somewhere lik 130 or 135 on a stock 1600. Need to jet them usually 55 on the idle jet. one you took out on the side. should have a jet sizing tool too sometimes they are redrilled.
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Have to admit I don't know what jets are in it- I'll be doing some follow up tasks after a few miles that include another look at the carb. I'll keep these sizes in mind.

That little piece in the needle and seat is why you NEED a fuel filter right near the carb. stuff like that comes out of the metal fuel hoses and causes major problems.

Hurricane Ian destroyed it and I bought a 1969 fastback been waiting videos and doing most of my work myself. Thanks for your help. Rocker arm covers on order should be done by Friday god willing. Das hat was, SUPER Video. Jetzt hab ich gesehen was alles an meinem Motor fehlt.

Great job on the engine tins; many people throw away some of them, including the thermostat system and the flaps. I run mine with everything. I believe running everything OEM and as the factory intended is the best for a street driven car. Btw; the copper nuts are a good idea on the exhaust system studs; they seem to not seize due to heat induced corrosion.

I agree Vayabroder, but have to admit this blower housing didn't have provisions for the flaps. I feel like I can tell they aren't there as the engine struggles to warm up. Thanks for the info on the copper nuts- I've been a little suspicious of their quality. I did use copper antiseize so hopefully that does the trick. Thanks for watching!

I'm quite sure I'll have to refer to this video in the near future what with all of it's content. Thank you once again! I hope you do some maintenance on the transmission i.e. replacing bushings, seals, gaskets and adjustments. I think the spring washers are better than the modern lock washers. The spring type washers tend to retain their wavy shape. Just sayin!

Thanks Mofoco, what a nice thing to say! I'm happy to share and I hope you get to do these tasks soon- it's a lot of fun! I don't have any current plans for the bus transaxle, but there will be some cleanup and seal replacement on the bug transaxle when we resume the Dweezil project...cracked nose cone, etc... I agree about the spring washers; they provide binding tension without biting into the metal. Unfortunately, I've recently come across a batch of spring washers that flatten as soon as they are tightened. Sheesh. Anyway, Merry Christmas and thanks for watching!

Your stuff is head and shoulders above everything else on the KZbin machine. I’m pretty sure that you’re in Florida, but I gotta ask. Do you not run a thermostat and flaps?
@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike! You are correct- I'm in Florida. I like your question... this is the kind of thing I love to geek out about. I think the engine is better off warming up faster with the thermostat and flaps installed in an original blower housing. Florida is warm but the relevant temps are engine temps and significantly higher than ambient. For this project, I've taken a different approach to use the parts available. The biggest compromise has been the aftermarket blower housing with its many problems- including no provision for flaps. I've since found a couple proper housings that may be used if this engine gets some attention in the future. Thanks for the question and for checking out the video!

Great question Bearded G! The silicon valve cover gaskets didn't work this time. They expanded a little after running the engine, so they no longer fit after checking the valves. Perhaps gluing them to the covers would have prevented that, or maybe a different brand would worked better. This time I simply went back to quality cork gaskets sealed to the cover with 3M gasket adhesive and it is working great as always. Tried and true.

@HapticGarage
@HapticGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, I'm glad you found the parts! I see what you're thinking- feels like one of those "go ahead and do it so it's done" situations. I've never converted a 6V vehicle to 12V, and the ones I have were 12V from the factory. It seems like a big expensive job that has benefits but is often a band-aid for old wires and corroded contacts. I'd suggest starting there; solder in new wires where needed, replace connectors that are corroded or damaged, spray contact cleaner into switches, and clean up any ground connection you find. Chances are you'll find some grounds that could use a wire brush and a dab of dielectric grease. Best thing? These efforts are almost free and will still be worthwhile should you complete the upgrade. Good luck with whatever you choose and let us know how it goes!

Nice video. The SVDA distributor you're using uses a different timing set method then what you used. You used the 009 method. For initial start up it's fine but it's going to be retarded and not have any power. Pull and plug the vacuum hose and set for 28-32° at 3000rpm. Then plug vacuum back in and make sure it's not going over 40-44° at 3000rpm. Every engine is a little different in what it likes but you'll tell if it's too far retarded by the flat spot on takeoff because of it.
