i tried DCI 4k it seems to be only a crop in sensor so to me not very interresting i prefer do that in my editing software. why crop into sensor ? normally it should add more horizontal resolution@@LeeZavitz

I'm very happy with the update: touch menu free-up many custom buttons for more things and changing things fast, focus breathing compensation that I don't need with my current lens set but amazing nonetheless, cleaner view of the screen with things pushed to the edges, shutter closed down for sensor-protection when the camera is turned off under the "anti-dust function", photo authentication, Creator's App support. Couldn't care less about DCI 24fps also the biggest cons remains: No Animal/Bird Eye AF.

Anyone with A7SIII experiencing an ISO bug (Native ISO remap to 80 and 1600) which results in a very noisy ProRes Raw footage after 3.0 update when recording in PRORES RAW with NINJA V (or any other bug after 3.0 update), I just spoke with a Sony rep on the phone. He said they had very few people contact them with this issue, and they are compiling evidence. So please go to Sony Support in your country (I'm in the US), contact the support (I did it through chat), describe the problem, and make them create a support ticket (don't get satisfied with their default troubleshooting attempts). The rep also said that having a well-made video demonstrating the problem is a big plus!

Sony made my camera worse in some ways with this update. The autofocus doesn’t feel the same, H265 in 60p no longer reduces file sizes by half, no way to remove all distractions from the screen while shooting, and the X to get out of touch focus is only there on the screen with the most distractions. Super annoying. I’m regretting updating, despite the new features.

Guess it's easier to update on windows. Step 1: Launch update program. Step 2: Turn on and plug in camera with a USB cable and click Next. That's it. I do want me one of those 16" Macbook Pros at some point, they are so nice.

There are some bugs in the new firmware... When shooting prores raw, iso 1600 exposes like 12800. Iso 640 looks like 5000 and you can't go down froim there. Hdmi raw output also becomes corrupted when dci 4k mode is selected. 😬

Dang, I’ve never tried the ProRes raw output. I’ll have to see if I have an issue. All the issues people say they are having I haven’t experienced. But I haven’t tried ProRes raw. Outside of that the camera has been running great

Yeah, I hope someone at sony hears about it soon to get it fixed. Other than that I would have also hoped for variable shutter and getting rid of temporal NR at iso 12800 to be able to stabilize low light footage with gyroflow. That's what I use RAW for. 😁

It’s only the older Sony cameras. The a7iv you can do right from sd card. But I agree it’s super annoying and no other camera is updated this way. But I can also put some blame on macOS and how locked down it is in Apple silicon

The update caused my Bluetooth/Wi-Fi unit to malfunction, which is why they pulled the A1 update. It also seems to have removed the "PC remote function" which iirc is what allowed you to connect to a DJI Ronin gimbal

After v3.00 update for sony a7iv have the option to purchase custom gridlines. But how are custom gridlines installed and imported into c1-c4 (Png files) create them? Purchase/download? Is there a tutorial on how to do this because i cant find any method/instructions of/about installing custom gridlines. I feel custom gridlines will help with framing and work flow for certain social media apps, like 4:5 5:4 and 9:16 16:9 while remaining in the full sensor 3:2 resolution Great content, love your work, very informative, dont stop !!!

I looked into the whole gridline thing and it seems really focused on photographers that need that option. It’s so weird it wouldn’t just be part of the new firmware because some cameras like zve1,fx30,a6700 come with grind lines built in (not custom just pre made) I’m not a huge fan of the micro transaction updates ether. We pay so much for these cameras a little software tweak shouldn’t cost anything honestly

Does anyone know how much the camera crops in now to compensate for focus breathing? All the reports are that the crop in is 'significant' but no one is putting a figure or % on it. It would be great to know before deciding whether the update is worth it or whether to stick with things as they are. Accepting a permanent crop-in to compensate for those few times when focus breathing is actually objectionable is a decision that requires a bit more info, I think. Touch-screen updates and access to the Create app sound nice, but are they worth it?

It crops into about 1.1-1.11x so not much. But that said. You mention “permanent crop”. You can turn it on or off. It’s not permanent.

I have an important question. Before the new update, when I changed the AF from the lens to the MF ( mode in the video mode ), "PEAK" appeared with the red color that I had previously determined, and again when I changed the focus from the lens to the AF mode, "PEAK" was turned off . But after the update, when I turn on "PEAK" and put the lens in automatic mode, "PEAK" remains and Don't be off . where is the problem from ?

focus breathing compensation is not supported in nearly 50% of their lenses. In this respect their new feature is literally half baked. This was the most important feature. I went through the update on this which is a lot of work as they don't save your settings only to discover that I would not get this feature. I am an underwater cinematographer and macro filming would really benefit from this feature. Furthermore the touch interface does not help me as the camera is in a housing. 24 fps is not great for underwater film making as we have to shoot at higher frame rates which to be able capture moving marine life. Typically, filming is at 60 fps but delivered at 30 fps. Have you heard anything about when they would support focus breathing compensation on the other lenses?

I have no idea why some lenses support and some don’t, I assume it’s probably based off if the lens was built with intention for it to work with focus breathing compensation. But even saying that is iffy because some lenses are way older than this technology. So I have no idea honestly

I am hoping it involves a lens firmware update to work better with continuous Autofocus. Interestingly, in a very brief look at the lenses that had lens firmware updates, they appeared to be the those that did support breathing compensation with versions 2 or 3. Whereas, the firmware for the 3 lenses I have are still at version 0.1 and the Sony A7siii firmware 3.0 updates.

Sony pulled the update on the a1 due to BT Wifi unit not working. They might have done the same to the a7S3 because I could not update to the v3.0 after the upgrade to v2.15.

Well It depends on if you are using an a7siii as a b-cam and fx6 or Venice as a a-cam shooting in dci. Now you can match the same aspect ratio. I wouldn’t say much better but it’s useful for people that might need it

When I activate raw output over HDMI, ISO 1600 becomes equivalent to what ISO 12,800 would normally be in terms of exposure and noise. ISO 640 is equivalent to ISO 5000. Haven’t tried my Ninja V, but I’ve encountered issues. The autofocus doesn’t seem as good, H265 doesn’t reduce file sizes anymore, and you can’t remove distractions fully from the screen. It’s super annoying that they removed features.

@@LeeZavitzits a well known issue...the Sony a7iv has eye AF issues...it focuses on eyelashes and brows...u can check just by googling "Sony A7iv Eye AF issues", there are so many complaints its insane. Using the tamron 35-150 and a7 IV and can't get a portrait eye AF right cause of the faulty hardware and firmware...glad urs is not faulty...but there are loads that are, just do a quick search on Google

I ask about this at a Sony thing and apparently it’s super difficult to add extra allotments that take up internal storage in the firmware. Even just adding small software tweaks sometimes require almost fully recoding it too. This is why we rarely see new features added. But I get it. Would be nice to have everything the newer cameras have.

This update has not fixed the main problem of a7s III (same as FX3) - terrible built-in-camera Noise Reduction at high ISO in video, which eats detail and turns picture into mushy mush. Remarkably, in the FX6 camera, they made it possible to control the noise reduction level, up to complete turning it off, and the NR-algorithm itself very good, because it suppresses only chroma noise but not luma, so it retains details kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2bbppKKibWgfLc I would like to see the same thing added to the a7s III and am even willing to pay $500 or even more for this update, but alas, Sony is unlikely to hear me. By the way, many other manufacturers (Panasonic, Nikon, Fujifilm) allows us to control NR-level in video mode in their cameras, only the Sony stubbornly refuses to give us this possibility.

This is not the firmware update i was looking for. I don't find any of the features particularly good. Why can Sony not add user LUTs, Shutter Angle, Animal Eye AF (to make it on par with the zv-1 LoL). Focus breathing only works for Sony lenses, and can be avoided if pulling focus manually. The main difference most will find is having to set the camera up from scratch!
