One of my (least) favorite questions/bits of advice I tend to get is "Are you still pulling? or "Just don't pull". All I can think when someone says this is "if it was as easy as just stopping, don't you think I would've by now?" and "If you have to ask if I'm still pulling, I probably am". And, these come from some of my closest relatives and friends. Especially my grandma.

I'm newly diagnosed with trich. I not only have that, but compulsive hair cutting issues. I pull at my facial hair, but the hair on my head, I have manic phases where I just cut chunks out of my hair. I've watched your channel since before I was diagnosed, and you made me feel like I wasn't as alone. I'm currently medicated for my troubles, but I'm still working towards happiness and self acceptance. Your channel gives me hope because I know I'm not the only one.

I don't have Trich and I don't know anyone who is having Trich (or at least they don't tell me), but I still love to watch your videos! It took me quite a long time to understand Trich and all the issues it brings along but now I understand because of you. I am very grateful that if someone comes up to me and tells me they had Trich, I won't be one of the hundreds asking "Why don't you just stop?" or saying "Whatever, it's just hair." These were my questions and thoughts I had when I found your channel. Thank you so much for your work of educating people. Your work and effort is really important to destruct stigmas and misunderstandings leading to feelings being hurt and minds starting to collapse. Maybe you could do a video for the friends and families of Trichsters and tell them what they could do to be supportive and helpful and what kind of reactions you would find encouraging when talking about your condition. You seem very happy in this video. Although it is ok if you are unhappy and showing that in your videos, it's really nice to see you smiling and more cheerful :) have a nice day, Beckie, and thank you

Hi Becca, I just came across your videos and want to say how greatful I am for you sharing your journey so bravely. I am a mother of a 10 year old daughter who has been diagnosed with Trich this past year. I am nearing my senior year in my own journey toward my Bachelors degrees psychology, counseling, and life coaching and it has been extremely difficult to watch my beautiful girl feel so anxious that she has pulled all her eyelashes, a large bald spot at the back of her head, moving on to her eyebrows and even her arm and leg hairs. I aim to understand her, I've struggled with anxiety before and know how it feels to be out of control so I hope this can help me realize where she's coming from. Thank you for sharing these tips and your journey. I believe you will help me understand my sweet little love, to help her stand up against the bullies, and be able to use this struggle; as you have, to help others. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward to your insight.

I just want to say a big thank you because with out you I think I wouldn't have made it. I've had trich when I was a toddler because my mum use to just twiddle strands of it, and I caught on. it got to a very depressing part of were I was so upset and angry I just pulled and pulled, lucky didn't and up with bald patches. I discovered I had trich through you and I never knew some one else pulled their hair too, it was a big sweep off my shoulder and knowing I wasn't in this alone. I showed two videos to my form in school about trich (your interview with the last from America and hurtful comments ) and I've had so much support since! my parents don't really believe it exist and chooses to ignore it and call it off as a bad habit. but thank you so much, you are my idol and especially some one I look up to x

Alekzandra T Sounds like college doesn't agree with you or vice versa. I realised it was my social anxiety that was causing my trich, and it got much better straight away. I knew a guy who used to get migranes at work. Changed jobs, no more migranes; ) Sometimes it's that simple. Though usually not so much, but you can break it down and fix the underlying issues. All the best.

I got trich when I was only 7. My parents had no clue what it was, and they weren't the nicest when I kept doing it. They weren't very supportive because they were telling me the cold hard truth. I'm going to get bullied about it. I went to my pediatrician, and she knew what it was, and I got diagnosed. It was hard, but I didn't get made fun of. My doctor got me a counselor, who is very, very nice and supportive. I've never gone to a specialist, because I don't like them. And my parents are a lot more supportive, I've gotten into art and now having it for 6 years, I'm doing a lot better. ☺

Becky I am a portuguese woman, 35 years old, and I suffer from trichotillomanie since I was 11. I am struggling since then with this disease. In the beginning there was no internet available...by the time you were born. I went though to some doctors who did not know at all what trich was... so frustrating... and due to that I had problems explaining to my family why was I doing such a thing, and why could I not stop it. When I was 18 probably, I searched for the first time in the internet, and I found the first info about it. I made everyone at home read it. At the age of 23 I had to shave my head for the first time. I kept it short for a year and let it grow again: did not pull for 12 months and got married with a beautiful hair. Suddenly trich came back... and have cut my hair very short. Now, after 12 years, my daughter asked me to let it grow, and it was a disaster... trich won and I had to shave it with gilette again. I see so many damage... i also happen to have a lot of white hair only on the spots I pull the most... I started therapy after 24 years of pulling... on a foreign country, because I moved to Belgium 4 years ago, working full time, and with 2 daughters, but I will not allow trich to win from me. thank you for your journal! thank you for sharing a problem that so deeply affects the life of children, teenagers, adults...

I've had trich for 11 years and I've gone through the good and the terrible phases. I couldn't find anything that helped me. Nothing was working and I started to give up. Then I found hypnotherapy. Now I know it sounds crazy and weird (I thought that before I tried it) and it's changing my life. I didn't think anything was going to be able to help me. This was a last resort and it's helping so much! If you want to try anything to get your trich to be better and hopefully eventually go away forever, try it!! Of course I still pull but my anxiety is almost never noticeable, I'm barely pulling anymore. It's so crazy. I've never been more happy in my life. I can feel my trich going away. I promise you, it's working for me. -Trich Fighter

to add to your advice, i found that scratching my head is really helpful when i feel super triggered. also, pulling grapes off of their stems is really satisfying and similar to hair pulling so that helps when i feel like i'm about to start pulling again.

I haven't even thought about this topic in years. I stopped pulling in 2012 (or seventh grade for me) and while I have occasional anxiety bouts that lead to a little bit of pulling, it is not at all common and I am beyond grateful that that addiction and compulsion is out of my life. Something that helped me was "limiting" myself each day, almost like a diet, until I sort of weaned myself off of the need to pull. If that makes sense. This is a beautiful video and as I am currently going through a more anxious period it's so comforting to know this is something other people deal with every day. 🖤

I was trying to find someone that talks about thric and I'm really glad I found this. I'm crying right now. I started several years ago, I don't remember exactly when or why, I just remember my school partners laughing at me because I had had a huge hole in my head. I used to use a lot of things in my head to hide it. That was back in 2012. Then suddenly it stopped. I stopped doing it. One year ago I finished the university and I'm struggling to get a job. During my thesis, I remember pulling my hair a little bit, I didn't know that I was starting again. Now I've cut my hair a lot of times, I stopped seeing my friends because I know or I think they'll stare at my hair and my head. I look at the mirror and I hate me for doing me that. I've tried a lot things. I'm afraid about getting psychological help, I'm just afraid and ashamed, I can't even think about me saying to the doctor "I am here because I pull my hair off and I want to stop". I've told my boyfriend, he said that I don't have to tell a third person my problem to stop, that I have to work with my shit and that's it. I just want to stop. I just want to look again like I was looking 4 years ago. And I want to stop pulling my hair for good.

For school, they stopped letting me bring in stress balls and tangles because "they were distracting to other students" (what was more distracting was that the left half of the back of my head was completely bald). Yes, it is pretty much extreme upset/involuntary feelings caused by normal sounds. Usually feelings of rage that you can't control. In general it gets more severe over time and there is no proven effective treatment. But these tips in my opinion apply to Misophonia as well. Mine is so severe that I have a physical response of boxing my ears, which is not typical except in extreme cases. I am damaging my hearing a bit. Acceptance has been the hardest part.

I think my pulling started when I was younger due to extreme stress and it never really went away. I pull in two particular areas and by using headbands and clips, I am able to keep the hair out of my face and resist the urge to pull more easily. I even use colored root spray that disguises the thin spots but also makes the hair thicker and a little stiff so it feels bad to the touch and stops me from pulling. Also, I stopped eating sugar and decrease my caffeine. I notice when I get very hungry, have too much coffee, or eat too much sugar the urge comes back. You can try different things to see if the urge lessens... experiment with hair styles and techniques. I can tell you after doing low carb and trying different styles, my thin spots are growing back. After 23 years of pulling, it will never grow back completely but it's better than it was before!
@crafter2398 жыл бұрын
a small, simple tip from a 16 year old going through high school for the first time, you don't really owe anything to anyone. If something is stressing you out at night and causing you a lot of worry don't be afraid to cancel plans with friends. Obviously you should still try though, but for example my friend really wanted to be in a talent show with me and I stayed up at night pulling my hair and worrying about it until I had to cancel on him, and in the end it was fine. Stuff like that can blow over quickly and it's not always worth loosing hair over. And with homework I found that teachers understand a lot more than you think they would and are very helpful. Obviously try, a lot of other kids have other things going on that inhibit them but don't be afraid to talk to your teacher about what is going on. They aren't chatty Cathy's, and being a teacher's pet my entire life I know that teachers even enjoy the company of the so-called 'troubled' kids, just don't treat them like magic evil aliens. Anyway, I've rambled haha. Great video Beckie, I highly appreciate tips going out to kids my age ^U^

I'm 33, so this might not be useful to most of you, but.. I've been pulling out my beard/moustache either with my hands or teeth since I could grow a beard. I went on a month long kayaking trip recently (Mostly by myself) and grew a beard for the first time. I realised that my trigger was stress and social anxiety. I have kept the beard for the last 5months, though still picking at it, but definitely not as much. My advice... understand why and then you'll be more self aware of when you're doing it and can address the stress. Or turn into a hermit, I think that would work for me.

Hi there :) I'm almost 18 now and I've had trich since I was 8 and some periods it's worst than usual and I still hope it will stop somehow and someday. I've told so many times to my parents that I'm not "okay" but they just don't listen and they don't even try to understand and like you said "some people will never understand what you're going through". Some days I think to just go to the psychologist but I can't do that to my parents and family without saying anything... But on the other hand I think that they deserve it because they don't really help me. I've never shaved my head but that's not a good moment for me and so my head is bold and people can see it and I'm so ashamed of it. I don't want to shave because I'm in high school and people would talk and I can't go through this again. I hope one day it will stop somehow and that I'll find a way to be okay and to stop hurting myself like that. I'm with everyone that's suffering of trich and I support you. You're not alone.

For me personally, what's hard is that the support that I get from my family is occasionally half-assed. For example, when someone says one thing and does something else. One day my mother might be 100% supportive of me, but the next day she might become a totally different person and say really negative, hurtful things about my Trichotillomania and Dermatillomania. It confuses me greatly, and hurts me, but I mostly shrug it off because she just doesn't understand (as much as she says that she wants to). I feel like people who don't suffer from BFRB's just DON'T understand them. Its aggravating, especially when she (as I said previously) IS supportive of me and makes me feel great about myself, but then something might trigger her/anger hurt/change her mood, and she'll take it all back. So I greatly appreciate the community that Beckie has built. My mother might not understand anything of this sort, but you guys do. Some people could be constantly beaten over the head with statements like "It's a lifelong illness" or "NO, I can't just STOP pulling" and you could say it over and over and over again, and they still wouldn't get it through their heads. So thanks for being a sort of public figure for people who don't have any support.

I go through bouts of pulling my hair out generally when I'm dealing with anxiety. I don't know if that would be considered the same thing, but I'm definitely going to try those tangles.

I've had Trich for a few years now, but this vid was still useful, so thanks Becca! :) For anxiety, I would also add that St. John's Wort has been seen to help anxiety, mood, and depression, if you'd like to try it. I've had it have a big impact on me (but not always positive so try and see what works for you).

I have a problem with running my fingers through my hair and that in turn pulls hair out of my head, so I took yarn and tied strands to a hair tie. It's the same feeling as hair because it tangles. I made two. One I keep in my purse and one at home. It definitely helps with my panic disorder too

What's helps me stop pulling is an acrylic nail polish! I did it for several years, the hair was grown up. But without it I return to pull but less!

I have ADD and Silly Putty helps me a lot in classes. It could be an option for Trichotillomania.

Derm / I would use this advice for derm, but a lot of the time I subconsciously pick at my skin. I've wrecked my finger tips from the stress of exams, and I hate it because I know I'm doing it and I want to stop but I just don't. I feel so weird.

One thing that helps me a lot to keep my hands occupied is playing with a balloon filled with flour. It's so soft and nice to the touch! And I usually put a rubber band or a piece of thread on it so I can tie it to my middle finger, that way it's always there and I'm not able to use my hand to pull Hope it helps someone as well 😊

Thanks for your videos, I have found putting strips on my index fingers made it impossible to pull hair but I love the tangles too

Washing my hair helps me. Over-washing is bad so I wouldn't recommend that but I'm so much less tempted to pull when I have clean damp hair. Also, as dorky and repetitive as it sounds exercise helps too. It's really hard to pull when you are working out and it also releases endorphins. That good feeling helps me not pull as much.

people tend to make fun of me bc of the way I look . I dont tell people about my trich so everyone loves making assumptions and saying them out loud
