Hugelkultur. A Way of Filling Beds on a Budget.

While putting together the first bed on the new homestead, the idea came to me to save as much soil as possible by using the age old method of Hugelkultur. Was it perfect, NO. But it was quick and I already had plenty of dead trees to use for filler.
Would you or have you ever used this method?

That’s a nice looking bed! Why do you put the logs and sticks in the bottom first?

They act as a filler to save soil, they hold moisture and as they break down they add nutrients back into the soil. Traditionally you would have straw, leaf litter and various layers but I just had a dead tree I used.
