I repaired so many of these. When you lifted the metal plate that has all the screws you need to push the board down near the flex cable is soldered or you tear it like you did the first time you opened it. Also removing the board and battery with the copper back part helps not mess up the battery. My specialty was replacing the charging port because nobody on this island could do it.

The Random, Con is correct. To avoid water getting into the backlight you use adhesive around the glass. Why? If water is slipping by the glass it has a perfect route to go into the backlight layers due to water tension. Anyways the real reason they used adhesive is because of various advantages, not just because apple is greedy.

There isn't really any other way to take the batterys out on iPod Touches, there aren't any pull tabs and the adhesive is a bit overkill for such a small battery, he should have used a plastic tool though, you can sometimes slice through the layers of a battery if you use a metal tool and that can be pretty dangerous.

Thank you for this video, Hugh. I recently had to lift up the rear seats in a car I bout a couple years ago. I found an 8 gb iPod touch under there. It was all grimy and dirty, but after a wipe down it cleaned up ok. I plugged in a charger I had. At first it didn't do anything. I waited for it to charge up enough to power up, but nothing. Eventually I unplugged the charger, and pushed it in and out of the charger port, wiggling it as I did. Eventually it powered up, but as soon as I unplug it, it shuts down. I was looking to see how hard it would be to change the battery. This video has shown me that it's not worth it. If I want to use it, I will have it plugged in, in my car or something.

This happened to me as well! When I took the cable out it had a small mark on the cable inside the ribbon. I found out that it was long screw damage witch was very weird because I knew I had used the correct screw. I replaced the cable and didn'd screw in the screw above the cable, and it worked. I screw in the screw as much as I could before it got tight, and it worked fine. So I believe Apple used a screw that's to long for the spot.
@danieleduca1241 Жыл бұрын
Which screw do you mean?

That doesn't make sense because if the screw were too long the iPod touch would have had that problem from the factory. Seeing that it they/it didn't, the length wasn't an issue.

as an general tip which I do not see very often (and honestly I dont know why...): Before trying to remove the battery for example, get an small syringe and draw up some ethanol... Even normal hand disinfection fluid will do it. Just put a litte bit on every side of the battery. wait 1-2 mins and the ethanol will start to make the gluestripes soft. You can than lift one side up a little bit and again put some fluid underneath it. Doing it like this will let you remove any glued part as smooth as possible. And dont think too much about, that ethanol could damage anything. Thats not the case. Anything else used in such devices does withstand it really well.

(I do microsoldering on iphones etc) I'll just start by letting you know that the 2 holes behind the power button you need to keep those intact as theres a wire that runs just above or below the holes so most likely you tore it when you assembled it. Try an 8+ I ripped the Home Button's flex whilst transplanting it from the broken screen. The cable is honestly about 2mm wide, the connector is tightly secured and the entire flex is adhesived to the chassis. Prying from the chassis will rip it, like I did. Now here's the kicker, Apple will not sell home buttons. The security logic is built into them and I guess it could circumvent their Touch ID security. The only solution is to buy a reproduction home button that connects as some sort of bluetooth device? Not ideal... It's going in the draw for now, same as your Ipod did in 2018. Maybe i'll come back to it in 2022 and break even more of it...

The repair difficulty on this device is about a 6 out of 10. With a little practice, you dont need to remove the mainboard to replace the screen. The pcb has some elasticity to it and as long as certain connections are freed up, it can be bent slightly to reconnect the digitizer connection much more easily. Unfortunately you did a lot more work than was necessary. Practice makes perfect definitely.

These are a walk in the park to repair. I've repaired hundreds of them. The hardest part was getting bent ones sealed back up properly. Pull the WiFi cable away from the white plastic thing it's stuck to. Once that's done, it will allow you to fully pull the motherboard away on an angle from the housing. Just enough to get a full finger behind it to snap in the digitizer cable.

Somehow I managed to replace the screen on it while in high school. I used normal hairdrier to take it apart, also broke and replaced that flatflex cable, and didn't have good glue to keep new screen properly in place. But it worked. Definitely removed motherboard in process. I remember that thin strip of pcb keeping two halves together and bending it to take board out, luckily didn't break it
@BenEyah4 жыл бұрын
I've only ever done one of these, got it cheap back in the day so thought why not give it a go 'cause if I break it it's nothing much lost. For me though I didn't have a heat gun or anything so just brute forced it from a crack then picked the edges away, I used normal manicure tweezers to press the connector in which worked reasonably well for me 'cause I had to do it again for it after I sold it but I guess I was lucky 'cause I never had any issues with the power button after doing it. Think the most difficult apple device I've done was the original iPhone but that was 'cause it was the first thing I'd ever opened to actually repair with the tools you get with a screen and probably 'cause I was like 14-15 at the time

I don't know if you still solder stuff, or if you've gotten better equipment, bit those irons are crap. I can recommend a TS-80, with default chiseltip, as long as you flux it's excellent on even smaller connections, direct heating in the tip, no issues like in this video were it couldn't transfer because the tip was too thin and then didn't have enough thermal mass...!

The soldering points on the cable that the power button is attached to is touching together against metal or the frame of the ipod. It needs to be covered so the soldering points do not cross connect

It might be shorting on the metal frame. You should try adding kapton tape over the solder joints where the cable gets connected.

I did one of these back in 2014, it was tough but it worked no problem first time. I removed everything to get to it all same as you. Credit cards and heat to the chassis stop you mullering the battery.

Glad I found this video. I got my first haul of iPhones to practice repairs and the iPod 4th Gen looked so meek and simple I figured I'd pratice on that first. Then I saw this video. I'll now probably start with the iPhone 4 or 4s. Any suggestions on the most reliable vendor for gold plated/solid replacement chassis?

I highly recommend a TS100 solding iron. Its a amazing soldering iron and can output a lot of heat on things with many layers of copper

Piggy backing off my old comment, the ts100 would INSTANTLY melt those pads Hugh struggled on, even at a lower temperature. And it doesn't take 2-4 minutes to reach its full potential like those eBay 20 dollar cheapo kits do. It takes about 15 seconds from cold start to target temperature. And it recovers extremely fast after soldering a huge ground plane.

That is so weird! I have done screen repairs on an iPod Touch 4th gen before and I haven't had an issue with the power button... However I did have a home button issue with an iPhone 4 after replacing the screen and found out the issue was it needs to be seated in a certain way or the screen will clamp down on it and preventing it from being able to depress.

For the power button i have the same problem with my ipod touch first gen, try squeezing the back and the screen together then press the power button that works for me.

I am so thankful I did not try repairing one of these
