Survival Ponch 58 Pattern Shelter

Survival Ponch ground sheet shelter sleeping bag, what more can the 58 pattern Ponch give. Join me for episode 1 as I utilise this poncho in wet and windy weather. that brings back happy memories with that 58 poncho . great bit of kit in the day . ive used one as a basha shelter loads of times .even in 2ft of snow . those where the days 😂😂 .now im older i prefer a tent with better comfort and warmth lol atb kev

Plow point shelter is my go to setup for poncho camping as well. You can tie the hood to a tree or stick for signifiant gain of space. Still, this remains quite too short for integral coverage in case of a rain storm. Adding a bivy bag is a must do in this case. Nice poncho, thank you for sharing. Greetings from France.

I was in the army from 1986-92 and we were never taught to make a basha like that, if it was raining you would get wet and your kit would get wet also, the hood would be tied up not to let the rain in and it would be made as low as possible.

Yes low after making a shell scrape. I’ve made a few different configurations when needed. Great bit of kit but a major problem is condensation and you feel like a boil in the bag in summertime. Thanks for watching 👍

The British never issued a poncho iner, only the US did, that's why it is the US woodland DPM. The old 58 pattern feather sleeping bag used press studs to attach to the poncho.

Did you ever wash them? Mine needs a clean but they say just hand wash with not much soap

Yep hand wash these with none biological powder. Then you won’t light up if someone is looking in your direction with a night vision camera. Bio powder makes you shine white in the viewer! 🤣👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

The poncho you have is a later model 58 ptn. circa 90s. Ours ( 1980s), were a rubberised material with a wood toggle. Brass press studs as well as brass rings along all sides. The Base of the 58 bag had a webbing strip with poppers. These were designed to press stud one end of the poncho around , then press stud two sides of the poncho forming a bivvi bag. Tying off the hood. The end and the base of the 58 bag was a rubberised waterproof material. We shoved our roll mat inside the bag. Boots stayed on, as too belt order and Bundook. The 58 bag rolled up into an outer hood that doubled as a storm hood for the Bivvi system. The thing is, this sleeping system was never actually taught in training as it was designed for. Nowdays i use a new issue bag. its bigger, heavier, a sponge if damp and takes up a lot of space, but is warm. .

Lightweight Nylon Mk2 poncho in the vid. I had the original rubberised poncho but got it exchanged, 1982. I didn't remember if it had the snaps for the dossbag. The Mk3 poncho is reversible white/green.

Iv just got a poncho with the wooden toggles it also has 5 poppers in the middle near the bottom.. That clips onto a sleeping bag I also got

I buttoned one up once and used it as a bivy bag thankfully it never rained another time a made a shelter out of one by putting a stick up the hood and pegging out the 4 sides we squeezed in 2 of us
