I used to fasten the snaps when I wore my poncho, push my hands through the sides and it kept you drier instead of having the sides flapping open. I always thought it was a good bit of kit for the time but that was in the days before goretex etc

i was issued one of these in the early 90s and hated it, it was stiff and a bugger to fold up, while my mates (on the same kit issue) were issued the lightweight version. We never wore them ... they were always used as a shelter when in the field. (i must have sniffed too much gun oil, cause 30 years later i own 6-7 ponchos and use one regular on camping trips)

I find your videos addictive as it fills in information that nobody knew at the time. To find this stuff out now is amazing.

I've got one of those. Excellent piece of kit. Looks like new. Thanks for the video.

I managed to snag one of these in the '80s and this was way better than the water leaking '70's nylon useless kit. Well worth the extra weight. These must be rare now. Mine got nicked and never managed to find another one.

Always preferred the 62 pattern one to the later light weight one. Far more durable and kept you drier. Never used it as a poncho but only as a shelter.

Never used one of these but had a lot of run ins with the nylon poncho. RAMC casualty carry drills..place casualty in poncho. Grab a corner and gracefully carry the casualty with care and compassion over undulating ground ..... Nah... Drag casualty In a V shape with arse in full contact with the ground at all times. Patent airway been identified by the amount of swearing and moaning.. not much better on a stretcher either but they weighed more and we couldn't be arsed with the extra weight. Great video as always..

The cape carrier or poncho roll was colloquially referred to as a bum roll. We were expected to squeeze not only the later lightweight nylon poncho but also the full NBC suit including boots inside it, somehow, and I don't remember ever being issued utility straps. The best solution was to get a buckshee bum roll and join the 2 together.

In the 80's, BAOR we got issued a second bum-roll to carry NBC kit as part of our role as Airmobile trials battalion.

@@richthompson1234 Forgot to mention in my previous comment that most used bungees to keep the lot together, which we needed to make a basha anyway. In the early 90s 49 Bde were the Airmobile Bde if my memory serves me right.

I learned something: I was one of the f those people who referred to the lightweight poncho as ‘58 Pattern’

I do love a poncho, lightyears in advance of the Mk VII rain cape nightmare.

The nylon poncho has a row of female press stud halves on the inside.the nylon sleeping bag has a row of male halves at the foot,is this some kind of one man basha idea that didn't catch on? And is there any official documentation on this.
