One of my favorite crossovers. I do like how KZbin has French subtitles to the host segments so it's truly bilungual. See, I feel this could be done in two ways- if you want a surviving Neanderthal tribe, it could be a tragedy about a community that's slowly going extinct and our protagonists forming bonds with them, and it could be more of a typical French art film about the loss of humanity, imperialism, our own mortality, etc. Of course, if you still wanted to do horror, you could make it with either a Cabin in the Woods approach of insane inbreds, or have the protagonists be villains who needlessly antagonize the village.

I can see a Neanderthal being a pretty decent horror villain; they probably had very different psychology, might have been cannibals in some circumstances, were very difficult to kill, amazing upper body strength, sophisticated hunting strategy, survived in extremely difficult habitats and did hunt large dangerous animals. The latest is they hunted giant lions and wore their hides as capes for trophies, and collected bear claws and wolf teeth as jewelry.

I just assumed they pulled a Primal or The Hills Have Eyes Two; either kill the woman immediately after they give birth or rape them and kill them if they try to escape, even if the woman is heavily pregnant. Forced pregnancy in horrors are so bloody stupid because the main reason for keeping them alive doesn't often come to fruition, wasting our time and logic getting thrown out the window in favour of shock value.

TheNightshade43 The whole thing that really doesn't make sense is: (1) it's very hard for a woman to get pregnant in a stressful situation. One of the things a doctor will tell a couple trying is to take the pressure off and relax. It CAN be done (and has happened in the case of real life rape) but it just makes it that much harder. (2) Keeping a pregnant woman in captivity and making sure the whole process goes off without any major complications (especially in such a primitive environment) is a real uphill struggle which, more than likely, does not go well. (3) A lot of the time even willing pregnancy in times like that tended to not end well for the mother and/or the child. Of course it did happen (or we wouldn't be here now) it's just that the odds were really stacked against it. That's why you hear these stories of even back in the 1800's (a more 'civilized' time than their's) of families having a dozen kids and only one or two surviving beyond the first year or so. All and all it's a mess of an idea.

One thing that kinda ticks me of is Benzaie's claim that Neanderthal aren't supposed to act civilised. The very first finding of a Neanderthal skeleton was in a burial ground partly chiseled into solid stone. As such we know they had culture and thus civilisation. So in fact we have known this for exactly as long as we have know of their very existence.

So far I liked every single french movie I saw (and I saw several), which is more than I can say for all other countries except Denmark (I liked the 1 danish movie I saw), but it's true I never saw a french horror movie. Still they are probably on average, better than the horror movies of other countries.
