The 1930s New York setting in this episode is so cool and interesting. I think most of the actors are British except the one playing Mr Diagoras. Very young Andrew Garfield, pre Spider-Man, and Solomon is played by Hugh Quarshie who also was the Naboo guard captain in The Phantom Menace.

In the Confidential, behind the scenes documentary for each episode, only a few scenes were actually shot in New York, and none of them were with the actors, just a camera crew for establishing shots.

Not sure if you worked it out, but the four Daleks were those from Doomsday. They did an emergency temporal shift to 1930's Manhattan at the last moment while all the other Daleks there, and all of the Cybermen, got sucked into the void.

I love the conversation between the Dalek and Diagoras at the top of the Empire State building. Really memorable. I think most of the cast were British, putting on American accents. Lots of people mention Andrew Garfield, but there's Hugh Quarshie as Solomon, stalwart of the long running BBC show Holby City, and who also bizarrely turns up in The Phantom Menace; and Tallulah is Miranda Raison, best known for loads of theatre and for the long running Spooks. Eric Loren as Diagoras? He's American! I always wondered why Helen Raynor called the character 'Diagoras'; the original Diagoras was an atheist and poet in Ancient Greece. The musical number is terrific. Yes, I too am into musical theatre. Not for other reasons, just love musicals. I seem to remember the reveal of the hybrid was spoiled by having his face all over the listings magazine Radio Times. Ah those were the days, listing magazines . . . Excellent reaction as always!

Honestly on a rewatch I think season 3 one of my favorite seasons and I think I overlooked a lot these episodes and how great Martha in general was because I refuse to get over rose lol

As well as going on to play Spiderman, Andrew Garfield was one of a trio of lead actors from the excellent Channel 4 TV show "Sugar Rush" to appear in the 'Whoniverse' in quick succession! The Daleks were first seen in the second story of the original series [at that time, the show was serialized which half hour episodes] and they have been "wiped out" at least 3, maybe 4 times by the start of the new Who. I can't imagine them ever really be being gone for good....

Love this double episode. A young Andrew Garfield. Plus a great story that plays a role in future events…. The Cult of Skarro is a group of Daleks who choose to think differently. Hence the human/Dalek hybrid.

Since you like Doctor WHO, I have two recommendations, the classic Doctor WHO adventures are on Tubi. There is another great Sci-fi series called Farscape on Peacock and Tubi where an Astronaut gets lost in space and ends up on a living ship full of escape Alien prisoners. The series is created by Brian Henson, son of Jim Henson, and Rockne O’Bannon who created Seaquest and Alien Nation. They use the same effects from the Dark Crystal, The Labyrinth, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the 90s for the Aliens and makeup effects.

Fair episode, asking the right questions, the ones from S2E5 back again. Skaro is the Dalek home planet so Cult of Skaro as a special team of sorts. Pig slaves as minions. Human Dalek combo which I mean it gets mentioned human Dalek in S11/12 or so but means more now. But ah species purity questioning. Fair moments, fair Manhattan/the theatre and the sights.

Most of the cast are British except for lazlo and Mr diagrams played by Americans and Frank who while born in la holds both British and American citizenship this was also the first dalek episode ever written by a woman and the first of what unfortunately would be a recurring theme of the BBC at the time spoiling episodes when they basically gave away the ending of the episode weeks beforehand
