“Bought the farm” is an expression that means “died”… so when Doc said he almost bought the farm, it means he almost died.
@j.diamond6014Ай бұрын
i mean, duh! But the actual origin of the phrase is what's interesting. It has multiple sources, here is one from google: It comes from the 20th century military forces as slang soldiers would refer to a person who has died or been killed in action. The specific mention of a farm is referring to if a jet crashes on a farmers land, the farmer can sue for compensation. Hence the pilot essentially 'bought the farm'.

@@j.diamond6014 I heard something similar- when a service member was killed in action, the insurance the military had on him would help his family pay off the mortgage. They included the last part of the previous movie for proper continuity as Claudia Wells, the original actress for Jennifer, chose to step down to be with her ailing mother. So Elizabeth Shue, known these days from The Boys, took over. And that rejuvination scene bit from Doc removing that skin layer was actually deliberate; makeup was applied to Christopher Lloyd in the last film for the 1985 scenes to of course make him look older, but took a lot of time to do. So they just made up an excuse to not make him look older and not waste time with the makeup by making up that scene.

The writers knew that, whenever movies try to depict the future they always get stuff wrong and often end up feeling almost immediately dated. So, when they started work on Back to the Future 2, they decided to lean into that by instead intentionally depicting a version of the future that was more a satirical look at how Sci-Fi usually depicts the future; knowing full well that they weren't going to get probably anything right. Ironically, the movie almost accurately predicting that the Cubs would win the World Series, being one year off; with them winning in 2016 - something they hadn't done since 1908.

To effectively put Michael J Fox or Tom Wilson (Biff) on screen with older or younger versions of their characters (or in Michael's case, his kids too), production for Back to the Future II pioneered new filming tech, which became known as the VistaGlide camera, which allows them to program shots and lock off the camera with a high level of precision, that would ensure that each take, namely with an actor play a different part, would seamlessly match and allow them to splice and overlay them together. Prior to that, split screens were often hit and miss, where you could usually see the split on the screen.

Hello Emme!😊 There is a lot to talk about here. The TV waiter characters in The Cafe 80s are based on a popular 80s character called "Max Headroom". When Marty is playing the game in the cafe one of the kids beside the machine is a young Elijah Wood. The actor that played George (Crispen Glover) does not appear in this film. Do to a salary disagreement he did not reprise his role. They used footage from the first film and another actor to act as his double. When he is hanging upside down, that is another actor in heavy makeup. Glover sued the picture for using his likeness, and settled out of court. Marty's daughter in 2015 is played by Michael J. Fox. "Bought the farm" is slang for "Die in an accident". It was a popular saying for many years that originated from 20th century military forces. Great reactions to your 2nd Back to the Future film, Emme!!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Looking forward to your reactions for Part III!😊

49:26 - 49:27 When Back to the Future (1985) was released onto VHS, they added a tagline at the end of the film. As the DeLorean was going into the future, and the screen went white, it dissolved into the words “To Be Continued…” as a way to let the fans know there was going to be a sequel. When they were making the sequels back to back, they added the tagline “To be Concluded…” for Part 2 as a way to let fans know there is another part to the story. And because they did make the sequels back to back, they added a teaser to let everyone know you wouldn’t have to wait long. Part II was released November of 1989, Part III would be released May of 1990.

It bears mentioning that Zemeckis, et al. specifically did NOT set out to create a plausible 2015. Since that year was going to arrive well within the lifetimes of the film's audience, they deliberately went over the top to create a "future" so fun and outrageous that it couldn't possibly be mistaken for a serious attempt to predict what would actually come to pass. As for the Cafe 80s, it references very specifically 80s pop weirdnesses that didn't stand the test of.....well, time. The stuttering Michael Jackson and Ronald Reagan on the cafe's ordering screens were a callback to a brief and particularly strange phenomenon known as Max Headroom - a glitchy, ostensibly computer-generated television host.

Robert Zemeckis (the director) and Bob Gale (the writer) have stated that the ending of the first movie was NOT meant to set up a sequel. They said, if they HAD intended that, they wouldn't have put Jennifer in the car with Marty and Doc. Since they did, they then had to write her out, so she spends much of the movie unconscious. Also, at the end of the first movie, when Doc said "no, you and Jennifer both turn out fine", he sounded very earnest, but in this version, he sounds more like he's avoiding the question, because he KNOWS about the car accident that ruins Marty's life.

29:15 No easter eggs in Part I, because when they made the original Back to the Future, they had no plans of making any sequels. It wasn't until much later, after the movie was a success, the studio ordered Parts II and III. The writers have even said, had they known there would have been a sequel, they never would have put Jennifer in the DeLorean at the end of Part I, as it created a story complication they didn't want to deal with; which is why she's promptly knocked out at the start of Part II.
@blackswanstudios6632Ай бұрын
"No easter eggs in part I" because it wouldn't make sense (in ADDITION to it of course being technically impossible for the reason you explained). So even IF the movies, part I and II were made back to back, there would still have been no easter eggs in the first one, because the whole concept of BTTF is that we're seeing events AS they unfold in objective time. We're watching the timelines go from unaltered to altered in other words.

Great video, Emme! It's interesting to see how these movies are viewed today by someone like yourself, with people born after the 80s knowing in advance that it's a three-part odyssey and a beloved part of the popular culture and having the ability to sit down and watch all three back to back to back. As someone who saw all three in the theater when they came out and was all in on the mania back in the day, I'd like to talk about my experience, and the experience of the original fans - with no spoilers, I promise. It's important to note that in terms of marketing, production and release times, these movies were quite different than, say, the original Star Wars trilogy or The Lord of the Rings films. Star Wars came out once every three years, building into a pop culture juggernaut. The Lord of the Rings, already a beloved book series, was filmed as one and came out one film a year for three years and marketed as a blockbuster from the get-go. The Back to the Future trilogy, however, was a whole different thing and almost an accident. The first film came out the summer of 1985 and wasn't anticipated as a big movie. It had a modest budget ($19 million, compared to 1984's Ghostbusters' $25 million or 1983's Return of the Jedi's $32 million) and featured a couple of television stars. (Yes, Christopher Lloyd had been in films before, including 1984's Star Trek III, but he was more recognizable as Jim from Taxi.) Director Bob Zemeckis and composer Alan Silvestri had a hit the previous summer with Romancing the Stone, but that was a smallscale, personal film with big stars (Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito) and wasn't a big happening in terms of story or music. So along comes Back to the Future, which was basically a comedy, and the last thing most of us expected was to be swept away with its big feel and John Williams-like score - and yet that's exactly what happened. Zemeckis caught lightning in a bottle (pardon the pun) with the perfect script, the perfect actors, and the perfect timing. It was loved by the people who were around in the 1950s, like my parents, because suddenly they were back there. It was loved by kids of the 1980s (like myself) because it was fun to imagine ourselves back in the time of our parents' youth (which we were always hearing about) while inventing skateboarding and rock 'n roll to show the kids from the past - especially the bullies - what fun really was! It became THE summer blockbuster of 1985, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd became big-time movie stars before our eyes, and this was all just as video cassettes were becoming affordable and Cable television (deregulated in 1984) was exploding, so in the following years, we were able to watch and rewatch it many times. (Keep in mind, this was a period where our viewing choices were limited, with no DVRs, Blu-ray collections, or streaming services, and far less platforms for content creation. Thus a beloved video cassette would be watched over and over again.) By the late 1980s, we had all gone on to assume Back to the Future was a standalone film (as originally intended) and would remain a beloved icon by itself. Then it was announced there would be not just one, but two sequels, and they would be filmed and released back to back. Part II would come out in late 1989, and Part III would come out in early 1990. That meant several things that are important to understand. First, whereas Part 1 was written and filmed as one thing (with all the sets destroyed afterward), Part 2 and Part 3 were written and filmed together, sharing some of the same sets, featuring the same actors (with a couple of new actors taking over parts from people who wouldn't return after Part 1) - and, most importantly, telling one big-picture story, more or less - with exposition in Part 2 that wouldn't be paid off until Part 3. (In other words, Part 1 is like the original Star Wars film in terms of being its own thing from a production and story standpoint, with all the sets struck down after filming, whereas Parts 2 and 3 follow The Lord of the Rings model, filmed as one thing, with even one of the scenes in Back to the Future Part 3 filmed during the production of Part 2.) So anyway, back to the fans' standpoint here: when we went to see Back to the Future Part 2, it was the complete opposite of going to see Part 1. This time we were going to see a blockbuster (with a $40 million budget) with big-time movie stars, and stepping into an area of turf which was a beloved part of pop culture, with everyone knowing all the jokes from the first film (most notably the manure) by heart. Then.... JUST a short time later... we went to see Part 3, and that was a unique experience in a way because Part 3 largely plays off of Part 2, but keep in mind, we didn't know Part 2 that well! We had just seen it, but we hadn't seen it over and over like Part 1. (In fact, there were some people in the theater who had seen Part 1 but hadn't seen Part 2.) So in a way, it wasn't until the films came out on video as a threepack that we were able to watch them over and over and appreciate the grand tapestry. And THAT's my story about what it was like being an original fan - though I also have to add I was one of the first on the Universal Back to the Future ride in Florida, and it was awesome! And I loved the BTTF cartoon. But I think I'll stop there. Thanks for indulging me!

Thank you back to the future for it's sequel and the common shocked and appalled doc rushing and dumping it for Jennifer as well but obviously realizes when she asks and Doc looks at her strange she shouldn't have come.

2015 still owes my brother a real hoverboard. Also, the Cubs winning the World Series was off by a year. As a fan of alternate history, something I have learned is that the further you get from the point of divergence, the more unpredictable history becomes based on what had previously happened. In regards to this film, Biff takes the almanac to his past self in 1955 and then first uses it in 1958. Who's to say in that new timeline events play out exactly the same way. Biff's changes could have effects ranging from different economic turnouts and presidential races to different team lineups. In short, Biff's effective use of the almanac is smaller. Had Marty kept the almanac and gone through with the plan, he's 17 in 1985, meaning he'd have to wait a few more years before he could legally gamble. The timeline would still change, but Marty could get more use out of the almanac.

there's a theory that back the future takes place in a future AFTER marty went back to the 1950s and started skateboards early which let to an interest in accelerating vehicle tech rather then computer tech. So hoverboards and flying cards get developed

So, since you didn't pick up on it, this was Elijah Wood's first feature film. He was one of the kids playing the Wild Gunman arcade machine in Cafe 80's.

26:00 Basically, it's a lack of unconditional self love and self worth. Such people constantly feel that they are worthless. They see world as hierarchy: from their point of view, people are essentially worthless. Or, if you think that you are meeting some stupid conditions - such as wealth - you think you are higher and better then "worthless" people who don't meet those conditions. So, they are getting some kind of fun out of that: that usually they are worthless, but now they are "higher". This kind of fun is only possible in contrast with thinking that you are basically worthless and everybody are worthless too.

Hi Emme, another great reaction and thank you for reacting to The 'Back to the Future' trilogy, which is considered the best triology EVER, a trilogy where all 3 Parts are superb, brilliant, and a masterpiece in there own way, part 3 is a super ending to a super trilogy. Hope to see your reaction as soon as you possibly can ---- When Marty is in Biff's car & talking on the 'walky talky' Biff can't hear him as the car (a 1946 Ford) is so loud and with the radio is on, Biff even try's to adjust the radio as he thinks it's the radio making a noise, We can hear Marty & Doc so we know what's going on 🙂 ❤

It's very fitting that you waited a bit between movies, since the two came out four years apart. It wasn't easy to wait at the time. Though that may have been because I was a kid. I also want to point out that the character Needles was played by Red Hot Chili Pepper's bass player Flea.

I wouldn't be surprised if Emme is too young to have listened to much RHCP (they're definitely more popular with GenX and older Millennials). That said, a short video of Emme rocking out to Snow or Give It Away would be awesome.

he also plays the "old" guy coming to make a collection from Marty in the future for the Clock tower and then inadvertently give shim the idea for taking the Almanac to the past to use it to get rich.

The rejuvenation treatment is Christopher Lloyd basically going away from needing old-man makeup from the first movie. He and the filmmakers didn't want to continue using the prosthetics.

The man that mentions that the Cubs won the World Series and the man that got the Manure out of Biff’s car is the voice of Roger Rabbit. The tunnel that Biff drives through and crashes into the manure for the second time is the same tunnel to Toon Town in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. They had to recast Jennifer because Claudia Wells had to take care of her mother at the time. Her mother got cancer. Claudia had to leave the franchise to take care of her mother.

Christopher Lloyd wore old age makeup in the first movie when playing 1985 Doc, which meant he would have had to wear the application for the remainder of the trilogy so they just had him pretend he was wearing "a disguise" and so he tore off the mask stating he had gone through a rejuvenation clinic to look "younger".

Great reaction! I hope someone warned you and you didn't watch the preview for 3 at the end. The original was my favorite movie when it came out. I was 13 and saw it so many times in the theater. Of course I started skateboarding, bought a Walkman, and started taking guitar lessons. I still play in a few bands 40 years later so these movies probably influenced my life more than anything else from my childhood. When this one came out I still really liked it but it just wasn't the same. I thought the future was silly and the alternate 1985 was ok, but I loved seeing the scenes from 1955 from different perspectives and since then I have always loved time travel stories and thinking about the practical ramifications. My biggest issue with this movie was always them going into the future and seeing their old selves. I just don't think it could happen that way. As Doc explains in this movie you literally leave the timeline at the point you jump from and reappear later. When Einstein traveled one minute into the future in the first movie there wasn't two Einsteins there when he reappeared. If Doc had sent him one hour, one day, one month or one year into the future they would've just waited for him to reappear and there would not have been two Einstein's there. Marty can't jump into the future to see himself because he would've disappeared from the timeline in 1985 so there wouldn't have been an old him in 2015. But that's just me having fun thinking about the possibilities of time travel. One other thing I never noticed until your reaction was Doc commenting on Marty using the word "heavy' in 1955. The problem is that the Doc that Marty says that to is from 1985. He would've totally know what "heavy" meant, I'm sure Marty said it to him all the time in 1985. Anyway, thanks for reacting to these movies. Hope you enjoy #3!

Great reaction Emme like always, this one is amazing this might be my favorite trilogy of all time so I love seeing how much you love it! I can't WAIT for you to see Part III. There are some fun facts about this one. This movie was filmed back-to-back with Part III. If you notice they replaced the actress who played Jennifer Parker, Claudia Wells in the original Back to the future, but had to pull out of appearing in Part II after her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Elizabeth Shue was cast in the role instead and even re-shot the final scene of the first film, so it could be ‘replayed’ at the beginning of the second. This was Elijah Wood in his very first film role, Wood’s role, as an awed child by the arcade cabinet playing that game with pistols, Crispin Glover who portrais Mcfly Sr in the first one did not apper on this one. According to Glover, he discovered that he was offered far less to reprise his role in any given sequel than Lea Thompson for a similarly sized role, Glover’s agents demanded a higher fee and script approval, and Bob Gale responded by offering even less money than before. As a result, Glover pulled out of the sequel as was replaced by Jeffrey Weissman in heavy prosthetics. This is partly why George McFly is almost always shot in the dark, from behind, or upside-down. One of the more memorable gags about the future occurs when Marty is assailed by a holographic shark outside the cinema (or ‘Holomax’). The Jaws films, in spite of the critically panned Jaws 3-D and Jaws 4, are still going strong in the fictional 2015, marking the nineteenth entry in the franchise. Jaws 19 is directed by Max Spielberg, son of the legendary director. Max was born in June 1985, the ‘present’ era of the trilogy. Actors playing themselves is nothing new - and it wasn’t new in 1989, either. However, this was mostly achieved with clever camerawork and body doubles. Back to the Future Part II broke the mould by using a VFX trick that allowed the same actor to feature twice in the same frame: the ‘Vista Glide.’ As usual, necessity is the mother of invention. Given the number of times characters interact with their past selves, or alternate future selves, or narrowly avoid continuum-obliterating paradoxes, exactly this technique was needed. There are a genuine stunt injury in this film in the hoverboard chase. Due to a technical difficulty with the wires suspending the actors, Cheryl Wheeler-Duncan - the stunt double for Darlene Vogel’s Spike veers off-course and slams into the concrete pillar next to the glass. Ouch! She then falls 30 feet on to the concrete below. Evidently Zemeckis saw a silver lining in this on-set mishap, as that take is the one we see in the film. Keep up the good work.
