Thanks so much for sharing this color, Marie! It looks super flattering on you! I did my own calculations with the color ratio for a smaller batch, and used my own lipstick formulation and I'm in love! You're forever my favorite DIYer!

The city I live in collects compost every week. I compost paper towel, toilet paper rolls, cotton balls, etc... The addition of paper towel will usually speed up the composting process, much like dead leaves.

Lovely color! I have the red/blue iron oxide from TKB and love it! I use it in lip colors and blush. The most effective way I have found at removing oils and waxes from melting containers is to first swab it out with a silicone spatula, then wipe with paper towels, followed by wash with good detergent lol. It is a process! But is worth it rather than wetting and trying to wash out all the excess goo in the sink! Love it!

That's exactly what I do! Usually, at least, lol. That's where those beautiful spatulas come in extra-super handy. I once taught a DIY lipstick workshop and I had to do all the dishes... LORDY. I nearly had a fit. I had not discovered this method yet and I was nearly in rage blackout territory by the time I cleaned out all 80 tiny glass prep cups!

If I were to make up a larger batch of this base melted on direct heat to incorporate the magnesium stearate, would I be able to re-melt small portions of it via water bath? Or would the magnesium stearate separate / not melt.... ? (does that make sense?) I was thinking about making up a larger batch of base then being able to melt single batch volumes in a small glass bowl for incorporating pigments... any thoughts would be much appreciated!

So, I have a few questions. 1. What is the difference between the percentages/metrics used for Pigments in a lip stick v.s a lip tint? Let's say I wanted this color, how much would I need to divide the color recipe to get a tint and not a lipstick? 2. How do you know how much color you want to use to create a lip tint? Is there a standard amount? 3. I know you'll probably have this in your book, but how would one know what colors to mix together to get a specific color? lol or will I have to wait? I'm only interested in making tints.
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 8 жыл бұрын
Honestly, that's s whole lot of "it depends". How much do you apply? How do you define a tint vs lipstick? The book has loads of colour blends and info on both lipsticks and tints. In my experience, blending colours is part colour theory and part actual doing; you can know that red + blue = purple, but the right red (oxide vs carmine) and other ingredients (titanium dioxide?) will seriously impact the end colour you'll get. I probably made 50 different lipstick shades for the book, and constantly surprised myself with what I got vs. what I thought I'd get. So... yeah. It depends LOL. Just experiment! Take notes! You'll figure out something you love and have fun in the process :)

Sooo pretty! :-D I use a different method and I'm wondering if you've ever tried this way: I get everything melted, add the colours, give it a good stir, then walk away. Once it's cooled but not hardened, I mix until there are no streaks. Then I gently reheat and pour. It seems to take a lot less time than mixing while everything is melted and the colours seem to be incorporated well, but I would love to hear if you have any thoughts on possible pitfalls of the different method! 💜
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Your method sounds great if the base will allow for it! I find my lipstick bases (perhaps not this one, but the ones in my book) are so firm that there is no such thing as a cool phase that allows for stirring. If it's cool, it's solid :P

What if you dispersed the blue into the oils as they melted to get it blended easier? then add the red iron oxide and titanium dioxide after? Just wondering if that would work. Looking for magnesium sterate closer now lol
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
That would likely help! I often develop recipes in much smaller quantities (where the pigment blending is less of a problem) and then scale them up so my readers don't need a scale that's accurate to 0.01g, so if you have a super precise scale you could also try scaling this recipe down quite a bit, and that'll help :)

why not melt the magnesium stearate with safflower oil first, then drop the butters in so you don't kill the benefits of the butters?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
Magnesium stearate melts at 88°C. The smoke point of cocoa butter is 188°C, and for shea butter it's 233°C. We're not getting anywhere close to hot enough to damage those butters :)

How to calculate/set up the proportion of making lipsticks? Any rules? For example, I want to make 30g of matte lipstick. What is the proportion of oil:butter:wax?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
It's really not that simple; there are SO many variables in making cosmetics. Adhesion, slip, tack, texture, consistency, melting point, pigmentation-every single one of those things is impacted by each ingredient you use, and the amounts of it you use. I'd recommend purchasing my book, Make it Up (www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/). It's filled with carefully (obsessively!) developed makeup recipes, and the lip paint is an amazing matte lipstick!

I have been scratching my head with a lingering question since many days now. I need to know what natural color I can use for lip balms, lotions, body Butters and cleansers. I use iron oxide for soaps but then that's it. I have tried many times to use iron oxide in my lip balms with various recipes, but nothing worked with red iron oxide. I can see that it blends well only in Glycerine but even where I've used Glycerine, the formulation failed miserably. Please guide me as to what natural colors I should use for the above mentioned formulations. Thanks

Sadly not; the reason you aren't getting colour from those things is because they are very weak colourants. You need proper, potent pigments like oxides to get noticeable colour for cosmetics.

hey beautiful this is the first time I'm seeing magnesium stearate powder in DIY. so hard work to make a lipstick! the thing is the medium dose of it is 1000mg/kg ! could you please explain why did you used much more? thank you in advance
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 4 жыл бұрын
In cosmetics, maximum usage rates are expressed as percentages. "1000mg/kg" sounds like a maximum dose for the body-usually when eating something? So that would likely be 1000mg per kilo of body weight? You can learn more about it in cosmetics from CosmeticsInfo.org, but here is a relevant passage: "The CIR Expert Panel reviewed acute oral studies indicating that the Stearate salts were practically nontoxic, and had a low potential for acute dermal toxicity. Skin irritation studies demonstrated that Stearates were only minimal to slight irritants at high concentrations." You can learn more about what it does in cosmetics in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/).

I am such a hoarder with my containers!!! lol ive got a designated hutch with all kinds of big and little jars and tins and bottles. but my favorites that i have a hard time giving away are my little lipstick an balm jars.lol Also, being that ive only been able to buy a small amount of carmine, since hub thinks its far too expensive for a powder to be buying all the time i absolutely cringed when i watched you wipe all of that beautiful red away.:( i was like "wait! no! ill take it! ill give that sweet little glop a home!.." lol i am just a huge fan of carmine, yet limited on the amount i can get at a time. Don't worry, no carmine was harmed in this video-no carmine was even used, lol. This one is just oxides, which are mucho cheaper! I know I got a bunch of notifications from you, but this is the only comment from you I can find right now. Definitely not-we need a smooshing/smearing action to blend in the pigments, and we don't want to whip a bunch of air into the lipstick. Plant derived colourants don't generally work as they are quite impotent and usually water soluble; read this for more info: www.humblebeeandme.com/quick-guide-colourants/

I've read that iron oxide contains lead. is it still safe to use on our cosmetics?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
Here are the FDA guidelines on cosmetic grade iron oxides: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?c=ecfr&SID=d1e893bdb7eb4f21dc0d6979702c7372&rgn=div6&view=text&node=21:1.0.1.1.27.3&idno=21#se21.1.73_12250. The requirements for lead are "Lead (as Pb), not more than 10 parts per million"-an extremely low (and safe) level. Heavy metal content is why iron oxides for cosmetic use are synthesized rather than "wild harvested" :)

I am using the same ingredients but my lipstick is becoming very oily and I can feel small particles of iron oxide in it.

If it's much hotter where you live that would probably explain the oiliness-I'm in Canada, so this recipe was made for weather around 20°C. Is your iron oxide cosmetic grade? Was it finely ground before you added it? It is insoluble, so whatever the particle size is at the time of adding it will be the particle size in the end product.

@@HumblebeeAndMe I am from India can I reduce oil quantity as it is hoter here. My iron oxide is cosmetic safe.
