Glad I saw this video...was looking for something to run my engine once its finished, and it came down to the Hondata and the 750 series Haltech. More inputs, better overall control and hall sensor control was what I was looking for, but when doing the quick maths on it...The Hondata with everything I wanted was going to come out somewhere between 900-1400usd. And while it may of been cheaper if deals were found, the Haltech is just better all around. Agree 1000% with what is being said in this video and thanks for posting it!

you're actually better off with a Haltech 1500 or FueLTech 550.. Save a lil bit longer, add a couple more dollars and get those 2 instead. everything else is either go with OEM, or go all out standalone.. everything in the middle.. you're getting nickel and dimed left and right TBH .. You're going to need all the inputs and outputs sooner or later. Better to have it available when you don't need and not have it. Then having to repurchase the next level one. Buy it once and you won't have to buy it again.

What makes the haltech 550 a piggy back like k pro or s300? From what I see the 550 is not installed into an oem unit to allow it to be tuned which would make it a full standalone… this is for guys building a basic street car that don’t need all the extra sensor inputs.

They’re not the same fundamentally. FT is an injection timing based computer. Haltech is a volumetric efficiency ecu. FT is only really preferred by tuners who don’t understand the advantages of VE. Fueltech is a great drag racing ecu. But for a huge number of reasons, haltech is a better street car ecu. That’s not to say fueltech can’t be used in a street car, but you’re missing a lot using it.

This is the same conclusion i came to after going with a ft550 for my b13 sentra. I love the FT, dont be mistaken. But for a street car, Haltech is laid out better. Its mainly from the list of engines in the settings drop down menu. It's a good point to start from. FT is universal. No stored engine credentials. FT generates a base map off the info entered i.e: inj size, engine comp., etc. But it's nothing to depend on. You will have to alter it.​@humbleperformance

Haltech is also universal. Also VE is more or less universal as well, that’s why it doesn’t really need a base map generator. You do roughly the same thing as fueltech in the engine config and fuel setup. You can start pretty much any car with a 50% VE table across the board lol

With this 1500, I can just plug it in to my stock car right away and daily it without problems all while retaining everything about it? I'm not the first person to have the idea to use a gen 3 LS ECU on a 4 cylinder. Millions of those ECUs out there going for $60 on ebay, plenty of cheap harnesses, MAP sensors all send the same shit (some are powered by 5 volts instead of 12). Does coil on plug, just use the LS coils. Make or buy a trigger wheel for the crank sensor, mount it to crank pulley, then mount the crank sensor; everything else is easy. And there's custom firmware for boost control and wideband O2. AAAND, the software to tune them is free, Universal Patcher; $50 OBDLink SX works with that (VATS/VTD delete is first thing to do). You disable misfire and circuit open error reporting for the 4 unused cylinders. You can choose MAF or speed density only. My video from 12 days ago shows an example of a crank sensor adapter, and I show the sensor working with the ECU at the end. Sensor is from a 4.3 Ecotec. Make a video for that if you're really not a shill.

In a video about a carbed Honda, some guy just used an RPM based trigger for Vtec. I never looked into variable cam timing much, because that's one of those things that adds a lot of bullshit but gives you very little, if I had an engine with that, I just wouldn't plug it in. I'll reply again if I find something that can be repurposed for those functions. Bet I can if I abandon trans control. There are people working on custom firmware too; sure they could sort it out.

The difference between a car with vtc and a car without vtc even stock is nearly 50hp. So you can’t control vtc, therefore it can’t run a k series engine. An rpm based trigger for vtec is a TERRIBLE way to run vtec.

Sounds like a shill answer. How much you make selling those? If I want "all the horsepowers", I'll use a bigger engine without the bullshit, or go the easy route of a turbo kit. Different cam profiles peak at different RPM ranges; RPM is the only variable that matters... change my mind..

Your proposed solution can’t run 2 basic functions of a Honda engine competently. Using a single cam profile limits your power band significantly. Variable lift and variable cam timing are ENORMOUSLY advantageous. You get power in the low and high end with fuel economy. The difference between a vtec killer car and a car with vtec can be literally in the hundreds of horsepower. The same goes for vtc and locked cam timing. Nobody is stopping you from using a diy approach. But your proposed solution is objectively fundamentally flawed. The key difference here is you talk about making big horsepower like it’s a theory. I’m talking from experience.
