Wow Jake, the Hummer owner must think that you are a God send! Just had a similar story with a dealer misdiagnosis on a Ford Focus no AC problem where they quoted a compressor lol. Customer went to the dealer with my invoice and actually got her money back! 😀

Hi Jake, As a Brit of a certain age here's an easy conversion for turning celsius into fahrenheit - simply double it and add thirty. So your 32C becomes 94F. It's actually 90F, but you'll only ever be a few degees out no matter what temp you're converting👍

I worked briefly at a Ford dealership and i can tell you that they did not have anyone that specialized in diagnosis as it was a general repair shop . Most are clueless and poorly trained, it takes a special mind to solve these problems and watching people like you help techs hone their skills. Shame the customer takes the hit for a bad tech. Many years ago i had a truck come from a shop that kept blowing one fuse. They charged him close to a grand and did not fix it. I got lucky found the short in under 5 mins, it was dark and i moved some wiring and it sparked lol.

Egregious case of misdiagnosis by dealer! The ignition codes should raise a flag on a no crank case. I really enjoy following your thought process on these cases - very concise and informative for us viewers. Great job, Jake! Very responsible reaction from the dealer! Not something you hear often! He's really trying to regain customers' trust and cleanup the shop. My hat is off to him.

Man Jake your videos are making better techs with each one that you upload! The way you describe and walk us through even the navigation of service info (which is very time consuming and confusing most of the time) is unmatched! Every time I watch a video that you put up I gain very valuable knowledge that helps me diagnose some of the most complex problems on these vehicles which I never thought I’d be able to do half of before finding your channel.

I’ve been a technician for about 12 years and have spent about 8 years at various dealerships and can tell you I’ve never met a dealer tech that knows what they are talking about when it comes to to diagnostics. I remember having to teach a guy with 20 years of experience how a relay worked and he looked at me like I was Albert Einstein. My current shop foreman has almost 30 years of experience with Audi you can just tell he has no idea what I’m talking about when I talk about advance electrical diagnostics. He just shotgun’s everything. It doesn’t surprise me to see this kind of stuff from dealer technicians anymore. They just have no clue what they are doing.

Very impressed with your technique on this diag. This shows how important it is to start with the basics and work from there. It also teaches me that information is vital and doing the research to understand how the system works before attempting to diagnose the problem is key! This was a great one jake, thank you for sharing!

Great diagnosis Jake! Very important to check power and ground in a control unit that you're suspecting even though diagnostic procedure says replace control unit. I like that you called the dealer to let them know that they have to be careful and more when they are charging extra diagnostic time to check a concern. That diagnosis has to be perfect. Usually, the dealer reimburses your money, but many times people just don't want to go back. But it you have a good proof they do. Thank you for sharing, Jake! Another good one!

In regards to the C1, C2, etc in the diagram. C designates a cavity. And X designates a connector. So X1 would plug into C1 on the module. 32 years as a master diagnostic and programming specialist. Just discovered you on youtube. Awesome and no nonsense approach to your diagnosis. I have made a fortune over the 32 years Ive been doing this from dealerships. It is always the same story. I always preach check for codes. The first thing i do is pull codes. When i started in the late 80's cars where fairly simple if say a headlight wouldn't work. Mechanics could guess back then and usually be right by pure luck. Nowadays it could be any number of possibilities and they will throw parts at it or my favorite is when they condemn a module and then are surprised to learn that it was something else. I encourage dealer techs to keep doin what your doin so i can have an endless supply of work.

Another awesome diagnosis. From the rust present on the inside of the dashboard I;m willing to bet that the sunroof drains are blocked and or cracked or the windshield is leaking. We have a H3 and both sunroof drains were blocked and cracked from freezing here in the North East. I would run some water through the drains and watch under the dashboard to see if water is draining into the truck. Thak you again for your well thought out diagnosis.

Jake, grreat video, I'm glad the dealer was upfront with you about his concern with the techs because he does have to trust them since he cannot double check their work. Reimbursing the charges the dealer charges plus yours is at least good faith, but I don't know if I would go back to that dealer for anything more than an oil change. And by the way, you are like a wizard with all this high tech diagnosing stuff but yet the metric stuff leaves you baffled. The United States should have gone metric back in the 1970s like they were supposed to. 1 bar is about 14.7psi, whiich is atmospheric pressure at sea level. Have a great day and I always look forward for your videos. I wish they had youtube back in the 70s when I was still in my 20s, maybe I would be as smart as you.......Ah, maybe not.

I do that same exact repair on broken pins all of the time. There are just far too many different automotive connector terminals to try to keep up with them all much less keep them on hand. This kind of misdiagnosis is becoming more and more prevalent in the industry these days. Just not enough trained and qualified young techs coming into the field and it’s only going to get worse. It’s good for people like us as our value just continues to increase but it’s a horrible thing for the future of the industry over all.

Great video and diagnosis. I’m trying to come up with my own plan to the diagnosis when you explain things. I would have been on the right track. Obviously, Alldata or Mitchell is a must when you don’t have OEM info. A lot of libraries offer access for free and I have printed out many diagrams there myself. I’m glad you reached out to the SM and he actually is going to make it right to the customer. Hopefully he can clean house in the shop and get some decent help.

Before I even start my journey to them, I already know what to expect when I get there. Dealerships are just ridiculous these days.

Looks like it's been wet under dash, why crusties in that connector? Check out a marine product called corrosion block, great for melting crusties. If that connector was total junk would you then wire around on 15 yr. old vehicle? I usually do it your way,but if it's not easy to get to, I run new wire and put a body tape note on wire saying what it is. Just my opinion.

Where there is 1 damaged wire 9 times out of 10 there is a second damaged wire. Just because you have 1 symptom doesn’t mean something else will not appear tomorrow or the next week or month. The only wires I’ve not found are the ones the customer declines the time it takes to find them. If I got the approval they get found and once you understand wire harness issues you get fast at it.

@@danialengel7078 I’ve had oxidation(black looking) and that’s never a voltage drop issue in my experience. It’s always connection or water corrosion that gives the voltage drops. 34:00 You say you don't do overlays - and rightly so because there might be other wiring damage at the same point. But you absolutely must do a bypass test (like you did) because you can now say to the customer: "There's an open circuit between these two points... And I've PROVED that repairing that fault WILL fix your no crank no start" Customer has greater confidence in you, far less likely to get refused further time than if you said "There's an open circuit between these two points which we need to find and fix but may then reveal further issues" I get a lot of mis-diags in, not so much from dealerships though but from independent workshops that do very little diagnostic work, just routine maintenance so are not regularly involved in dealing with wiring diagrams and evaluation of data. I am totally the opposite - my work is almost all diagnostic and electrical/electronics repair, I do a small amount of mechanical work if I spot an issue and the customer wants it fixed while I have their vehicle.

He said he replaced the injectors, checked the wiring, dropped the tank drained and cleaned it. Tested the fuel pump. He had it running once drove it around parked it and it went back to the way it was. $2700 and no fix. We've tried calling dealerships other mechanics, watching KZbin, and Google. On your g/S issue.. if you just file a report, they will usually fix it within a week or two. At least I know that xtool has been really good at fixing stuff like that. They even added topology on my seven hundred dollar xtool D8 recently. So that's a cool update. I know it takes time, but if you send them a report for the flaw, they typically will fix it.

The trajectory this industry is heading is looking grim. Im a kia dealer master tech, and sadly i cant wait to get out of here. The labor times are horrible, the hoops you have to jump through are ridiculous, and the typical dealer policies of poor dispatch, no communication, and no accountability make for an increasingly low morale shop.
