Hint from a wheeled vehicle mechanic: download yourself a PDF of the technical manual (TM) of the version of your vehicle. Be aware of your serial #. There is a section in that TM called PMCS (preventative maintenance checks and services). It will walk you through before, during and after driving checks, as well as semiannual, annual, and biannual services. It has literally every piece of info you will ever need for your surplus vehicle.
@tomsteadman95203 жыл бұрын
The -10 manual is operator level. -20 and -30 manuals are your maintenance manuals. -14P is your parts manual that will have diagrams and part #'s for every single piece of the vehicle.

This video is an actual life saver! Just bought my first Humvee and am going through it getting it road ready while I wait on tags. I live in the land of high taxes and corrupt politicians that heavily salts roads during the winter. I use a product called fluid film as a yearly ritual on all my daily drivers to saturate the chassis to ward off the rust. I remembered this video when I put it up on the lift and starting checking. The right rear axle bolts at the brake rotor were not only loose, but were backing all the way out! One of them was hitting the caliper! I gave them all a checking. All others were tight. I still need to change the oil in the hubs, but am shaking down other items first. Then will change all the fluids at once. I HATE the odor from the gear oil and it lingers for a long time in the shop once you let it out of the gearbox...so I'm waiting for a day when I can air out the heated shop to drain those. Good stuff!!!!!!!!!

90% of the time the U-joints have never been lubed on these trucks and believe me, you don't want to lose one on the road. What a great video. I keep on wanting to pull the trigger and pick up one of these. All the information that you had provided should apply to any used vehicle you buy. Whenever I do buy a used vehicle no matter what it is the first thing I do is to drain out all the fluid except the transmission. If you work around car or your car into cars everybody knows about changing the fluid in the transmission. Not knowing what the previous owner had done you are looking for trouble if you drop that pan. It's happened to me it has happened to people I know and the people they people know that before 3,000 mi or less you're buying a new transmission. If you Google this there are millions of different views on this subject. Some people don't believe and there's others like myself that just know firsthand to leave the fluid alone and when needed. The theory behind the fluid is that when the clutch plates in the automatic transmission start to wear down those particles are in the fluid what happens when that fluid is changed it takes everything out of there except for what would be stuck up in the upper part of the transmission. Then when you add your fluid you are deleting everything that was helping to keep your vehicle working. Great video I'm looking forward to watching more of them.

I have heard of cases where a humvee will loose a wheel at highway speeds. I am purchasing one next week as long as it all checks out and was wondering if anyone knows what to check for regarding this. I know there was a fix for it that I would imagine most military surplus ones would have had done.
@DakotaWoodHD5 жыл бұрын
Michael Saunders I would look online on some website called Steel soldiers for a detailed list of what you need to do when you first buy a Humvee. The main thing to check is your spindle nuts. You need to make sure they are torqued properly and the locking tabs are on properly. If that is all good then you won’t have any problems.

@derherr653 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, the universal torque method when a torque wrench isn't available, Gutenteit. This generally works on chassis bolts and single bolt suspension components, but you will come out ahead in the long run with a torque wrench on things that reciprocate, have stress from opposing directions, or heat cycle. Brake discs have the latter two.

How often would you want to do this maintenance on the humvee
@scout2nut6 жыл бұрын
oil change is after several thousand miles, but I would say check at least once a year unless you make a daily driver then pobably 4 to 6 months and regular inspections for leaks. the axle bolts were a nonstop problem when I was in the Army, I checked the ones in my section after every Field Ex. and we didn't drive more than 50 miles. if I had one as a Civilian , I would replace all the hardware with high quality bolts and with Lock-tite applied to the threads or even go to cross drilled bolts and install lockwire, they worked loose all the time.

A Compression Ignition Engine (Diesel) can consume any Diesel,Oil,or Fluid but the Fuel Pump is the one that takes a beating for a Rebuild.The only Engine in the Military that had no issue with using different Fuels compared to other Diesels was the LDT-427,LDT-465,LT-465,& LDS-465 Multi-Fuels that the M51A2-M62A2 & M35A2-M185A3 Trucks had,as well as the D333C that the Caterpillar Goers had.To make any other Diesel Engine successfully run on anything,you will need a Bosch VE or Inline Fuel Pump to make it easier.The VE44 is what the 12 Valve Cummins has.
