The Humvee brakes work so well because of the reduction gear in the portals. Since the brakes are mounted inboard, the gear reduction multiples the torque between the wheel and the brake rotor.

When I was in the military our early model non-uparmored HMMWV's had different payload ratings 2500lb and 5100lb. I believe this one would do much better unloaded like your friend is running it with some lighter coil springs in the back. To get the Torsen Diffs to lock up we pressed the brake and throttle at the same time. With all our butts, gear and armor in it the rig will articulate more than the one I saw in the Video. Not trying to shamelessly plug any product but those 6.2 and 6.5 motors really like Engine Restore, it helped me get mine started in the cold and they like a little transmission fluid or 2 cycle oil in the fuel as well especially if you're running jet fuel.

Some softer coils on the back of that H1 would probably help it out a good bit. They were rated at either 1 ton or 1-1/4 ton depending on which kind of humvee it is, and I think it's safe to assume it will no longer need the payload capacity that those springs were originally put in for.

This has to be one of your best videos! What a fun bunch of friends; kids playing in the snow and the rocks! Great to see the different rigs and how they drove. I miss my ZJ... It seemed to me that every time there was a traction loss on the rocks, the vehicle, no matter which one, had hard tires; letting air out might have helped, especially on the HumV. The military had tires and wheels hooked up to an on-board deflate-inflate system that could change the air on the roll. Those sure didn't look the like military wheels! I've always thought the Military could have used a few thousand Jeep Wrangler variants instead of as many expensive HumV's. How did your vinyl wrap hold up in the brush? StepChild should sounds and looks terrific! Thanks again for a great evening's entertainment! Love the banter between you two!

The Jeep is awesome!! And I already know that some people won't understand why you were talking about the Humvee having much better brakes, They will think your Jeeps antilock brakes are much better, which on the highway they are, but when you're offroad rock crawling they're not. The Humvee's brakes are better on the rocks because they lock the entire driveline and not each hub separately like regular vehicles braking systems, which can allow one or more hubs to have play in them and can cause certain tires to slip or just not hold as well as all the others.

I tested these for the military in 86 with the 9th ID. If he knew all the tricks to the HMMWV it would have gone even better. I must say, he did great for a new HMMWV driver. BTW, ya'll were so worried about the tipping point. Without the flex, the idea is that the low center of gravity and non-shifting center of balance or Fulcrum point, keep stability. When the wheel articulate, the weight is constantly shifting. Also, you are running a 30-year-old, perfect design against the best today has to offer. Geared hubs alone win the day. Or the brakes being located on the driveshaft. Oh, and initiate the brakes while gas is applied and you set the front and rear lockers. That one Sketch rock climb would have been a walk in the park. We took them over much worse terrain...and what, you think Afghanistan has paved roads in the mountains? Oh, and they were initially tested to stand 14 years of the worst war conditions. I only knew of 2 times they rolled. Both the same driver, (Lovejoy, you idiot.) and both times he rolled them by driving the passenger side over a cliff on gravel roads. Not even 4X'ing.

@@williamj.barnhartjr.3108 I would have said the same thing until these new JLs came out. Idk what it is about them that makes them seem so much more capable than the last gen JKs stock. I bought a 2 door sport and threw on some stock rubi take off wheels and it seems like it crawls up over ledges easier than previous jeeps I've wheeled with 37s and regeared everything.
@c4onmylip5 жыл бұрын
@@williamj.barnhartjr.3108 granted, I've only wheeled with 2 H1s in my life, so maybe you can chalk it up to the driver over the capability of the vehicle itself.

I thought yall had the 3.5 Metalcloak lift kit, how did you get to 4.5 inches of lift ?

During the motor swap videos we switched to JK 4.5” springs to help balance out the added weight

Great video! poor humvee trailer definitely flexes more than the humvee but they are still great wheelers for sure👍
@samvigil98355 жыл бұрын
I'd probably go Jeep over humvee for the same reason why I bought my 4Runner - have fun on the trail for hours aired down and having fun, then just jump back on the highway and go wherever you want. But both are B.A. Huge thumbs up!

Nice! H1 owner knows what's up... Articulation is for sissy drivers who can't handle the teetering sensation of big wheel stands! In reality, even with a wheel way in the air, the H1 is still less likely to roll than a lifted Jeep that gives the impression of stability because it's wheels are still touching the ground.
@spydergs075 жыл бұрын
If all tires are on the ground it literally means there is more stability lol Articulation is for more complex and hairy situations. Half of the trails we offroad on an H1 wouldn't fit width wise and would roll by the amount of flex we have to use to get over obstacles. Not only are a lot of the trails off camber but you are flexing out quite a bit over boulders and washouts that an H1 wouldn't make it over without rolling.
@V8SRSLO15 жыл бұрын
@@spydergs07 you are obviously very inexperienced with humvee's, the articulated jeep will always roll before the no top striped down hmmwv, I've be running a m998 since 2016 where bouncers go, this video is hilarious so afraid of tipping the humvee

Humvees literally are almost impossible to tip I have never seen one on its lid unlike almost every jeep I've ever seen

I would have to agree the H1 is the most stable. Articulation is only good for traction not stability

Nice scenery all the way through, loved hearing the Hemi roar. The m998 though impressive kind of self-centers and can not take the lines the Stepchild does. I doubt that my JLUR could do what the Stepchild does in its current configuration. I have found myself going back to your older videos for reference, and recently talked with Justin @ Factor 55, and waiting on delivery of my new recovery gear. As always love the videos and waiting for the next one.

Drove the H1 in 80’s. Lots of countries, lots of terrains, nothing comfy about it lol.

You drove a HMMWV. Not a H1. HUGE difference in comfort. For example, my H1 has a backup camera, leather heated captains chairs with a butt-massager and an all-leather interior.

I've drove both vehicles... I can say with the Humvee you're not afraid of sending it because it's Gov't issue =). Both are very Capable and both have their Pro's and Con's.

Military tip for starting the humvee. Have someone hold a piece of cardboard over the tailpipe to create back pressure as another person starts it.

Being an old Army retiree, I have a soft spot in my heart for the H1. I've driven them over just about ever terrain... from the deserts of Kuwait and Iraq to dragging State street in Salt Lake City (talk about some wide eyes and long stares!). But at the end of the day, I'm getting old and I love a comfortable ride. The H1 is a bit lacking in the creature comforts like A/C, a smooth ride, radio, nice seats... and the list goes on. No offense H1, I still love you and the time we had together but, I choose the Jeep!
