I first saw this film over sixty years ago and a number of times since. My belief that Laughton's characterisation of Quasimodo is one of the greatest screen performances ever, hasn't changed. The colour is great by the way, making Maureen O'Hara even more beautiful.

For those who are sad that Disney canceled the live action Hunchback of Notre Dame, be happy that there is a very good film made in 1939 😊
@ladyeyeballz835 ай бұрын
Of course Disney canceled the hunchback of Notre Dame there's no characters in there that are black or Spanish or that they could get in the news for it seems like all Disney cares about lately is placating minorities and cutting out the the majority because Quasimodo was white and Esmeralda was a gypsy they probably felt that they couldn't make a political statement with it so canceling it was their best option I'm furious about this because I'm disabled myself and was mocked the same way Quasimodo was this is one of my favorite stories I wish this was the full film and I hope he decides to do the whole film and also I hope Disney decides to get the pole out of their asses and get back to creating content suited for everyone

They canceled it? When? That wouldve been Disney's Game Of Thrones right there. I guess they don't have the guts right now, to make a live action Hunchback that wouldve had to get the R-Rating. Marvel going Rated-R is one thing, Disney doing that is another & would require bravery stronger than the Infinity Stones.
@OvelhaRosa4184 ай бұрын
@@Walt_Xander94 they canceled it last year or this year, the CEO said he didn't like the movie because it was too macabre, and there were some rumors that they were going to remove Esmeralda and Frollo's song because it was "prejudiced", I think that's nonsense

Impossible. Orson Wells had an iron-clad contract that made colorization of Kane a breach of contract which is still in effect today under the agreement. But who would want to add color to a masterpiece of black and white like that anyway? I guess I am showing my age, but I see black and white film as an art form unto itself. Adding color does not make movies better, but it does often make them worse. They're adding something that the designers of the films never intended.
@rogerrendzak80552 жыл бұрын
@@RS3DArchive Black and white may be seen, as an art, but it was also, all they had. It was their necessity, under a budget. Personally, I've also been a traditionalist when, it came to classic B&W, films🎞️. But from The Three Stooges to this, the colorization, is beautiful👍!!! It makes it more lifelike, and believable (especially, for the younger, B&W challenged audience🙄).
@TheGingerburger2 жыл бұрын
@@rogerrendzak8055 I'd argue that over 90% of B&W movies would have been in colour if they had the budget while a small portion were deliberately shot in B&W for artistic purposes and colourization is alright to do if done with care,the Ray Harryhausen movies that were colourized by Legend films look good but stuff done by companies in the 1970s/1980s look like absolute dogshite 💩💩💩

@@rogerrendzak8055 I hate colourisation, despise it, have contempt for it. Even when they get it right, such as this and several others - where it is pleasing to the eye, it's still vandalism and a pandering to the least well raised children by the poorest parenting. A case could be put to sounderise silents, and make the Academy ratio of 4 by 3 into widescreen by lopping off the tops and bottoms of the frame (such as the celebrated series "The World at War" and "Kung Fu". Good parenting would mean a love, appreciation and deep gratitude for the original by exposure to it early in life.

The 1930s version of hunchback of Notre Dame is nearly identical to the Disney’s version from 1996 with a few differences: the guards and townspeople did not throw tomatoes at Quasimodo after he became king in the former whereas in the latter, they did. Quasimodo pushes the bells to ring in the 1930s version instead of pulling the ropes like he does in the latter. Quasimodo did yell “Sanctuary” but it was before he held up Esmeralda in the 1930s version whereas in the Disney’s version, He yelled it as he held up Esmeralda. Frollo did not attempt to murder Esmeralda by burning her with fire while she was tied up like he did in the Disney’s version. Instead, the guard attempted to murder her by lashing her in the back but in both versions, Quasimodo saved her from death.

If you are doing color a little history will add to the fun. Since this story is set in Medieval Paris it is still possible to portray the sculptures of Notre Dame as brightly painted, which they still were at the time. I always wished we could see what those ancient colors actually looked like. The concept of raw, unpainted stone did not arrive until the Renaissance. Before then the statues and buildings were the only Technicolor.
